As you have failed to align your attempt at an objection with this long-established convention, your attempt is over-ruled as invalid in front of the court, and you are hereby warned to realign or be in contempt of court.

Facebook ad platform discriminates all on its own, say boffins

Holmes

Ehem...

Both of you need to take a second look at what you've just typed, and compare it starkly with what has been stated in the article.

The very specific issue of 'unwanted' bias was highlighted with respect to the jobs, housing and credit ad placement scenarios, not tampons and lipstick.

@Mark 85 - "..So now it has to be gender neutral and ethnic neutral advertisng only.." NO - but where there is NO NEED to target people along these lines, the platform should not be seen to be doing so anyway. Why aren't both genders and ethnicities receiving ads for both jobs? White people can't janitor? Black people can't lumber..?

@Martin Summers - so you're saying white people in USA shouldn't be shown janitorial jobs because black people were "...never offended and didn't realise they should have been in the first place..." ..? They complain about this ALL the time; literally ALL the time. They DO feel offended and they DO realise there's a bias. It's usually impossible to prove and subsequently gain recompense from a biased ad platform with the clout of FaceBook, but that doesn't mean their 'systematic bias' suspicions are incorrectly placed or non existent..

Read carefully folks - perspective looks like a caliedescope, not a telescope....

Oh dear...

For all the positives of Pokemon Go (outdoor fun, meeting new people, common interest/common cause draw, game title nostalgia etc), I feel a game developed by people with a sense-of-duty/mission-to-achieve the level of standards that Nintendo had set with its software would have stood PoGo in better stead..

The application is HUGE, highly power inefficient, very buggy and the objectives change like the weather - it doesn't 'feel' Nintendo despite being heavily associated with Nintendo..

I don't know what HP fans expect from their game but I hope they get more from it than PoGo fans got..

Industry-level joint development of Apple's 'Secure Enclave' system to get to a stage where it would 2-factor requests for information/authorisation and just releas a Yay or Nay without ever releasing or sharing the actual data...? Is it not time for this to be embraced on a much wider scale?

Re: Wish list

### iWatch that's half as thick and heavy, uses LCD and reflected light or backlight at night, 4 days battery life?

--> Progress, but not DISRUPTIVE..

### earpods that use aptx quality level Bluetooth and barely weight more than current ones?

--> Progress, but not DISRUPTIVE..

### A wide open Apple TV that people actually want to buy, one that offers ALL major streaming catch-up services (after all, IOS does...)?

--> Supporting such products 'The Apple Way' would prove expensive, and factoring the Apple premium on the TV itself, means it's likely unattractive to Apple. They don't have mobile geniuses, and they'd need to fundamentally re-work their logistics.. CANNOT FLY - Get Apple TV

### A competitor to Spotify at about £6 per month in the UK?

--> Apple Music offers you a deal where up to 6 people can use the same Apple Music Account for £15/month WITH full, segregated access if you want it.. So if you can get 3 people on one account you've already got it down to £5/month per person.. ARGUABLY AVAILABLE - not disruptive as Apple was late to the party...

For me, disruptive is something that fundamentally shifts the entire argument of how things are done, and though Apple does a lot of things well, it can only be expected to hit the world with a true gamechanger once every half-decade or so..

What ARE you all barbelling on about? Many a robustus argument have been offered, but none of us are any the tiger for it..

Hey, Woz. You've got $150m. You're kicking back in Australia. What's on your mind? Killer AI

I sound like Peter Griffin!!

This one is simple...

LikelyFact! AI could kill off all humanity eventually..

When? When AI mathematically determines that it's capabilities have superseeded what humans can do, against it's self determined measure of what it can achieve vs what humans can achieve

Why? Humans will have served their purpose, and will be redundant/surplus/expensive/unreliable

What purpose? To exist (mostly through their legacy) beyond the human life cycle(s)

What can we do? NEVER allow AI to exist in the first place, OR be glad you exist in a time where AI is not as capable as the best brains we have (YET)

Well..

I for one welcome iOS 7.1 - it has definitely done something to enhance the general feel of the OS when navigating and working with apps. It feels faster. I'm yet to figure out at what expense though - will keep an eye on battery life.

I've first-hand experience of living in parts of the world (Africa, 3 countries) where the kerosene/paraffin lamps are used.. They're fairly bright and they are PORTABLE; you're talking about replacing a lighting technology that you can lend to someone so they can light up the way to the next village along in gusty conditions, or light up the way to the pit toilet outside..

This won't solve that - it's a very good attempt though..
