Re: Believable

I have done a fair amount of 3rd party IT work in banks, in all those times my details / ecrb number had already been submitted to the banks I was visiting, I also had to call the bank to confirm my arrival time, near enough to the minute and then still show ID through the tellers window before I could get entry to behind the counter.

It doesn't make sense - unless it's an inside job too.

Microsoft gives TechNet a one-off reprieve

Tezfair

you learn, you sell, you teach, you support. Maps and then (for me) Technet was the foundation of my business built on MS software. Trialware simply doesn't work for me as they are often not the full package or have something missing.

As a long term MS based mobile user I took the first steps to android and I have been pretty pleased. The other week I was involved as a gofer at a college rolling out macs and saw first hand what improvements apple have done in intergrating into AD.

The closure of technet has made me see other platforms in a different light, and I can honestly see alternatives now being viable. It's a big learning curve, but learn or die.

MS, enjoy your dwindlling client base. Your ship is sinking and your turning off the pumps.

Poor quality

Of all the brands we have supplied to end users, whether domestic or enterprise, WD are the only brand that give us the most problems. There's not a month that goes by that we sent drives back. Earlier this year the replacement for a month old HDD failed and that also had to go back.

It looks the same other than a token icon in the bottom left corner

Why can't they simply make a pure desktop version and pure tablet version? And app this, and app that. p*ss off. Its just bloody software wrapped up in a fancy name.

I can see consumers now opting for Android on their new PCs (HP slate21) and the many PC variants that will now spring up. MS will simply pull out of the desktop market opting to tie up the business market in the cloud only.

Re: Jumped

WM / WP it's the same thing as far as im concerned.

I had tiles / jump lists to the point that I had so many that it would have been quicker to have none at all and have the 'next' arrow closer to the top. At least in WP7 the arrow was at the top of the screen, then an update shoved it right at the bottom. Its these changes that MS seems to think helps.... but doesn't.

Not usually having to scroll in emails, sub folders and only the last week's emails keeps everything minimal.

Tezfair
Unhappy

Jumped

As a long time user of WM devices I did the unthinkable - went to Android. Had the S4 and just find it so much easier to get to places. No transistioning chunky squares, no scroll, scroll, scroll to the bottom of the tiles just to get to the next screen.

Android works well for me. main screen for phone / contacts / emails / calendar, left screens for play, right screens for biz apps.

Native email doesn't work for me as I use sub-folders heavily but im trialling an app which shows unread emails in ALL sub-folders.

Bye WM, life was good at 6.5, but 7.8 was torture.

Need advice

My contract due at the end of the month. I have a Lumia.I hate it with a passion, and not that interested in iphones. So which really is the best for average 'old IT man' usage..

S3, S4, Note, HTC one?

My ultimate pet hate is transitions. If I press something I want it to happen instantly, not have to wait 0.5 second to watch the icon swooshing around the screen arrrggggg. Can any of these phones turn off any / all screen transitions?

I have been playing with the S3 at Tescos but spent more time working out how to bypass the 'tesco system lockdown screen' than testing it

I look after lots of XP desktops running against SBS 2003 box. Am I going to upgrade? no. Why? businesses can't afford to ditch a working machine for a new one

I will accept there is a security risk, but on the basis that all my client use non IE browsers and have industrial strength AV and AS on the servers and on the desktops, their systems will not suddenly all stop working on 2nd April 2014

I have one customer that still uses Server 2000. It amazes me that its not died, but it still works, its not exposed to the internet, so where's the problem?

Re: Support

I don't have an apple, and the nearest apple store is 60 miles away, but I use Windows Mobile based phones, HTC / Nokia etc. I have a business contract and when the phones started playing up TMobile replaced them the next day (usually battery related)

Had I lived within commuting distance of a TMobile store I too could have had a same day straight swap. So in some ways the apple store is not offering anything extraordinary.

Im guessing here the difference is apple replaces the phone regardless of contract whereas TMobile only offers instant replacement to businesses.

dipped my toes

Over xmas 2012 I treated myself to a new server, chucked 16Gb and virtulised my live SBS 2011 with disk2vhd. Dropped it into Server 2012 hyperV and it pretty much ran without issue, and has been solid since. This is now part of my DR plan for customers.

Only issue I had was that im not able to make auto snapshots because I use direct access to a hard drive rather than a VHD so all I do is pause the sbs, take it offline, copy the vhd and restart the sbs vm.

My lad has a Virtual XP running a minecraft server in hyperV too.

This version is far easier to use than any others, shame the gui on server 2012 is metro-y, but classic shell helps :)

Retailer challenges Visa penalty fees in data security dust-up

Tezfair
FAIL

???

Why can Visa even fine companies? they are only a financial company not a government body.

I have a customer who is in the process of having a PCI DSS done from sysnet, yet the criteria that the software compliance check was done was actually quite a few years old and I drew their attention to this - and was ignored.

If I recall the compliance failed on something like SP1 on exchange 2003 not being installed yet they were running SP2 and all the patches that MS had put out was installed too.

Im clearing down my debts with visa, some of my unused cards are now 29.9%, so it seems that they are just getting far too greedy. Time to stop using visa completely. Robbing gets.

Re: Unfortunately I've dealt with enough of these types of customer service issues...

"if anything goes wrong with it then you'll get a brand new computer". I once overheard this sales spiel in one of the DSG stores where the salesman basically told the customer that if they bought the extended warranty then just before it expired they should "accidently" knock a mug of coffee over the computer so that it broke and they'd get a replacement under the warranty and "because this model will be out of date you'll get the equivalent model so in reality you'll get a free upgrade"

It happens in different industries where people can feel they get one over their boss.

Late last year I had the rear box on the van replaced as it blowing. the exhaust company fixer noticed the 3 year warranty on the middle section was due to expire the beginning of this year and said for me to call in in Dec with the warranty and they would replace it.

I didn't bother going back as it's unnecessary and only leads to more expensive exhausts for everyone else.

It does make you wonder why if they can do the same job using an iphone why BT didn't just have a cheap tablet.

If surface was able to run Windows 7 and thus all 'normal' software it would have been a success.

I have an andriod tablet I use for playing quick games in the evenings, the wife has an Ipad 1 for playing scrabble. Neither of us want to sit at a desktop and use a big computer / laptop.

Where the surface would have worked is as a direct laptop replacement with maybe some form of docking station for supporting a larger screen. This way it would have been the PC during the day and play at night and all the software like accessing network files, outlook etc., means that the end user could switch in and out of work as needed.

I use a laptop so that my work follows me (IT Support) when needed. A surface could have been an ideal business tool.
