GPUs for gaming, data-center servers continue to drive up Nvidia's revenues despite chip shortages everywhere

roosterdude

"Hardware stocks are low, and aren't expected to recover any time soon"

Understatement of the year.

....what I'd like to know is when El'Reg are going to do an in depth study on the global shortage of 30 series GPUs. The shortage since launch is not like any other shortage that we've ever seen with GPUs it's a completely different ballgame. C'mon El'reg there is a story with this one that needs to be investigated.

What is going on with Nvidia?

What is going on with Nvidia?

Hey all,

I'm used to GPUs being popular at launch and taking a bit of effort and waiting to get hold of but with the 30 series this seems really really odd.... It's been FOUR months now and there is still no real sign of any stock anywhere and the press just seems to be taking not a lot of notice. I'm a bit surprised that someone (el'reg?) hasn't done a bit of an in-depth look into the situation as it seems more than the usual supply chain issues at product launch.

Sorry for the section this is in, I couldn't work out what section to put it in... please move it if needed.

Thoughts?

Isis crisis: Facebook makes Bristol lass an unperson

Other names they don't allow...

My other half has never been allowed to use her own surname "Gun" despite Facebook allowing her brothers and sisters to use it.. Numerous support requests we a blank so she had to go with "Gunn" in the end which apparently is more palatable :-s

What’s new in Hyper-V in Windows Server 2016?

roosterdude

Why?

I've used Hyper-V since the very early days and still do.. I've used it in anger and it's been ok, reliable infact and I like it. I've also built and run large scale Xen / KVM and VMware platforms, though not for a couple of years now, thankfully (life is now far less stressful hehe). But Microsoft... this is 2016... why is there no native built in REST API? Why the bejeezus do they still force people to administer it from the GUI or from that godawful piece of crud Powershell? Spit spit spit.

Someone needs to take that company by the scruff of the neck and modernise them.

Distributed Consensus is the future

@Charles Manning

Bitcoin is an incredibly elegant solution to fiat currency which is controlled and manipulated by our govt masters on a daily basis 24x7x365 in order to keep us all in check. As far as I'm concerned it is way ahead of it's time and whilst yes it is difficult to understand and few in the world really do understand it in great detail (at the moment.. in a few years it will be taught in schools and universities) the same could be said about Einstein's theories after so many years... but that doesn't mean it won't change the world or it should be stopped. Infact it is unstoppable, if countries or governments ban it it will re-emerge in another form. The real beauty of it is that it's a distributed consensus platform and that is the real invention on which everything else is built and I believe that we'll be building much much more than a distributed currency on top of this... already moves are afoot in this arena. And guess what... it's all open source so there is nothing stopping you or I from downloading and studying the source code. This is a pivotal moment in history where we will see the old establishment in a real fight to retain power and resources.. I for one am going to be doing more than just getting the popcorn, this is one to be involved in :-)

One badly put together and run exchange isn't going to bring down Bitcoin itself, although personally I think they're clutching at straws with the "OMG Bitcoin is broken" response - I fear that whoever has their money tied up in gox is..well... goxed - perhaps that will be in the dictionary before the end of 2014;-).

Cable thieves wreak havoc for cops, BT punters

roosterdude
WTF?

Where on earth is the redundancy? BT really are pants.

What I really don't understand is:

This took our most of WGC, Welwyn and many surrounding areas including most businesses in the town centre including most banks as well as the local Police headquarters. But Why?

Why on earth would scumbags nicking cables take out such as huge area. Unless of course BT only backhaul this to the docklands via a single point of failure? What on earth is going on with that? Do we really have a monopoly national Telco running such important infrastructure and not demand that they at least make their exchanges fault tolerent? It's not as if they don't own all the fibre between the exchanges too. Why in their right minds would they not put a resilient connection in which doesn't run in the same ducts?

Unforgivable and something needs to be done about it while this cowboy outfit runs their national monopoly.
