Windows 8 tablet freezes in Microsoft keynote demo

I believe going tits up is a feature of win 8. Expect it often.

Testicle-boiling new iPad ignites fanboi fury

toadwarrior
Thumb Down

A whole 12 degrees hotter than the ipad? Oh the horror of it all. I ran games on my old laptops before that I sworn were causing physical damage to the system and, at worst, I would put a fan on and aim it at the machine.

112 is nothing. I had a desktop that wasn't even breaking a sweat when it reported 114. These people are pussies.

WTF... should I pay to download BBC shows?

toadwarrior

It shouldn't be free forever

Use your PVR if you want it free forever. There is no additional cost to them when you do that.

However if they want to repeatedly stream the content there are bandwidth costs, server maintenance and all that. Plus I suspect they have to pay out fees to the studios, actors or whoever for each play since it's a broadcast.

The tv licence is relatively cheap on a per day basis. It's not really going to cover you streaming TV all day I suspect. The problem is streaming almost certainly costs more than pushing it over the airwaves. So something has to change. I don't think £1.89 is that much for the ability to keep it and especially if that means you can come back and download it again as many times as you want.

Fragmentation bomb wounds Android in developer war

toadwarrior

Re: and

I think it's more that you can't even rely on certain hardware even being there so unlike a desktop where you can count on there being a keyboard, mouse, etc you don't get that luxury on mobiles and unlike a desktop you can't expect people to go out and buy the required hardware.

If you phone has no camera it's always going to be that way. I'm sure screen resolution is a pain on phones (mainly because you are dealing with a smaller screen but it's probably no the biggest issue they need to worry about.

toadwarrior

Re: and

The point wasn't that it's impossible to target parts of the android market it's that you can't deal with the whole Android market.

Telling everyone that Android is bigger than iOS is misleading. It is but you'll never be able to target all of them and I suspect some developers are realising they can actually target more people for a lower cost on iOS than on Android.

Also, as an Android owner, I know the system for limiting who sees your app isn't perfect but more importantly when it opts not to install it, you get some generic message that's not very helpful and implies it's a network issue. Hopefully that's changed in newer versions but the over all user experience on Android in the app market is a bit shit.

New iPad sales hit 3 million in first 4 days

toadwarrior

MS and other companies can easily fudge their numbers because they generally don't sel directly. Where as most of Apple's sales probably are directly to consumers. So it's going to be harder to fudge numbers anyway by giving numbers sold to shops rather than consumers.

15in MacBook Air will go HEAD TO HEAD with MacBook Pro in April

toadwarrior

Re: Or

What's the battery life and all the other features it comes with? How much does it weight and what's its build quality?

A lot of people focus on very small set of features because that's all their laptops can win at and the reason they can manage to have much more ram for less the price is because it's in a cheap ass case with a flimsily attached LCD screen that will be in a questionable state 6 months later.

Having all that power in a rubbish case and no other real features reminds me of kids that rice up their little hatchback cars. They thinks it's bad ass but no one else does.

If you mean Dell will give you nothing and charge you for the smallest things and in the end it's still going to be an ugly bulky plastic laptop then you're right.

toadwarrior
Thumb Down

Re: Or

They're not the same. When I bought my Macbook I had originally meant to get a Dell or something else reasonably priced.

But once you add in all the features to make it equivalent to a macbook and factor in having to buy a 3rd party SSD just so you can throw your HD away and put that in, you end up with something that's nearly the same price as a Macbook, twice as ugly and half the battery life.

Dell was even charging £30 for bluetooth. Something that should be standard in a laptop and certainly shouldn't cost more than a bluetooth usb dongle.

toadwarrior

Re: Or

You also get twice the weight / size and at least threes times the security issues all with reduce battery life and yet it still manages to be cheaper.

Enormous Apple market cap swells and swells ... like a bubble

toadwarrior

Re: Uhm...

Mac marketshare is still going up rather than down. So his point still stands. Apple is responsible for more than one product that can be considered successful.

Give the state of the Mac before Jobs re-joined apple and Microsoft's monopoly it's amazing it's still around let alone growing.

Euro Android devs: Google's hanging on to our pay

toadwarrior

It's no surprise Google takes longer to pay out than to collect but the thing that draws my attention is it seems that under no circumstance does Google ever offer some sort of real support.

Maybe I've not tried hard enough but I don't ever recall be able to contact Google support directly either through a phone number or even email address.

It's also through their shitty suport forums where you can submit your question to be ignored by them or for some idiot to reply to with something of no value.

I do seriously wonder why anyone would want to invest their time into a company's products when that company appears to flat out refuse to support you in any meaningful way.

iirc, for android development too they point you to stack overflow for help too. Yeah I'm sure that's fine most of the time but actually I rather pay for a developer licence and get real support from people within the company like Apple.

