Bill Gates bans progeny from iPhone Nation

b166er

Clarification

Every piece of Microsoft hardware I've owned has been flawless, including Xbox 360, various MS Mice over the years, MCE Remote, Sidewinder. (never had a Microsoft keyboard, but then I'm a 2 finger typist, but even then I expect they've got a high MTBF per key).

If what Adam T quotes is correct, then it's hardly Microsoft's fault surely? You design a processor then subcontract that to a massive chip foundry and they fuck it up. At least Microsoft did the honourable thing and replaced them all.

Did you mean the Rio Karma? Unfortunately, when I picked up the Zen Touch for the knock-down price of £85, the Karma was no longer on sale. I looked at that and the Cowon.

For the record, Microsoft owns the OS market due to good business acumen and the fact that Apple were too stubborn to reduce the price of the Macintosh accordingly. This is why William Gates III had to allegedly bail them out with large cheques periodically to avoid a dust-up with the Monopolies Commission. The world is yours for the taking, Bill Gates just did exactly that. He's also now benevolent enough to give a lot back to the world.

Erm...

Where I come from bling=chav, so what you're saying to Bill Gates is, go on allow your family to degenerate into a bunch of chavs?

Noooo nononono, keep your kids well away from the iPied iPiper of iPoddery. The majority of Microsoft's hardware is excellent and extremely reliable, besides there are many alternatives to the Zune.

I'm now slightly annoyed that your pointless trolling puff-piece has elicited a response.

Alien

Hold on a minute

Is it A,

Leader A has decided that he's pissed off with the amount of power Leader B has, so Leader A demands that because you were born on the same arbitrary piece of land as he, you must now go and kill someone you've never met who happened to be born on a similar arbitrary piece of land 'belonging' to Leader B. If you refuse, you will be shot or imprisoned.

Or B,

War is a 'necessary evil' that helps us keep the population down?

In my opinion, If there be any advances in the art of warfare, it should be the increased efficiency of clinical strikes for capturing either Leader A or B and in so doing, ending the war and pointless loss of life that accompanies it. Presumably nowhere near as lucrative for Leader A/B & Lockheed Martin Et Al.

Alien, 'cos hopefully they're scratching their heads over this war nonsense too.

Other platforms

OK, but seeing as how most games are written for 4 platforms; PC, XBOX360, PS3 and Wii, it just seems that to crap out some linux code while they're at it would help kick off a revolution.

b166er

Peter Kay

I'm not sure if what you said made sense. Of course sales will be poor to the linux market if the game doesn't support it ?!

See, the thing is, most hardcore gamers are performance junkies and therefore set the trend for more pedestrian gamers. Were the hardcore players able to play their games on a presumably very optimized and therefore fast linux version, this would filter down to the more occasional gamer. Swings and roundabouts I know, but I bet most hardcore gamers would rather be buying their games for linux if they supported that platform. I know that ID at least, wrote native code for linux, and I salute them for continuing to pioneer! I bought Quake4 in part because they supported linux natively and I wanted to support that.

I also know a lot of architects who would be happy to see Autodesk write cross-platform. (mainly for MAC OS X)

Guess for really open computing, I'll have to wait for 'cloud gaming' http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/01/amd-supercomput.html

Head > Wall

But it's not a crap OS Mick.

This is obviously more about GUI these days than anything else.

People knock MAC OX S because of it's coloured-pencil using UI

Others knock Vista 'cos of it's 'lipstick'

Meanwhile the linux camp are torn between KDE and Gnome (and others)

The only thing that will lift linux out of the geekbin, is shiny GUI wizards and gadgets, so that windows refugees can cope with the change. I'm all for that.

I personally prefer linux to NT, but that's a world away from saying NT is crap.

And while we're asking game devs to code for linux, how about Autodesk, Adobe etc.

b166er

Plebeians

How many of those who are saying "lipstick on a pig" etc, have even tried this beta, or the rather good Windows 2008? You fucking plums ;-p (or Mac-loving trolls mebe)

Columbia disaster 'not survivable', NASA concludes

b166er

RotaCyclic - graceful degradation

Because, my friend, the Orbiter was a compromised design, built a long time ago and it is now theoretically possible at least, to design CEE and a CM that could enable crew to survive the experiences of an 'offnominal' entry in a redesigned vehicle.

And rules, because institutions like NASA tend to focus on budget before safety! (something that won't happen with Virgin Galactic (and they'll be doing the re-entry phase in the same manner))
