Re forking an open source project

The various *buntus aren't forks, they are official variants of vanilla Ubuntu tweaked to different tastes. If one were to fork it wouldn't be allowed to call itself *buntu any more, because that's trademarked by Canonical.

Re: have you looked into step-up transformers

A straight transformer won't shift frequency - you'd need a belt drive motor-generator unit or a rectifier/inverter to do that.

Re: There is a way to get more energy...

But if there was a way to only emit photons from the screen in the direction that the user is viewing it from ...

Pookietoo

Actually I think it might work ... sort of

Assuming the phone antenna is pretty much omnidirectional most of the signal is going nowhere useful, so you can "harvest" around half of that with an inductor on one side, and subsequently you'll have to point the other side towards the mast. The only problem is that you'd want to put the inductor on the side that's against the user's head (because the signal in that direction is attenuated anyway) which won't work too well with the screen. But if you're willing to put up with the hassle of a directional phone you might as well engineer one with a directional antenna, that wastes a lot less power transmitting in the first place.

Boeing 787 software bug can shut down planes' generators IN FLIGHT

Pookietoo

Re: You can't reboot while you're over the Atlantic.

Rather that than on approach.

Pookietoo

re: This assumes the problem is understood

I don't think it takes much understanding to fix the problem: power goes down, auxiliary kicks in, pilots/engineer restart failed generator controllers, everything's fine again. Assuming it doesn't happen at a critical stage in the flight, of course.

Re: My DVB-T stopped working

Have you tried a log periodic aerial? The one I tried (just a temporary set-up - we mostly use cable) worked wonders for our DVB-T reception. It was mounted too low, pointed at the wrong transmitter (according to everyone else's aerials) blocked by large trees and it worked brilliantly.

I prefer the TV not to dominate our living space - it sits fairly quietly in the corner showing mostly comedy, chat and factual programs, types which don't really benefit from an "immersive experience".

They're 99p on eBay, or two for a pound in Poundland. I got one the other day because my large hands just weren't meant for small touchscreens, and it really helps speed and accuracy both typing and writing. The feel is good on the screen, I have yet to fit a screen protector.
