Re: Loyalty my ass

Getting into a new market is important to them so for a while that will translate to being good for the customer. (If they ever get a decent share it will stop).

If Xbox starts to drop seriously low then it will become good for the customer again.

The best stuff for the user always comes from Microsoft when they are trying to compete.

Nobody ever got used to the Cell chip or used it properly the whole time.

The problem is the hardware in these new consoles is so cheap and nasty.

LEAKED: Redmond not allowed to sell 'Nokia' smartphones after 2015

h3

I have a Lumia 800 and what I like about it is nothing is running until I start it specifically. Which means the battery lasts for at least 3 days between charges. The browser strips annoying adverts by default for whatever reason.

(Compare this to my Android tablet where there is no way to stop a Google Play Services update which basically kills the battery. Anything greater than 3.2 is totally broken).

Amazon Prime Music opens – but where's the streaming music?

h3

Warner is part of the problem as well.

At least for that Lego Movie situation. They were going to sell the Blu-ray at 25$ then they changed their mind and put it to $40. Leaving Amazon to take the hit. (Which I presume they will).

Has Google gone too far? Indie labels say it's crunch time for The New Economy

h3

Re: "Indie Labels"

If it is owned by one of the big 3 record companies it is not indie. (They have supposedly indie labels that they own and operate somewhat separately but the definition is to do with ownership).

(I thought there was 5 but seems there no longer is).

Major labels since 2012 (Big Three)

Universal Music Group (part of EMI's recorded music division absorbed into UMG)

Sony Music Entertainment (EMI Music Publishing absorbed into Sony/ATV Music Publishing)

Warner Music Group (EMI's Parlophone and EMI/Virgin Classics labels absorbed into WMG on 1 July 2013)[2]

All they need is someone to right click the taskbar then go to properties -> navigation and tick the suitable boxes to disable most things and prefer the desktop and then they should be fine.

With the latest update it is basically back to normal then. (Metro apps appear like normal ones on the taskbar). Desktop Apps listed first - Default to the Desktop. Disable the corners for the charms or recent apps.

Can just add shortcuts to the apps on the Desktop if you want as well.

You can avoid metro basically entirely now.

Apple, Beats and fools with money who trust celeb endorsements

Beats are real scum (At least at the moment).

h3

Seamonkey

I am going to switch everybody I know to Seamonkey I think. (That will work at least until they decide to merge gecko into Firefox like seems to be the fashionable thing to do).

h3

Re: Sounds to me like...

There used to be absolutely loads of great stuff with no adverts whatsoever when I first started using the internet. Just people posting about stuff that they were passionate about.

That was the stuff worth having and it is almost impossible to find any more. Everything is just made to show advertising content. (Or copy pasting from other similar sites).

The old systems were good.

Usenet (Still miles better than web forums both in terms of the idea and the implimentation).

Web (Displaying Content nothing else).

Email (Plain Text only).

IRC (Chat - Seperate terminal window so not distracting to anywhere near the same extent as instant messages).

There was a pretty good solution for every problem. Now everything is forced to be done via the web for which it is badly suited.

If Google (Or anybody else) had a way to search for advertising free content I would certainly use it.

h3

Firefox are getting seriously annoying.

They are changing the sync thing again and making it less secure. (If it was on more than one PC then you always had a way to resync).

Re: Indeed

Nobody (Other than Google who has full control over everybody with Play Services) full control over their Android devices other than people without Google Play Services on it. (Or a never ending fight against Google. All the location tracking type stuff in it is mandatory certainly for my Android 4.1 device. Need to mess around with the startup tasks even then Google has backdoors that reenable it periodically).

Even on a Nexus the only way to have a decent experience would be an AOSP rom and the Amazon Appstore and that is it.

Anything using any of my battery should be of value to me. (If it benefits Google also as a side effect so be it. No way I am happy with the way they are going about things).

Google+ is another cancer affecting the whole of Android. (Downgrading to older versions of Gapps gets around it other than potential accidental updates).

At least Apple seems to allow disabling location access to Applications. (Only Apps I want to be able to use my GPS are Navigon / Google Maps. Google won't give me sensible choices for that).

Play Store won't let me search for apps in a way that I want. (i.e that don't use full internet access or don't include IAP's or admob). Dunno if Apple is much better in that sense.

Least goodwill I have at the moment is towards Google (Even search the changes they have made make me have to expend much more effort than I ever used to.)

Then Apple. And Amazon I like the best just because they treat their customers well. (Suspect my battery will be the best it has ever been on my old tablet when I finally switch to AOSP + Amazon).

Ninten-DON'T: Wii U bomb blows Mario Kart giant off track – but new console promised

h3

Sony lost more.

Still less of a loss than Sony made and across different sites the numbers all seem to be different.

Or not include the interest on all the cash they have. (Or put the money spent on the share buyback into the figures).

There is no way Nintendo would have made as much from the Wii if they didn't control the whole thing.

(Wii Fit made them absolutely loads more than even GTA5 made).

If Nintendo does go 3rd party then anything remotely interesting that they make less and less of at the moment will go.

Look at Sega (Football Manager / Sonic / Total War / Aliens) they are no going to do anything else.

Nintendo would end up doing Mario Kart / Zelda / 2D Mario / 3D Mario and that is it.

Part of the problem of multiplatform is sacrificing quality for portability. (PS4 games like e.g Tomb Raider - False Advertising Edition I have tried play like PC games on a PC that is not really powerful enough.)

They are ok for the foreseeable future anyway and the next system is going to be a common platform between handheld and console. (Hopefully giving them enough games).

At least Nintendo are still making traditional Japanese console games. (Sony might as well be a Western company - Microsoft is a Western company which is fine). Even thought they are so easy that it is almost a waste of time. But there is nothing else. (Everybody else seems to make lifeless dull series of cutscenes with a drab game inbetween). Even the Sony or Ubisoft platformers are absolute rubbish.

Still a long way to go before Nintendo has real problems. (Unless somehow they end up switching to a vulture of a CEO).

Tesco to tout its own smartphone – now THAT'S an unexpected item in the bagging area

h3

Maybe

If the branding is not too bad (Don't want to be advertising Tesco for them. If it had say that Hudl Logo I would be ok with that) and the bootloader is unlocked I might get one presuming it is half decent hardware and well built.

A war between Tesco and Amazon can only be good for the customer.

Tablet boom quiets down a bit as growth slows

h3

Re: Any surprise?

Sooner or later you have the choice of either stopping using the Google Play Store (And so having Google Play Services force updated) and using no apps from there or only using the Amazon Appstore.

At some point the device will become useless like my Xoom has due to that problem. (The last ROM it got made it the best it has ever worked). There is absolutely no way around it - Whatever Play Services updates changes everything from working perfectly to totally laggy.