Panic on the streets of Google+? Choc Factory hires Digg founder

Google+ is a technically superior product to Facebook, imo, but no one uses it. That's the problem it has. It's also a harder problem to solve. You can't just throw the smartest programmers at it and hope for the best.

Re: This could be the tipping point...

A lot of those points are due to MS effectively killing the netbook market.

Aside from the touchscreen aspect most of those things apply to a macbook pro which has an excellent boot time, awesome battery life, solid build quality and minimal maintenance.

I'd say most of those things also apply to my asus eee (with SSD) with xubuntu on it.

World's Raspberry Pi supply jammed in factory blunder

No surprise

Everything for the raspberry pi seems to be a fuck up and delayed. I'm not sure if they're doing it on purpose to have a laugh or maybe that it's the management that should have been sourced in China, not the manufacturing.

Bikini clad Princess Leia spied shakin' booty in Star Wars game

toadwarrior

no thanks

Kinect games generally are awful but clearly this one is going to suck hard if they feel they need to bribe star wars geeks with princess leia dancing. It'll be cheaper to just get out my old action figures and fonder myself with them. It'll probably be more dignified too.

Apple: We never said Siri would actually work in the UK

toadwarrior

Re: Apple - pay attention

Evi is not the same as siri. Siri can do anything evi can do. The issue is speaking the results rather than poitning them to a web page. For that functionality siri does more in the us and evi doesn't do it at all.

Ubuntu for Android: Penguins peck at Nokia's core problem

toadwarrior

I don't think unity is awesome but maybe you find it unuseable because you can not adapt to change rather than it being broken. It's better for someone to try and innovate even if they fuck up. There after all hundreds of linux distros I'm sure you can live if one goes off experimenting and you find yourself in capable of adapting.

toadwarrior

I like the move

I'd still rather not have android as it's been a pita for me already but I like the move to real linux for phones. If it continues and we get a full fledged ubuntu phone I'll buy that.

You have to give them credit for at least trying to mainstream Linux even if thing like Unity aren't so great.

New Mac OS X: Mountain Lion roars at unauthorised apps

Re: Non-gardened apps already cause complaint

Anything you download it asks if you want to open it. It's a protection and for a company that supposedly hates open source they do seem to have GPL'ed software in their app store or is that some open source guys that sold their soul to the devil and became closed source?

toadwarrior
Thumb Up

It's probably for the best

It's better to fence off bad software from idiots rather than make us use anti-virus. I'm not sure how this is any different really from trying to push people into using your Linux distro's repo. Of course people who will hate anything Apple does will moan but who cares, they won't buy a Mac.

Now Proview seeks ban on ALL iPads coming out of China

toadwarrior

apple haters make no sense

There is nothing apple does that the other companies don't do as well and at least in some apple is just protecting their work unlike microsoft who is just out to profit off of android.

That doesn't mean everything apple does is good or acceptable but the hate specifically for them is a unnecessary. It strikes me that a lot of it comes from people too "hip" to use popular products and therefore must hate on the company making them.

NoSQL databases not just for the 'cool kids'

toadwarrior

somone's afraid of being made redundant

Sounds like all the DBAs are commenting early to hate on NoSQL.

Yes, there is truth to the fact a traditional database work fine in many / most cases but that is no reason not to try something new if you can afford the risk. I'm sure standard DBs will go away. It's not a question of if but when. If more companies try something else then we're more likely to see an improvement in those other things.

Doctors sick of anonymous-coward NHS feedback commentards

toadwarrior

it's the british way

Anyone who has ever looked at the BBC's website (especially when they had the old have your say area) can see there are a lot of angry people using the internet to rip on anyone in hope (I assume) to make themselves feel better.

Anyone with a serious concern with their surgery should bring it up then and there and I suspect in most cases it'll be taken care of.

Instead they act like nothing is wrong, probably say thank you numerous times, and then when they get home rage on the NHS site.

The doctor shouldn't have lost his job. He was completely right in his response.

Angry Birds boss: Piracy helps us 'get more business'

toadwarrior

Piracy is wrong

I know there are a lot of tight asses out there that want to promote the idea that piracy is ok but it's not. Sure piracy up until now hasn't really been a problem but if everyone takes a "piracy is awesome" attitude then where is the incentive to pay? Once the majoirty of your user base pirates then you're fucked.

Piracy is only ok when most people pay which you won't get if you just consider it aacceptable to pirate. Otherwise the shareware model wouldn't have died.

Piracy can help some but like anything else there is no one size fits all model so just because it worked for AB doesn't mean squat for others.

Google shares tank after disappointing financial report

toadwarrior
Thumb Down

stupid

This is what's wrong with the economy. A company can be making billions in profits and grow 25% and still it gets looked down upon as a bad thing.

It's also because of this, I suspect, that companies like google do waste a lot of money looking for other things to make even more money and in the end just waste time on stupid side projects because they feel they need to impress the pants off of people that are just concerned with raising things up as fast as possible and dumping it when they're done with it.
