Oh no, Joe: WinPhone users already griping over 8.1 mega-update

Duncan 4

its awesome!

Applied to to mine and my wife's. Loving it all other than cortana voice recognition, isn't for me as I have fingers, guess if you're a hands free roadwarrior it might be handy. I loved the look and feel of WP before but its coolness rating has just been multiplied by 10. As is often the case ita the smallest stuff that makes the biggest difference! Basically love it an no problems so far either

Love it

I've updated my 925 and my wife’s 820, I know it's a developer release but what the heck! It's a huge update in many ways. The biggies for us are the home screen, I now have everything I need including 4 email accounts and several apps without the need for scrolling and it just looks so much cooler adding a background to the tiles. Swipe typing works perfectly and coupled with the WP dictionary is very effective. I had a play with cortana (I like to call it Cortina as in ford) and it works well but voice recognition isn't really for me as I can type, guess if you're hands free this kind of thing makes sense or if you think you look cool speaking to your phone "phone! please call mum." I loved my WP before now I just love it more, given my old iphone to my 10 year old son, after all it's just a toy in comparison.

Past experience tells me I probably should have waited for a full release before updating but couldn't resist, so far so good guess, time will tell...

Nokia to Devs: PLEASE DON'T make Nokiadroid apps look like WinPho

market share

A great way to get a gauge of market share is at your kids Christmas play, all the parents hold their phones aloft for all to see. At our play this year there were windows phones everywhere.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it ... Win Phone 8? No, it's APPLE'S iOS 7

Re: I feel like I have a stylish, niche product that sets me apart from the herd.

As another lumia 925 owner I have to agree, switching to this from my (pretty old) iphone was like coming out of the dark ages! It's a thing of pure beauty. I have to say though IOS 7 looks like a big step forward and not before time IOS is getting old but was starting to look a heck of a lot older than it is, does look a bit windows vista esk though at a glance. I expect it'll be a design that gets tweaked to perfection over time. who knows I might switch back one day but I think they've got a long way to go before that happens...

did I mention how much I like my Nokia 925 lol

Re: Thats it Luke, let the hatred flow through you...

beyond absurd, but at times comic :D unreasoning hatred towards MS has been around almost as long as MS itself, nothing changes but the world still goes round and while it does most of us are still using MS products among others happily. bit like teenagers hoping for some form of revolution this lot will grow up and pass the IT graffiti can on the next gen sooner or later. Start the revolution now and down vote this post ... lol

Windows 8.1 Start button SPOTTED in the wild

Duncan 4
Go

windows 7 user

I've been holding off upgrading to windows 8 for a while now, have it on a tablet and it's perfect for that but for my pc where I work rather than surf and play I've kept to windows 7 for a number of reasons, looking at this sneak peak MS have probably done just about enough for me to make the move. It's not everything I would have wanted but possibly I need a push from time to time to move with the times, defo not ready to give up the start button just yet, my career has been built around that think like so many others I'm sure. i'd give this 5/10 its satisfactory for me to upgrade to. BTW I'm a big believer in live tiles and the metro interface it rocks on tablets and on phones but not the desktop or at least not yet!

Microsoft conceals job ad in Bing homepage

Duncan 4

Re: @Duncan 4

if a prerequisit for a job was that i did use bing or IE i wouldn't apply and if in an interview that came i i would take the job either lol luckily for me thats never happend or anyone i've ever know.

Imagine if it did tho and i lied and then one day someone spotted me ! actually using IE!!! breach of contract... door ! lucky no companies like that actually exist in the realy world and if they did i wouldn't be offering my services...

Next time you have an interview i suggest mentioning your strong feeling about IE and Bing they might be impressed and give you the job, but i doubt it!

Imaging a boss like that no ie, no bing, blue pants only on a friday, no employees with the initials MS! right this has got silly enough i'm off... back to WORK, my register session is done for another few months, articles and comments are getting worse every time i come here! suggest you lot go back to playing war hammer or something which the rest of the world gets on with something that might very well include IE and Bing and might not :D

Re: I may add...

hit f12 in it and you can debug javascript add breakpoints etc etc as browser debugging goes it's pretty dam good, i've used firebug in the past which is also pretty awesome too since things got soo much better in ie i don't feel the need often anymore. recomened a try if you havent recently.

Re: I may add...

fairly silly remark, not sure what land you live in but i've worked with many talented developers who only use IE, infact many organisations insist on only using IE. Bing less so, i probably use it 20% of the time invariable google first but if i'm looking for something obscure and google comes up blank i try bing, sometimes it pays off , well worth a go an good techie who didn't know this would be missing alot of tricks.

If you're actually responsible for hiring techies and you approach it with that attitude i would think you're a pretty crap at your job. in reality your probably just a diseffected youth instead.

MS bashing looks more and more silly as time goes by, i remember that start of my career in the windows 3.11 days when it was the fashion to bash MS and as a young upstart wanting to fit in with my peers I joined in as well as with some other questionable fashon decisions i made back then but I look back and crindge! time to take off the silly looking clothes and grow up i say.

you poor sad soles who have to cling on to such a non story, truth is the surface is an awesome device while it might not be apple or android but fact is windows tablets do many thinks nothing from either apple or android currently do. try it with an open mind if you are capable of that before knocking it if not, better luck in finding a better story than this to hang your hat on.

Re: Nokia NEVER learn

possibly another reason why nokia doesn't have a nokia 1, 2 ,3 is they've made more than a handful of phones in their time also the range is genreally wider than one line, iphone is one at a time as they know thats all the faithful need

i want one

I've used the 710 and windows phone is undeniably brilliant!! As an iPhone user who never remembers his camera for anything important and is sick of dodgy pics, this is perfect. Haven't figured out where I'm gonna keep this in the summer when I don't have a big jacket pocket tho, no that's not an invitation for a suggestion from a fan boy!!l

Nice one! For a company whose main business seems to increasingly be marketing and litigation this must be a really bitter pill to swallow. If Steve were still around heads would be rolling.

Microsoft takes on tablets with keyboard-equipped Surface

Duncan 4
Thumb Up

tablet utopia!

For me this is one step closer to tablet utopia! I want a device like an ipad thin touch screen etc for when I’m on the sofa surfing or on a train and just wanna check the weather or read the news. But at times I need more than silly apps I need or would like the table to be able to flip to a more functional computer of pc if you like. I’d like to the able to write and work on documents write and send emails possibly remote connect into other machines and work remotely using my tablet as a thin client for this I need a keyboard touch is fine to tapping in a URL or filling in a form but that’s where it stops. And I need a fuller os than that of the ipad and I need a keyboard, if someone can do that and keep it tablet like, it’s a game changer.

Good sign is that it’s clearly got the apple fan boys knickers in a twist too.

Apple cofounder Steve Jobs is dead at 56

Duncan 4
Unhappy

He'll be missed by the industry

I remember seeing him holding that first ipad when it was released and thinking, “thats nuts he's totally lost it, it's a big iphone and it'll never take off”. big time egg on face for me! He was an exceptional visionary like gates who somehow could see what the next ‘missing’ device or product was .

Apple products are generally not the best in the class and don’t offer great value for money either which is why I normally stay away but a number of the devices I carry today are based on apple products. Where apple/jobs excelled by far was making him (self confessed geek) cool and making electronic devices appear cool too. He had a massive effect on the whole tech industry and he’ll be missed but it even his competitors as well of course by those twits that queue up at midnight to get the latest ipad and then clap each other on the way out  if they need a new leader I am available
