Obama says US won't scramble jets or twist arms for Snowden

Mitoo Bobsworth
Facepalm

Isn't it wonderous

How the media focus of this event has been shifted from the issue of real concern, i.e. the content of the NSA documentation.

</sarc>

Props to the messenger Snowden for some genuinely courageous actions, but more focus on the message would be appropriate now.

Congress: It's not the Glass that's scary - It's the GOOGLE

Mitoo Bobsworth
Meh

Genuinely curious

With all the controversy being generated around this device, Google must be rubbing their hands with glee as far as publicity goes. However I still fail to see the attraction for Glass - I personally couldn't think of anything more distracting. There's enough tech around me performing this function to varying degrees already.

If privacy is a concern, my observation is that these days it's mostly an academic one - regardless of what corporates or governments may say, your electronic presence has value to them - that's not going to change.

And as far as advertising goes, nothing Google, or any tracking/collating service on the interweb has served up to me (mostly unbidden) has peaked my curiosity to the point of further investigation - people reach people, not algorithms IMHO.

So, are these really game changers, or is the hype exceeding the reality - I'm genuinely curious.

Double-edged sword

Digital literacy is important today & for the future. However, IMHO, a grounding in traditional literacy/numeracy is equally as important & valuable in those formative years of learning - after all, the digital age originally emerged on the back of that system when you think about it. This article is well worth a read & makes some interesting observations for utilising both -

Remember when bluetooth headsets were introduced? I loved watching some proud owner talking to themselves in the middle of a city street or cafe, looking for all the world like a psychiatric outpatient. Really looking forward to seeing someone with a set of these & what kind of stand-alone behaviour they engender - should be very entertaining.

Bloke in pub: "What the f**k are you staring at?"

POW.

Adobe kills Creative Suite – all future features online only

This WILL bite them in the arse.

I work in the print/publishing industry and for me, everything from CS4 on has been bells & whistles. Most CS users I know are still using 5, & most Design/Ad houses & Mag publishers I work for are still running it. Seems Adobe have become too comfortable in their monopolistic statehood. Perspective works both ways, but theirs appears only to work inwardly these days. Time for some heads to roll methinks.

Corporate malaise setting in?

Probably just me, but I get a sense that Apple is entering into another round of standard corporate fog. It first happened when Mr Jobs was booted out of his beloved company & the suits applied their suit mentality, churning out endless ( some would say aimless) variations on a theme. When he did return, Apples revival was, like it or not, a remarkable success.

I'm not so sure it can go a second round of his absence.

Steve Jobs was Apple, love him or loathe him - he was part of the brand. One can only succeed such a polarising personality, and while I'm sure Tim Cook is a fine CEO, the tone of Apple will never be the same. Without that obsessive mercurial energy and marketing/PR savvy driving & directing it I think corporate suitness will eventually take over - maybe for the better, but from my observations and experience, that's rarely the case.

Giant ad company (Google) offers tool assessing worth of ads

Mitoo Bobsworth
Facepalm

So Google has released an app

that assesses its own worth - Hmmmmm.

As an aside, I find it interesting to note how people think (or don't think) of the language involved in the tech/web/IT market - a "hit count" for a business doesn't mean much unless it relates to sales/turnover/growth. It's one of those time-honoured chestnuts, an 'easy sell' line that a lot of people still buy without much thought. A 'hit count' in a boxing match is far more relevant than a hit count from google - see what I mean?

Pay attention to language folks, ESPECIALLY from markenting/advertising.

Arbitrators side with Foxconn in brain-damaged worker case

Mitoo Bobsworth
Unhappy

It is sad -

However, like it or not, this is inclusive in the price you pay for your electronic goodies, worldwide. Boycotts won't do it, protest won't do it - as long as the masses buy in to the perpetual 'latest & greatest' marketing ploys, behind the scene happenstances such as this (& how many HAVEN'T we heard of) will continue. Industry, and the power & money engendered thereof, are at the top of the pile - the price you pay isn't limited to money. Perhaps it would be more appropriate these days to review what one needs vs what one wants.

I can see electronic goods becoming more & more disappointing for the consumer - public patent squabbles such as this one will diminish the ability to create & implement standards in a fast growing market, as more & more of these corporates claim ownership of increasingly petty methodologies.

Apple patents shopping lists

Mitoo Bobsworth
Pint

Apple going Bananas?

From 'Insanely Great' to 'Greatly Insane' - I personally couldn't have dreamed of a sadder commentary on corporate-think & the consumer society than patenting a method for remote shopping. Looking for future revenues is all fine & good, but this? Will they sell it as an app? Will they charge for the service? Or will they simply sue when some other organisation comes up with something similar?

As for myself, I know all the shops in my area, I generally know the best deals for items I'm interested in, I get to see the produce & how fresh/what condition it's in and I get to interact with things called 'people' while I'm shopping, a generally enjoyable experience. Plus, getting to know some of the 'people' that work in the shops I regularly frequent has had a beneficial effect on my wallet beyond the 'todays special' deals.

Besides all that, sometimes I just enjoy doing things without an 'app'
