Creators Update gives Windows 10 a bit of an Edge, but some old annoyances remain

Re: Auto Wastebasket purging based on date?

"Wastebasket"

Have you been loitering on UK installs of MacOS up to 8.6? Everyone else (and 9.0.4 and beyond) got 'Trash', and Win95 gave us Recycle Bin. Oh and OS/2 had 'Shredder'.

As for auto-purging... System 6 and below did that every time an application was opened or was restarted. I think things stayed if Multifinder was running, can't easily check.

I think 'Wastebacket' was the bst out of all of them though, but then System 6 was the first GUI that I used.

Re: Try the next Debian

Well Mint is just Ubuntu with the cack taken out, and Ubuntu is a more user friendly derivative of Debian. And LMDE is Mint on Debian, with no Ubuntu at all.

Microsoft loves Linux so much, its OneDrive web app runs like a dog on Windows OS rivals

davidp231

Re: OneDrive isn't the only thing MS does tricks with for linux

Secureboot-aware ones *should* play well with UEFI with the aforementioned option turned on (eg Ubuntu, OpenSUSE). Personally I don't bother with it so I can use an alternate EFI bootloader*, which needs faffing around to get signed so it plays nice with secure boot. Also, Windows EFI mode I believe requires a GPT partitioning scheme over the traditional MBR method or it refuses to play ball.

*rEFInd is the one in question - gives you a loader more akin to what Macs have and it autodetects removable media as well. I use it to boot Linux direct without having grub as an intermediary. I've got it set to boot Win10 (edu edition), LMDE2, and the recent Fedora and OpenSUSE releases.

Plans to force ISPs to filter content branded 'disproportionate'

davidp231

ISP side filters mean bugger all if they get turned off between 2100 and 0600, as Sky appear to do. They class the files section of The Wayback Machine as file sharing/hacking/anonymisers and therefore block it. Similar applies to GSM Arena's forums. Until 9pm, then bam - the DNS resolves properly.

Re: Machine Operating System

The Model B startup was as follows:

BBC Computer 32K

Acorn DFS (or 1770 DFS with appropriate controller and ROM)

BASIC

The B+64 and B+128 changed it to Acorn OS 64K (128K), with Acorn 1770 DFS

The Master series was Acorn Mos (for version 3.20) and MOS for 3.50) and DFS as above - and had a CMOS battery, in the shape of 3x AA batteries.

The Master Compact was:

Acorn Mos

Acorn ADFS

BASIC

Re: Phone contacts

It already does the harvesting part.. how else do you have contacts in your Whatsapp contact list with an "invite" button, with no way to remove them except physically deleting the contact from the main address book. The workaround however, is to set the contact type to something that isn't 'mobile' to hide them - but the underlying issue is still there.
