Just look up the standards for VDSL, Cisco has a nice graph too. The standard your after is VDSL1, as VDSL2 only applies to Hybrid coax, where as vdsl1 operates over twisted or straight pair copper.
Your maximum speed is 55mbps with VDSL1, *IF* your within 300 meters of the node. "what coverage area will each node be responsible for is also a good question".
upload is 3mbps max.
after 300 to 1200m speeds drop like a rock tied to a rocket facing the governments black hole of a budget. After 1200m your better off on adsl1 anyway. all the numbers by the standard assume the copper is in good condition.
there will simply be more people close to the "exchange" then there are today, other then that the real world improvments for 70% of population will mean you can download that movie in 30 mins instead of 90mins. and forget about streaming out more then your vga quality skype call (when its not raining).
unfortunately the only areas that have contracts signed and cant be stopped due to cost are the ones on the roll out map. I believe NBNco is madly trying to sign as many contracts as they can before september and this is also forcing them to be nice to some contractors that aren't delivering without a kick in the pants.
The Coalitions Plan also assumes Telstra hands over the copper for free (LOL). there 5 year time frame comes after the last 2 years of NBN building under labor completing build tests and getting the majority of the transit network in place. then there's the requirement for powered cabinets on every street instead of passive nodes.
FTTN was viable in 2001 when telstra first looked at it, when the copper had life left in it. They got nerfed by the liberal government of the day then. going back to FTTN is a stupid, expensive and poorly thought out move designed purely to reduce the initial cost and time of the build but will in no way reduce the total cost of investment unless the vast majority of houses invest $5k each.
I use to have a hands free set for the bike, riding around doing server admin jobs. more often then not i would get a call from work asking me to go somewhere else while i was riding. which was fine, occaisionally they would start asking for advise on an issue or update or similar demanding question, at that point I end the conversation and call them back when i stop.
I can usually see Texting drivers 500m ahead, there the ones that cant stay between the lines or maintain speed.
any effort in thinking about my response to the other party was time i wasn't assessing the situation around me although i could maintain speed and lane position i wasn't picking up on the little clues that have oh so often saved my life on the road.
user: my computer says "Check Video Cable" what do I do?
Me: Well you can check that your video cable is connected at both ends, but the computer might simply be turned off.
User: how do i check if the computers off?
Me: should be a green light above the power button if its not on the computers off.
user: there is now power button the computer doesn't have one.
Me: *pause* Um yes it does, every computer has one its on the front somewhere. (few different models floating around wasnt sure which one this guy had)
user: no im telling you it doesnt have a power button.
I insist it does. end up walking down to his desk, lift the posted not turn it on and walk out without a word.

itunes charges more for australians to purchase then americans which is interesting since our dollar has been on par of stronger for a while now.
foxtel you have to subscribe to and have a box downloads are a mute point with them anyway as you get IQ.
Bigpond tv you need to have telstra as an ISP first and when you do you get a media box from them, no difference from foxtel there.
When the media organisations want to provide a service to us I will want to pay for it. until then shove it.
