Asus boss flushes down tabs, says 'Windows RT has not been successful'

Don Jefe

Re: So, build quality is good?

There really aren't any worthwhile apps for RT. That's a major part of its problem. You can't even see all the available apps without having RT which is another problem...

You can look on the Win8 blog and search for RT apps to see some of them though:

Sounds Reasonable

A $300 price tag for this fashion statement is far more reasonable than $1200. Getting the price down to the sunglasses range like this will eliminate the guilt associated with laughing at individuals because whole groups of people will be looking silly, not just a lone nerd.

NSA gets burned by a sysadmin, decides to burn 90% of its sysadmins

Terrible SharePoint Oversight

Ok, so they're canning a bunch of admins. But they're SharePoint admins... At first scaling back HR sounded like a good idea for their security, but then I remembered the amount of resources we dedicate to keeping our SharePoint system working properly.

This will end badly for the NSA.

Re: Hmm..

At secure US facilities you are let go at the security shack when you come in to work. You always know people are getting let go when there's a civilian (HR drone) and extra security at the guard shack in the morning.

Your belongings are mailed to you after they've been reviewed. You never get close to the building again.

Re: Who actually cares about the bribes?

Bribery is a part of doing business in many parts of the world. Anti-bribery laws have absolutely no effect on that. It is supremely arrogant for people to even believe they do.

What those laws do effect is how the bribing gets done. Instead of a business paying a cash bribe to get a job, government officials push preferential financing or relaxed export controls and they get the kickbacks. All the laws do is remove the middle man so officials can big up their credit and rewards. It's the same game, but its OK because government is doing it.

Enterprise whales leave R&D to the startup minnows

Wall Street Killed R&D

Big research labs are basically gone now, Wall Street doesn't approve of R&D anymore. That's why it's hard to be creative and innovative from inside a large tech company: R&D can't get approval from the highest levels because the shareholders won't allow it. Even Intel, a historic leader in R&D, has talked about how the days of blue-sky R&D are over.

It's really sad to see the era end, but everyone is so focused on today's dollar they can't see tomorrow. After all the profits have been finally been squeezed out of the decades old inventions of Bell Labs and PARC true innovation will make a comeback. Right now people are still figuring out how to maximize WWII era technology so it is likely to be a while before it happens.

Re: Gross stupidity

I'm not sure the BP/Deep Water Horizon event has had much of an impact on safety. Transocean profits are soaring and BP is well on its way to wriggling out of its settlement payments. They've already been granted injunctions for some individual payments and are using that as leverage to prove all the payments are unjustified. It's a big, big mess. It isn't getting much front page coverage but a little Googling will bring it up.

Re: Energy Deception

Excess resources only lead to reduced consumer bills in a supply and demand environment. The global energy sector hasn't been a true supply and demand environment in a very, very long time. Supply is regulated to maximize demand, not allowed to flow unregulated.

Here in the States we've been fracking heavily for a while and the non commercial consumer impact has been either minimal or nonexistent to most individuals.

Low Figure

I'd be all for another, valid, mobile phone option but $32M seems like an awfully small figure for the design, manufacture, sales, distribution and warranty of, what I assume, is supposed to be a mass market product. More power to them if they can get it done for that, but $32M doesn't go as far as you'd think when you're cranking out physical product.

The Real Issue

There's a nasty thing happening in this discussion. The term 'troll' is being equated to bullying and that simply isn't the case. It is an effort to control conversation and prevent conversation: It is a very effective way to prevent satire, which has been the bane of political and public types for centuries.

Going outside really isn't safe. You could be kidnapped, raped, photographed, killed, catch cancer from second hand smoke, killed by a terrorist or speeding motorist, irradiated by WiFi or be decapitated by a wind turbine. Best to stay indoors and take your vitamins.

I say it in jest, but far too many people are scared of absolutely everything and it is bad for society and the offspring of those that live in fear. It is the mindset that allows government to walk all over the people.

Give up your privacy so Big Data can FIX GOVERNMENT

Targeted Assistance

Targeted, non monetary, Assistance programs are nearly always clusterfucks. They spend as much or more time and resources limiting the assistance to 'those who qualify' as they do on actual assistance. The smart money is in making programs like this available to any and all. No privacy concerns, less expense and it raises the bar for the entire country instead of a subset of the population.

The assumption that only the poor and unfortunate benefit from guidance through 'the system' is extremely shortsighted.

Patent tank VirnetX fires 'secure domain name' design claim at Apple

Don Jefe

Re: I fail to see the validity of this claim

That's a patent troll tactic. Ideally you get the vaguest wording possible approved then use it to attack as many people as possible. Actual technology companies are occasionally guilty of this too, but 'real' patents tend to be far more specific. More specific patents tend to hold up better but don't offer as many ways to attack.

Allowing the vagaries is a failure on the part of the USPTO. At the end of the day their internal rules are responsible for all this bullshit.

Artists Impressions

I think the artists impressions serve a rather important purpose. They give people something to latch onto and see where all the money goes. The artists impressions are to Congresspeople what pie charts are to dim bulb management.

They also give the younger generations something to see. Convincing kids to embark on a science career is hard enough without letting on too early that their career will be spent looking at spreadsheets. That's one of the unpleasant truths that kids should be spared from, for a while anyway.

Just my two cents worth. I support artists impressions of 'space stuff'.

Lawsuit: Infosys abuses visas to discriminate against US staff

The US laws say that the job has to pay at least market rate, as defined by the labor statistics people. In addition you have to show that you have attempted to fill the role using citizens or work authorized permanent residents.

The only way I can see to cheat the requirements would be if they advertised a market rate, but negotiated a backroom rate which was lower. The govt doesn't verify what you're actually paying them, just what you say you're going to pay them. I guess that would work until something went wrong.
