Re: China

China has rather a lot more schools than the USA, and a much bigger population. Yet the USA still manages more deaths via gunshots.

It IS guns that kill people. Easy access to guns means a lot more people will die than would otherwise be the case - the USA being a very clear example of this: Circa 11,000 deaths a year through guns in the USA versus circa 300 in the UK.....All of those other offensive weapons are also illegal or at least restricted in most civilised countries...Yes the determined criminals will still be able to get weapons, but your average teenager or lunatic with a grudge won't...

Nokia WP Sales are climbing

There are plenty of articles with more details, now that the most recent last 3 months Kantar figures were published. And don't forget that WP8 has only been available for about 1 of those 3 months. WP is currently at about 3-12% market share over the last 3 months depending on the location.

Re: @AC

Wrong - Windows Phone DOES already specifically ask for and state permissions prior to install (and / or on first execution) just like Android does for sensitive activities:

http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/images/flow/misc/apppermission01.jpg

I agree - open = a lot more malware given the same market share (i.e. motivation for hackers to bother attacking it). This is why Linux servers on the internet are much more likely (even taking into account market share) to be compromised than ones running Windows....

RICHTO
Mushroom

Re: @AC

Wrong on both - Windows has secure repositories (Windows Store and Windows Update for instance)

Windows Phone also can state and request permission for specific functions - e.g. track your location.

Well I'm so confident in Nokia's fuutre after getting a Lumia 920 that stuck a 5 figure sum into Nokia shares a few weeks ago at ~$3 share. If you think you are right then do go do the same for RIM......

RICHTO
Mushroom

Re: I smell bias

You need to learn to read. It says "Nokia is being credited with having sold seven million Lumias, with four million in the last quarter" and "if Nokia doubles its sales a year from now"

So current rate was 4 million a quarter - is ALREADY a rate of 16 million a year. If they doubled that then the current yearly rate would be 32 million. Not hard is it...

Or if you want to look at the historic yearly rate then If we assume linear sales growth we would have sales of 5 million, 6 million, 7million, 8 million per quarter to get to double sales then thats still a lot higher than 14 million....(26 million).

Or even if you are talking about double the cumuative sales at the time then the author says "four million in the last quarter and two million in two quarters before that." errm - so that would be 8 million doubled then to give 16 million then, not 14 million...

So not only were you wrong in stating that i claimed sales of 30 million, but you can't do basic maths either - like the author.

RICHTO
Mushroom

Re: I smell bias

That doesnt take into account the launch of WP8.....market share is NOW 4 times what it was at the same time last year....

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mobile/display/20121128205406_Microsoft_Sales_of_Windows_Phone_Based_Handsets_Quadruple_with_Windows_Phone_8.html

And before you start quoting Octobers numbers, you should read: http://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2012/12/03/its-not-octobers-market-share-that-counts-for-windows-phone-its-novembers/

And you might want to read what i actually said which was "The writer of the article cant count. Nokia already sold 4 Million Lumias last quarter. That's 16 million a year. So If they double sales over the next year, that means 8 million a quarter or 32 million a year." - which was referring to the authors inability to do basic maths - not a sales prediction.....

However allegedly Nokia ALREADY sold 7 million WP handsets this quarter, so it looks like they are now selling at circa 30 million a year...

To be fair though doing that didnt crack the password or the security. You had physical access to the file system, and you just overwrote the password file. Any stored passwords, etc that the user had as 'secrets' would not have been recoverable...

If you want to prevent such techniques when someone has physical access to the system then you just turn on Bit Locker....

Re: @RICHTO

#1 - the question answered was "Microsoft Windows Server 2012: Why Bother?" - Not sure why you are going on about upgrading, this is the case for new installations too.

The same comment about upgrade costs adding to TCO would be true of any other OS also. And at least you can upgrade Windows verisons. Many Linux distributions only support a clean install.

#2 - That is assuming that you already have clients to upgrade. What abut green field sites? And anyway - much of the new functionality does not need new clients.

#3 - The functioonality is known - this is an RTM product.

#4 - Please explain how "the performance aspect can easily start to work against you" ? - Please define where a 2008 or a 2003 server would be "much better suited" ?

"you mean ACLs like Unix has had since the 1980s"

No - I mean proper ACLs throughout the OS - not the limited Posix 1e rubbish of user, group and world bit masks of UNIX.

Linux has tried to fix it via NFSv4 ACLs, but it's still nothing like the capbility Windows has. And is still experimental.

So for instance on Linux, you cant evaluate access via claims based authentication or support expression based ACLs.

Re: Some Obvious Reasons.....

Security - Windows Server is a long way ahead of say a Linux distribution for security. I refer to number of vulnerabilities, criticality of vulnerabilities, average days at risk, and probablilty of an internet facing server being compromised - all of which Windows Server has been ahead of Linux in every year since 2003. (2002 was the year Bill Gates made secuirty Microsoft's #1 priority). Plus Windows was designed from the bottom up to be secure with full ACLs built in at every level to the OS and kernal - not a set of bolt on after thoughts like Linux - where bodges like SEL are required.

TCO - funny you should mention it - but web services was the exception i referred to. However there are a number of changes in 2012 to address that - we will have to wait for a stuidy to see if that is still the case....

Functionality - here are 2 - Secure boot and disk deduplication.

Performance -- none of your comments are related to performance - Windows Server comes in a NAS appliance version.

RICHTO
Mushroom

Some Obvious Reasons.....

#1 Security - lower vulnerability counts, with fewer days at risk and fewer critical vulnerabilties that are on average fixed faster than any competing OS. Full support for secure boot.

#2 TCO - lower cost of support / ownership in an enterprise compared to competing OSs for the vast majority of uses.

#3 Functionality - The market leader in many respects.

#4 Performance - Significantly outperforms other platforms in common uses - e.,g. worlds fastest fileserver.
