Re: Time for a career change

ok, wsus update is running again and installing stuff after doing the reboot with the win update windows..

psychonaut

Re: Time for a career change

ive just noticed something. if you cancel the wsus offline install (by closing the cmd window) when it hangs on kb3138612 , windows immediately pops up a "need to restart and install update" window.

im going to do just that and let you know what happens

psychonaut

Re: Time for a career change

hmm...maybe thats why its hanging. its done it many times on kb3138612 in fact i have one im doing now with the problem.

ive just googled it and there are a number of people with the same issue.....manually install is the answer apparently. i'll try it...

as for MS doing it deliberately....yeah, i reckon you might be onto something there.

Re: Time for a career change

re: win 7 install from dvd.

might be easier to make an image (including your faviourite programs) then sysprep it. then you can install it on any hardware and it will be up to date (well, the date of the image anyway). its pretty easy to do. there are any number of guides out there. then you can get your drivers from wherever and off you go. my win 7 image takes 7 mins to restore via usb 3 cradle.

for win updates on 7 taking days, ive found something recently that has made a massive difference.

check task manager - run it as an admin / select "show processes for all users"

if svchost has massive memory usage, and when you click "goto services” on svchost it shows wuausrv as being one of the culprits, do the following.

goto services, and stop wuausrv (windows update service)

install these two updates

KB3050265

KB3102810

this will stop the high memory usage of wuausrv from killing the machine (ive seen it eat 4gb ram and upwards recently)

then restart wuauasrv then reboot

then you should get the updates a lot quicker.

you can also then use wsus offline (google it) which is also very fast, although ive had a few issues with it hanging.

£11bn later: Smart meters project delayed again for Crapita tests

psychonaut

Re: If you have a PV Array then the last thing you want is a smart meter

"Yes, quite possibly "

no,it definitely goes backwards.

"You will still have a new electronic meter installed to satisfy the FiT scheme as the serial number would have had to be registered to make the payments against."

nope, i get FIT and they havent installed a new meter. it may be different now though, this was 5 years ago

"Count yourself lucky as you should be getting the money and reducing the registered import consumption, you will be making a double win "

yes, i know, its great

"with the old meter until your DNO decides to change it."

i dont believe they can force me to change it, not yet anyway.

psychonaut

Re: If you have a PV Array then the last thing you want is a smart meter

My old meter goes backwards when the panels produce more than we use.

bastardised shit

"I recently [installed] the summer Anniversary Update for Windows 10 on both my laptop and my desktop which went without any errors."

should read:

"i recently upgraded a previously upgraded operating system. i have shit sat on top of bastardised shit. it installed without any errors, well, any errors like stopping me from opening a browser and checking my email. the deeper, underlying total fuck up nightmare that my installation has now become is invisible to me except when i try and do something other than browse the internet"

this may be only for some value of the total number of "upgraded", but i'll bet its happening on fresh installs too.

Re: @Tom 64 - Isn't the first time

I see the macs that have problems...not many but some. El capitan was fun. ..I run a repair shop. ..most of them dont have problems but some of them do...nowhere near as many as windows of course but then they have a much smaller hardware Base to deal with and maybe apple take more care. Still stand by my comment...and I was referring to ms stuff obviously

psychonaut

Re: @Tom 64 - Isn't the first time

if you are going to upgrade an OS, do it properly, wipe and fresh install, you are just piling up potential problems for the future otherwise.

Milk IN the teapot: Innovation or abomination?

psychonaut

Re: dear god what are we teaching the kids?

dont panic....i have way more than 1 pint glass....

psychonaut

dear god what are we teaching the kids?

the only proper way to make tea is in a pint glass.

2 tea bags.

two sugars.

leave to steep until you remember that you started making a cup of tea. could be 5 minutes or sometimes 4 hours. shit ! i was making tea!

take out tea bags. scrape off tannins and other crap. put in microwave to heat to desired temperature.

THEN, and only then, do you add the milk.

the advantage of the pint glass is that

a) you can see exactly how much milk to put in as you can see the lovely colour change allt he way through the liquid column

b) it freaks people out because they assume the glass will explode when you put boling hot water in it.

c) it means you dont have to make tea as often as in a cup

Free Windows 10 upgrade: Time is running out – should you do it?

psychonaut

havent read the above, but

its pretty simple for me.

have 7? then dont do it, if you really must have it, image your machine, back up your stuff, wipe the disk, do a fresh install. reimage machine with 7 when you are pissed off.

have 8? then back up your stuff, wipe the disk, install windows 7. if you must have 10,image your machine, back up your stuff, wipe the disk, do a fresh install.

the only good thing about 10 is it slighly less shit than 8

the idea of doing an inplace upgrade is fucking stupid, it always been stupid, it always will be stupid. even if it looks like it works, it can cause problems down the line. bite the bullet, and do it properly.

ive seen the 10 upgrades do all sorts of crazy shit. remove security, remove other programs, ruin file shares and permissions, ruin network adaptors.

stay with 7 until the middle of 2020, maybe then 10 or whatever it has morphed into wont be quite as shit.

"Yes, it does.

psychonaut

Re: That explains it

yeah, it wasnt just dns. i had the same idea to use open dns instead of bt's. things seemed to load quicker, but still couldnt get on to most of the web. also didnt change the fact that we still couldnt ping the hosted mail server. then used 4g through a phone (vodafone) - that worked for about 5 minutes to the email server and then it went off too.

Fresh hell for TalkTalk customers: TeamView trap unleashed

psychonaut

Re: Easy to fix...

easy fix - dont give people that you dont know information like your teamviewer id and password, particularly if they have just phoned you up out the blue and have an indian accent

psychonaut

Re: Translation

additonal peices of information like the teamviewer id and password?

yes. exactly, so its just people being gullible.

someone random phones you up and you give them all your bank account details, passwords, date of birth and mothers maiden name. same thing.

this hasnt got anything to do with teamviewer. you may as well blame the telephone system for enabling the "hackers" to be able to phone them up or the internet for letting them be able to access their machines.

the claim in the article that the "hackers" remote controlled their pc without them telling them anything is bullshit

psychonaut

Re: Translation

i still dont get why then the miscreants bothered to phone the customers, seeing as they could simply remote control their pc's anytime they liked

psychonaut

Re: Teamviewer

talk talk definately DO NOT install tv on EVERY customers machine by default. this is bullshit.

they might use it for remote support if customer has a problem, so some of them might have it installed, im pretty sure they would use one time remote support though, rather than the hosted module or the full version.

this article makes no sense at all.

psychonaut

Re: Fighting back

<install> -win10 /y

psychonaut

Re: Translation

absolutely spot on

psychonaut

i call bullshit

this doesnt make any sense.

1) if the miscreants ALREADY had your teamviewer id and passcode why would they bother to phone you up?

2) if TV has been breached (which i dont believe, more like crap passwords, reuse of passwords, 4 digit passcode enabled on TV instead of 10 digit) and they had access to your machine, why would they bother to phone you up?

if, on the other hand, they phoned you up and you are a gullible twat and gave them your temaviewer id and passcode, it all makes sense.

the project spec consisted of

Wi-Fi hack disables Mitsubishi Outlander's theft alarm – white hats

yeah, but you can do that with a timer and a thermostat. i could do that 20 years ago, i can do it now. heck, the controller in my old house is a 30 year old honeywell. it works just the same. it still works...no firmware upgrades or hacking attempts. it doesn't need to be interwebbed.
