Want to spin up Ubuntu VMs from Windows 10's command line, eh? We'll need to see a Multipass

Re: I love WSL, since it made scripting on Windows usable after 30 years :)

There are probably simpler and more elegant ways but this works for me.

date([management.managementdatetimeconverter]::ToDateTime((Get-WmiObject win32_operatingsystem).LastBootUpTime)) -Format dd-M-yyyy

I would normally do the date as yyyyMMdd but wanted to match it to the OP's format.

The only concern will be a need for another certificate if I want to SSL the site separately. Other than that I'm not worried as there is currently no auto-renewal.

Energy supplier resonse

I received an email from my supplier today in response to a query after they said my old meter was being phased out, and implied a new new smart meter was the only available option.

<snip>

There is no legal obligation for an individual to have Smart Meters fitted, this lies with the supplier.

All energy companies are tasked with fitting as many Smart Meters as possible by 2020.

I have made a not on your account and you will not receive any further correspondence regarding Smart Meters.

BBC to demand logins for iPlayer in early 2017

barstewardsquad

How long

How long before they need more than just a postcode? After all it is hardly a deterrent to find one to enter, say DL98 1TL for example. I was unable to check if they would accept that one though as apparently they are doing maintenance to their systems that are used for signing it and registering.

I can see the headline already, BBC iD site down to unexpected demand for accounts.

Re: Curious

It's curious how the company comments are at odds with the obvious facts. They should apologize and pay for the costs involved without fuss.

The obvious facts being that the customer told them it had happened and so it must be true?

UK's climate change dept abolished, but 'smart meters and all our policies strong as ever'

barstewardsquad

Yes you can say no.

Yes you can decline your supplier's gracious offer to replace you old meter with a "smart" meter that will work with their systems. It may not however work with any other supplier, and may not be upgrade-able to become compliant with other suppliers.

Supposedly there is a new standard that is coming out that will allow meters to be used across all suppliers.

iOS10 bloatware deletion

barstewardsquad

I wish Google would follow suit with Android. My tablet is so bloated with Google apps I don't want, never use and can't remove that there is no room left to download apps I do actually want to download and use.

You can on the newer Nexus devices such as the 6p.

Of course crApple will be suing Google for this even though Google had the feature last September

Don't split Openreach, says BT, and we'll splash BEELLIONS on broadband and 4G

barstewardsquad

So BT say they will do what they should already be doing if they don't have to split up their cartel?

Funny how they suddenly seem to be able to promise to make Openreach fix a problem, something BT currently say they are unable to do. My "superfast" broadband with an estimated 30Mb only gives me 7Mb because Openreach say the line is "good enough" and BT can't make them fix the iffy copper.

As said above, it does at least make the trees grow, albeit in this quantity the Amazon rain forest will have enough fertiliser for a millennium or two.

barstewardsquad

Or the houses are at the end of a length of cable that Openreach won't replace as "it is working fine" despite attenuating the expected 27Mb connection down to 7Mb. Still BT did what they were given a load of beer tokens to do so I can't complain.
