Don't Menshn the snore: Chick-lit queen's jabber site killed in its sleep

Re: Why are dicks so successful?

Well, you see, there are essentially three kinds of people. Dicks, Pussies and Assholes:

Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes: assholes that just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fuck this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit!

Derivative

Even at the time I remember that the WH40k space marines were seeen (by myself and many of my tabletop rolplaying friends) as derivative of a number of other SF RPG's, in particular GDW's Traveller (of 1979 vintage) which had Imperial Marines, battle suited soldiers of a space empire - themselves essentially derivative of Star Wars storm troopers........

Re: Forever eclipsed.

I suspect that it's not really relevant that it may be shaded, the real purpose of placing it at L2 is that it is gravitationally stable so the reflectors and sensors in the telescope are not subjected to gravitational distortion (and so are more accurate).

The reduction in overspill radiation from the sun is a bonus, but not really the main reason as it could be fairly easily filtered form any data collected.

I know that several attempts have been made in the past but why has no-one yet come up with a decent wearable wrist computer thing (like Leela has in Futurama* - http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110706080160/en.futurama/images/d/d8/Leela-wristband.jpg ) ?

We have flexible screens, flexible batteries and plenty of interconnectivity tech so you could have a small screen normally that acts like a 'smart watch' with a ~4" display that then folds out to a bigger display when needed for surfing / watching video / etc, it could be a phone (either with a BT headset or, cooler still, you hold up your hand to your ear in the universal 'phone' gesture to use.....) and whatever else you need in a tabletty / ereader stylee (maybe the 4" 'outer' screen is colour e-ink and you open a folded proper OLED display to use the more graphics intensive apps). You could even have a slide out real keyboard at the lower edge of the screen.

The whole thing wrist mounted onto a spandex band and waterproof so you wear it everywhere under your sleeve, it could even monitor vital signs, recharge from vigorous wrist movement** and silently signal the wearer by squeezing their arm.

BTW - Reg posts count as patent applications, don't they ?

Unbelievably vast quasar cluster forces universe-sized rethink

Great Bu

Re: Can't make sense of this article

The point of the original assumption that this observation makes less likely was that mathematically for the universe to appear to be the same for all observers then the largest such 'smudge' would be 1.2 billion light years, anything bigger would produce a big enough difference in the 'texture' of the universe that it would look different to different observers.

So whilst there are random variations in the appearance of the universe, these variations reach the level of non-randomness once they grow to more than the 1.2 billion light year size - it's like looking at the random fuzz on a TV showing just static, how many black pixels would need to cluster together before you started thinking they were not random after all ? This cluster is a big block of black pixels together which suggests that either it's not random or the assumption is wrong.

Re: Friday 13th

All the Tunguska blast did was knock over some trees and make a couple of pretty sunsets.

Yes, this impact would cause tidal waves and (bearing in mind the sensitive geological situation of west coast USA) probably earthquakes but it would be on a par with a big natural disaster, like a volcano erupting (bigger than Krakatoa but a long way off the sort of 'supervolcano' scenarios that would result in having to sacrifice Bruce Willis), so:

It's not big enough.

Segway daddy unveils DIY weight-loss stomach pump

Great Bu

Ironically.....

....one of the more common reasons for failure in the insertion of PEG tubes (the feeding tubes that are essentially the same thing in reverse, often required for stroke patients who are unable to swallow safely) is 'excessive body habitus'*.

The reason the insertion fails is that the method for insertion involves putting a gastroscope down the throat into the stomach, pushing the end against the front wall of the stomach and switching on the light at the end - this light then shines through the stomach wall to the outside and guides the surgeon in where to insert the feeding (/emptying) tube (which is done by just shoving a big plastic spike throught the abdominal wall and into the stomach). The pushing of the endoscope forwards and visibility of the light externally ensures that other structures are not in the way of the spike when it is inserted (bits like the liver or transverse colon).

The insertion can't proceed if the light is not visible as the surgeon cannot be sure they won't damage something else in there. In waps** the flab can be too thick to see the light even if there is nothing else in the way so they are significantly harder to insert these tubes into.

With those festival toilets, when you get to the Monday and look in and see the turd pile rising magnificently over the rim by a good 8 inches, it always occured to me that some previous cutomer had opened the door, seen the pile a mere 4 inches above the horizon and thought to themselves "I can fit another one on there...." and presumably then carried out a feat of ninja-like balancing well beyond most Monday festival attendees in order to lay the final crest of 'mount feeshus' without also creating arse dimps on the summit.
