UK top dog for home Wi-Fi usage... almost

Jediben
Meh

Could this be that because our infrastructure and speeds for BB is so poor compared to other countries, we are not put off by the lower throughput and potential interference issues? If my broadband was the usual feeble 1-2mbit connection in the UK, knowing that my devices are not going to be missing out any bandwidth if I use a 802.11g (or even b) home networks compared to the ADSL connection's maximum would mean less work compared to wiring the whole house with cat5.

On the other hand, if I was plugged into a 1Gbit connection in Sweden, chugging my device along at 'g' speeds would be a complete waste of potential speed and money.

I have no idea why the south Koreans are big on WiFi though - more densely populated areas?

Re: Law on their side?

Managed to get 2 of those Kodaks myself. I don't even take photographs but at the time it seemed too good a deal to miss, and in the youth of online shopping the risk of setting a bad reputation for customer service probably swung in our favour. No company would be that naive these days.

Asus: We are NOT killing off Transformer Prime

Thumb Up

Mine arrived a fortnight back (UK) but GPS doesn't seem to function at all. Heaphone socket moved on insertion, caused crack to appear in the frame underneath - very annoying.

Seems to lack enough oomph to playback x264 Blu-Ray images in 1080 but copes well enough with 720 (using MX player pro).

Wifi is functional but not as I expected (20mbit down, 5mbit up on my virgin 50mbit service - other wireless devices max the 50). Won't allow me to steam a HD flick from my NAS, needs to be moved to local SD first.

Doesn't come with micro-HDMI cable which was restrictive (easily overcome by visit to amazon) and haven't yet tried usb data transfer.

Feels great to use, tablet is incredibly light and while somewhat unresponsive for first hour (some touches on on-screen keyboard were ignored entirely) after a full 12 hour charge it functions correctly. Have not been able to source a TF201 protective case yet, a few hours in a suitcase has lead to mild flex in the tablet - no longer flush on one side when clamshelled.

One part of me loves it just because it frees me from my desktop and it has plenty of potential, but the other bit doesn't know what I should be doing to utilise that potential!

Plonk their power stations on that crappy landmass floating out across La Manche, plug it in via underwater cables provided by EDF Energy and syphen off the goodies. Feign ignorance when UK electricity prices increase!

Jediben
Go

EDF Energy have been geared up for building of one of two power stations at Hinkley Point for the last 2 years at least - why are the Gov only saying they approve of the site now?

A planning application for the site preparation works was approved by West Somerset Council in July 2011!

Hackers may be able to 'outwit' online banking security devices

Jediben
WTF?

If they've physically got the card AND the email address you have attached to said online account, AND the password for the email address, AND they have intercepted the POSTAL MAIL that they supply your online membership number via (no email for that, not secure enough) then yes, it's not much of a barrier... but then neither would your front door be after that.

Jediben
Stop

There is a unique online banking ID number that you also need before PINSentry is even involved in the login process. This, in conjunction with surname, is another barrier. The reason they only pass you the sentry device in branch is that they already have you online number (as they supplied it).

Any external purchase would require THAT to be supplied by the user as well.

Jediben

If they do that, they only have a PINSentry authorisation to make a payment to an account the target has set up, not to their own target. Without the same PINSentry device, they cannot generate a working one time code that would be produced to transfer money to the account THEY want.

Sure they can be in your account, but they can't move money to any account that the target hasn't keyed in.

PinSentry is thus - login to account with PINSentry + card. Transfer of money requires ADDITIONAL number generated by the PINSentry from account number + PIN + Card + £value.

Even if they redirect you to a hoax site, how do they make you to input THEIR account number into the PINSentry you have in your hand, unless they have even more fake websites tempting you with whatever it is you are paying for.... And then it's not the PINSentry at fault!
