London's Gatwick airport suspends all flights after 'multiple' reports of drones

BenM 29

marketing ploy

I reckon its just a marketing ploy for Phalanx - they have no chance of intercepting hypersonic devices so now they need to bolster their income somehow... drones would be a much easier target....

I wonder if they offer a ground based turret system suitable for airports?

Alternatively, as others have mentioned, this seems to be a great way of causing maximum disruption in a foreign state should such disruption suit your nefarious plans...

I don't recall remain saying that... Farage certainly did... He must have been a secret remain campaigner :)

It matters not one bit that your interface with the MITM is secure if the backhaul isn't.

I reckon that sending a drone to Surrey Nanosystems would be better and cost about the same.... Vantablack S-VIS ftw

Re: "already been blamed for one fatal crash and three others involving serious injuries"

2) ....How often have you had one of those?

Once in 30 years of driving.

2 contd.)...How often have your airbags gone off?

Once

2)If someone drives into you, they're almost certainly going to do it at a combined speed which would render the passenger cell useless anyway

I walked away with bruising and mushy brains that lasted for 6 months... the other not so much; she was in hospital for a fortnight. Each travelling at approx 60 mph, 30% front overlap head on. Passenger cell worked in both vehicles - what speeds were you thinking of?

There is nothing in there defining indecent... you are allowed to possess images of naked children as long as they aren't indecent.

Indecent is not defined because Goedel's incompleteness theorem.

P.s. How did my phone know that the two words following Goedel's would be "incompleteness theorem"?

Being something of a Pavane/Roberts fan I have to agree... also the public persona of pTerry leads me to suspect that he may have read Keith Roberts in the past. I meant to ask pTerry if there was a connection but it is to late now :(

"Please put the items in the bag"

Why does that phrase create such a "road rage" like temper in me?

I have put the sodding items in the bag you daft machine, if you would just give me slightly more than 1ms to move them from the scanner to the bag.

In my experience... Morrison's are the worst - the daughter and I have a deal of fun breaking the machines in new and interesting ways. Once they upgraded the software and the daft machines stopped the incessant chant, however the next update restored the lost "functionality"

Waitrose have two systems - one where you do the whole checkout think yourself (Godalming is one store with that) and the other where you scan everything then take it to a till where a person handles the payment. Hardly ever have a problem with the Waitrose machines and only been checked about 3 times ever.

B&Q - I never have a problem with and their hand scanners are the easiest to use.

Ikea - meh - about average I guess. I will try them out tomorrow.

Tesco/Asda equally likely to utter the eldritch ire inducing words... but usually quicker than queuing behind someone who insists that 112 items are fewer than 10 in the express lane.

expand/minimise comment behavior

Hi,

The behaviour of expand/minimise comment behaviour appears to have changed in the last day or so.

On desktop/Ubuntu/chrome 23.0.1271.17 it works as expected - hit the expand/minimise link and comment expands/contracts with no fuss.

On galaxy sIII with T-Mobile jelly bean and chrome 25.0.1364.169 expand increases the space properly but shrinks the font size from small to miniscule. Minimise reduces the expanded space a bit but the font remains shrunken.

On Windows 7 chrome 24.0.132.57 the link behaves properly.

This could be a chrome bug rather than El Reg... but you are better placed to report that than me.

As an old-ish git I would like the font size to remain fixed or i will have to start carrying a magnifying glass as well as the phone!

The Register Android App

FAIL

Not good is an understatement

Galaxy SIII - stock OS 4.0.0, kernel 3.0.15-1029495-user

Installed ok,

Needed an immediate restart on application startup.

Settings gear does nothing

Go to comment on this story "Check your network connection" dialog box displayed (if the network connection is dead why did it manage to load the story? and BTW its the same network connection over which I am posting this)

Hit phone back button

Returned to El Reg. app but page blank and no buttons work - other than the phone back button.

Exit application

Restart

Rinse and repeat.

Uninstalling.

El Reg, you fail in product testing. Galaxy SIII isn't exactly uncommon and nor is 4.0.4 android.... though the latter may be amongst other commentards :)

There are 4 (the fifth is a collection of the previous 4) books written in a style that Verity has emulated... I guess that counts as limited as none of them are very long (in comparison to Potter or Tolkien).
