Samsung ships two smartphones for every one Apple sells

Re: Twice as many but....

All that shows is how much more Apple charge for the same thing.

And I'd go with Samsung makes everything from Skodas to BMWs, Apple makes BMWs minus the sunroof, ABS and on-board computer and fits a platinum gear-knob and Kobe-skin seats, puts a square opening on the petrol filler cap and charges accordingly.

I like Music Unlimited, but the quality is way down on that of Spotify. Also, the apps in Spotify are a big bonus IMO, as well as LastFM scrobbling support.

WiMP in Nordic countries is also very high quality.

Possibly

and I mean "possibly".

Well. A large proportion of smartphone users, especially iPhone users buy more for fashion and to be seen to be cool.

In recent times Samsung has started to seen to be cool, possibly in a geek chic kind of way amongst the shallower members of the public.

Now, In Merica, losing is seen as something only losers do. two plus two etc?

Probably complete dren, but just an idea.

Re: "click the corner, type the name of the program I want and up it pops"

Jesus H.

The point is, the start menu isn't "missing", it just looks different, and has added functionality, such as an app store and the ability to use it nicely on a touch screen. And even on a non-touch screen, some of the apps are rather nice. Dare I admit it but I like the recipe app in glorious fullscreeniness.

The only real difference is that there isn't a physical button.

Amazing I got downvoted just for liking it too. MS haters, iSheep? who knows?

Been using on my laptop since the consumer preview.

I like it. The "metro" screen I treat as a full screen start button. Works exactly the same but with extra functionality imo. ie, click the corner, type the name of the program I want and up it pops. Or use one of the ones that I have sitting as a link. I even like some of the free apps that come with the new UI.

Biggest bonus, I can reboot and be typing in a search box in my browser within 30 seconds. It was at least 3 times that with Win7.

It also feels quicker.

I will be taking the opportunity to upgrade cheaply when the full version hits.

Re: Yes...I'm that guy

Agreed, me too.

IIt's on my gaming laptop. I don't have a problem with Metro (and in fact some of the free apps are very nice), but Itreat it as a full screen start button.

The OS boots much quicker and is generally very swish.

The only thing I would change is an option to turn off all the hot spots around the screen in desktop mode (other than the "start button")

Looks good to me.

Not being a big fan of the closed Apple approach (great kit, but give me a choice dammit), I bought a Galaxy tab.

And will I let anyone else in the house use it? With suspicious eyes as my email accounts, dropbox, personal stuff is all there, available. I did try an app lock, but then that's annoying for me too.

Add to that the frustration of not being able to use 2 or more apps side by side and I rarely use it now.

So this for me looks great. Very stylish and will run my existing Windows apps if I go for the Intel version.

I can see it replacing my Galaxy tab AND laptop quite easily at the right price.

I disagree. While I do use full websites on my phone (HTC One X), I prefer it when an app is available which formats it so I don't have to keep pinching and zooming.

Microsoft unveils Windows 8 'release preview' for June

Totally agree

I've had the CR on my laptop since it was released. Took me a couple of days to get used to it and it's great.

More importantly, my brother put it on my old mums computer as she had XP on it, and she loves it.

If you want "windows", it's the same, pretty much, just that the start menu takes up the whole screen. Is that too difficult to grasp?

Re: It's sh*t. It's Vista all over again!

You can. When you press the start corner, it displays metro. Just start typing as you used to. It comes up with the apps that begin with what you've typed just like in the old days, only in a full screen interface rather than one arbitrarily small corner of the screen.

phr0g
Thumb Up

Actually, I quite like it.

I was disorientated at first, but I'm loving it. Installed on my G73 laptop. No touchscreen. Got all my shortcuts sorted, Learned a few hotkeys.

Finding apps is just as easy. It's not like I ever actually scrolled down the list of "all programs anyway"...I simply type a few letters...exactly the same as you can now do on the metro desktop, it brings up search and a list of matches.

Spotify v. Pure Music

love spotify

Yes, some music has disappeared, but Spotify saves me money. No more do I buy albums that get 1 listen and then consigned to the CD rack. From 3 or 4 a month I'm down to 3 or 4 a year.

Quality is excellent and I can access via my Squeezeboxes, PC or HTC phone. (I use FM transmit in the car too),

They really need to get lossless playback working on the PC, it must be simple as it is perfectly lossless through Squeezebox.

wrong

Lack of the ability to extract the files wrecked that.

Oh and that it doesn't actually sound any better than CD. The only reason it sounds better is the mastering. That's it.

I've been through the whole HD downloads scam. I used to buy studio masters from Linn and HDTracks...

So one day I downsampled some to 16/44.1 and did some extensive ABX testing in foobar...

Guess what, the 16/44.1 sounds EXACTLY the same.

HOWEVER, the 24/96 AND 16/44.1 downsampled versions often sound better than the CD version...why is that I wonder??? Answer...The mastering.

phr0g
Go

yes, and yes, and once again yes.

Download foobar2000 (a music player), then the ABX comparison plugin.

Get one of your CDs and rip to WAV.

Now convert that WAV to a 256 kbps MP3 using EAC and the LAME codec.

Now put both files into foobar and try to tell them apart in a scientifically proven way...You won't be able to.

I may swap to WinPhone when the contract is up on my DesireHD. That too comes with all the non-removable HTC stuff and the utterly pointless Soundhound.

To be honest, I don't really mind if it comes with Facebook. I find it useful, and I really like the look of the new interface, abnd the upcoming Nokia 900 looks fantastic.

Let's revisit this in 12 months when hopefully W8 will be live. The more competition, the better.
