IBM's next turnaround tool is ... a new open-source font?

And both use blue as the corporate colour.

Oh dear...

Comic Sans used in a serious document? Even if it's just on the graphics, I would find it very hard to take them seriously. I know they have to make them accessible and easy enough to read... but THAT font is just a piss-take.

Keyboards

Turns out it also borks the touch keyboard. If you have it set to something that's actually usable (ie, the full size one with useful keys on), kiss goodbye to it after you've logged in. You get lumbered with the useless version designed more for phones (and this is with my tablet set to Desktop mode).

Happily, there is a fix. Rename the 'ink' folder in Commin Files, and copy over the same folder from your previous install. Restart, and you have a useful keyboard again. Apparently, and according to an MVP post, the full keyboard has "issues" with the new update. Yet it works fine to log you on, and works fine after you've put it back.

Re: eBay?

That must also explain why Youtube is now only really functional if I set my browser to IE6. Loads the Youtube logo, hangs for 5 minutes, takes about the same for the browser to acknowledge I've told it to close the offending tab. Set to IE6, it works as it should. Sure it has the old layout but it works. Outlook.com isn't much different - their new "beta site", more so.

Most likely because Waterfox is a 64bit application.

Re: Will 52 ESR continue working?

"Anyway if an executable is WIN32 it should run on any 64 bit or 32 bit version of Windows."

Well, yes, but if it accesses kernel hooks not present in older versions then it won't work. Some things would also just refuse to install (because of a specific key in the setup MSI file), which can be worked around using the Orca tool - but that's no guarantee said application would run afterwards.

Brit folk STILL not getting advertised broadband speeds – survey

davidp231

Problem with regularly testing speed, is that your laptop may at the time only have say, a wireless 4Mbit connection (due to congestion, other devices or whatever), and that speed would be reflected in something like speedof.me - while a direct wired connection would give something much more accurate.

How can you kill that which will not die? Windows XP is back (sorta... OK, not really)

davidp231

How gaming is to work...

By building an appropriate rig of course, using the necessary kit to run the games you intend to play. For example:

Top end Pentium II (or III) or AMD equivalent

64MB RAM (since Win9x doesn't play very well with more than that)

Decent AGP Graphics card (easy enough to source drivers, and you may even have an old driver CD (remember those?) with appropriate drivers on

PCI Soundcard

80GB IDE HDD (should be more than enough, and FAT32 will be happy with it without faffing about.

davidp231

Win2k - for a decent version of Windows that doesn't need activiation

Win98 - for going really retro for games and maybe some applications.

davidp231

Depends what they count an XP installation as - are we talking native XP (be it bare metal or within something like Virtualbox) or the XP mode offered to Win 7 Pro and up, since that comes with a full copy of XP.
