Re: A simply secure OS ?

@rol

I use Firefox in Ubuntu but without No Script as I found it a pain with many websites. What type of attacks am I vulnerable to? IF possible, please give specific examples.

Re: Why magnetic stripe?

I realise that. However, we should be able to get cards which can be only used for Chip & Pin (i.e. no magnetic stripe). It's rather pointless having a relatively secure id system on a card when there's a very insecure one!

johnaaronrose

Why magnetic stripe?

The obvious question: why do banks still put magnetic stripes on debit & credit cards? Given that all ATMs (though I know that they have not, because when I demagnetised the magnetic strip on my debit card, it didn't work on some ATMs) & merchants have converted to Chip & Pin in Britain, why? I asked my bank why & I was fobbed off. I've also looked at ATM security websites and they give no answers. Can anybody cast any light on this?

HP clinches six week extension on whether to join shareholders' suit against Autonomy

Suspicious

I never could understand (from Autonomy's website) what their products were let alone why they might sell large volumes / have a large turnover. So I sort of appreciate why HP might allege that Autonomy's management have committed fraud.

Justice Ministry to spaff £70k finding out how prisoners like to use ILLEGAL mobes

Jamming

The article quotes: The UK's Ministry of Justice after deciding that jamming the forbidden mobes would be "prohibitively expensive".

I find this hard to believe. It costs approx £50 to buy a jammer that works for over 10 metres radius. Many US cinemas have mbile phone jammers.

Re: Free Sage?

@John Smith

I hope that you're being facetious. The Sage app previously referred to is Open Source & is for Mathematical uses (i.e. similar uses as for Mathematica). It is free. It has no connection to the Accounting package. BTW there is an app called R (for Statistics use), also open source & free, which is equally as good as the commercial ones.

Virgin Media to hike broadband prices by nearly 7 per cent

Virgin's Cable versus BT's FTTC

AFAIK Virgin feeds into your home using a copper cable (coaxial, I think) from their street cabinets whereas BT feeds into your home using a copper cable normally strung up along telegraph poles from its street cabinets. I presume that Virgin's copper cable to its cabinet is shared by other properties in your street whereas BT's copper cable is yours alone to its cabinet. If I am correct, Virgin's copper cable will suffer from contention whereas BT's won't. Am I correct?

'Only nuclear power can save humanity', say Global Warming high priests

But it must be the right sort of nuclear power. Uranium based fission is a dead end due to waste disposal & limited availability of Uranium not to mention terrorist threats. Currently, it seems that Thorium Molten Salt reactors are the way to go.

TalkTalk to block nuisance calls with no help AT ALL from Huawei

johnaaronrose

Mr

I say hello etc, but I do not hear any sound. So, I guess that is someone with a grudge?

johnaaronrose

I frequently receive 'number-withheld' calls where there is no sound on the line. Are these the type of nuisance calls referred to on the article as ooposed to someone with a grudge against me?

BT's mobe interference claim laughed off air by ad watchdog

johnaaronrose

Main problem was WiFI dropping but it also happened on wired ethernet (using 'adapters' through the mains: I forget the exact term). I tried changing the wireless channel but i didn't help.

johnaaronrose

When we f'ibred' up, BT gave us a BT Hub Wireless Business Router. It kept on dropping the line to various PCs & Android devices. So I replaced it with a Netgear router. No roblems since. Conclusion: the BT router was rubbish. I'd be interested to know if others have had problems with BT Hub Routers.

Re: Code does not rot

I remember when I contracted to a very large bank (name starting with a B), it took approx 20 minutes to bootup & login on each morning: everybody switched off overnight. IMO that was wasted time.

Re: SAP replacement?

@ Robert Grant

I jsut Wikipedia'ed and there were 6 Paul Grahams. Did you mean the Computer Programmer? Or am I just showing myself to be a BOF? I don't know which features of SAP would be required in an equivalent: which ones are necessary? BTW Compiere & Adempiere both have modern UIs. But I suspect, that they don't have the necessary functionality.

johnaaronrose

SAP is for saps

Every SAP project that I have seen or read about has been a failure in terms of either budget, timescale and/or meeting requirements. On my very limited exposure to SAP, the UI seemed at least 10 years out of date. Why do people still use SAP?

Re: Simple solution to being locked out

I suggest that Anonymous replier to my message looks at the particular key safes from Wilkos before making comments. The key safe that I bought is made of hardened steel. In fact, very similar ones are provided by some Social Services departments to older people.

johnaaronrose

Simple solution to being locked out

Buy a key safe (approx £20) from somewhere like Wilkinsons. It's attached to the wall using serious screws, so difficult to lever/hammer off. . It requires a 4 digit pin to open it & remove the key(s). Preferably site the key safe out of view.

Gambas

Gambas is a FOSS version of Basic similar to VB without the VB junk & is Object Orientated. Its author corrects bugs quickly & objectively evaluates requested enhancements. It incorporates an IDE, access to modern databases & the internet, online help and a runtime package. It is being ported to Android. Downside is that it runs on Linux though I understand that it can run on Windows using a Unix server program: instructions for that are on the Gambas website.
