What happened to MS Works? It became Office 2010 Starter Edition, which later got binned upon the birth of Office 2013+Windows 8. Nowadays you get a 6/12 month trial of Office 365 on new OEM machines.

That must also explain why Youtube is now only really functional if I set my browser to IE6. Loads the Youtube logo, hangs for 5 minutes, takes about the same for the browser to acknowledge I've told it to close the offending tab. Set to IE6, it works as it should. Sure it has the old layout but it works. Outlook.com isn't much different - their new "beta site", more so.

Well, yes, but if it accesses kernel hooks not present in older versions then it won't work. Some things would also just refuse to install (because of a specific key in the setup MSI file), which can be worked around using the Orca tool - but that's no guarantee said application would run afterwards.

Indeed - System 7 is bascially System 6 with Multifinder permanently on, and a new Control Panel and Fonts implementation, and VM support (if your ROM was 32bit clean of course) - along with some other refinements.

The Wastebasket lived on until OS 9 came out, where it became Trash across the board.

How gaming is to work...

By building an appropriate rig of course, using the necessary kit to run the games you intend to play. For example:

Top end Pentium II (or III) or AMD equivalent

64MB RAM (since Win9x doesn't play very well with more than that)

Decent AGP Graphics card (easy enough to source drivers, and you may even have an old driver CD (remember those?) with appropriate drivers on

PCI Soundcard

80GB IDE HDD (should be more than enough, and FAT32 will be happy with it without faffing about.
