Space Commanders lock missiles on Elite's Frontier Devs

Re: If I'd wanted a connected game I'd play Eve

"Second ships are purchased with in games credits, and in no way can be purchased via real world money..."

No. In-game credits for real-life money is incoming. It's even in the KS FAQ:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous#project_faq_42659

"We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.

We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay."

Frustration with Elite:Dangerous boils over into 'Refund Quest'

Splodger

Re: Arguing over nothing

Genuinely: Good for you!

How about those that purchased when 'offline' was promised and it was why they bought in. Then it was pulled due to a 'creative decision' (after what, 2 years of development, 4 weeks before launch), and the developer kept the money. Then refused (sorry, dealt with them on a 'case-by-case' basis) refunds.

Thank you Mr Baer, and RIP.

Re: I want it

(One of) the main problems is that the game is nowhere near 'release ready'.

For all of the development cycle (until now, just before release) there was going to be an extended 'gamma' testing phase.

"It'll be ready when it's ready", "No repeat of FFE/Gametek debacle", "Look at what's in the DDF for what's in the game".

Yeah, right.

Massive disappointment.

Re: Why is Win 8 and Win 8.1 seperated?

I'm on Win 8.0, and that's where it's staying.

No app crap, or any other tiley charmey rubbish. Just security updates thankyouverymuch.

The only reason that Win 8+ is creeping up at all is because it's almost impossible for your average punter to purchase a Win 7 box/laptop.

Microsoft: We plan to CLEAN UP this here Windows Store town

Re: Hello pot, this is kettle...

Um, WTF does Windows need an 'app store' anyway? Are people so brainwashed?

All traces and links to the 'app store' was one of the first things that was scrubbed from my Win 8 box (hence still Win 8.0), right after installing classic shell.

Re: Mostly Harmless

Elite:Dangerous has currently just entered Beta, is shaping up to be fairly awesome, and will be released commercially before the end of this year.

An entire scientifically accurate galaxy simulated and explorable? Fly to any dot in the sky you like? Terrific flight models and in-depth gameplay? Grown-up conflicting power-blocs, and some hostile aliens 'perhaps' waiting for humanity out in the inky blackness? Anti-griefer mechanisms baked in?

Yes please.

The first expansion after release will provide seamless planetary landings on scientifically accurate as possible environments plus wildlife, oceans, etc and will be at least as impressive as the initial release.

Oh, and it's widely been reported as the best Oculus Rift experience.

Can't believe Mike Plant didn't check it out.

Multiplayer Elite to debut on May 30th

Splodger

Re: you approach a station..

The game is currently still in Alpha, and there will certainly be robust in game measures to stop all that: griefers will be *severely* punished.

Would just like to correct the main article: multiplayer has been in the game for months, it's just the next (Beta) phase that's landing on the 30th May.

With a 100 billion star systems, it's already looking epic, it's the first game I've been even remotely anticipating for a decade or more.

Windows 8.1 Update: Throws desktop drones a bone but still as TOUCHY as ever

Splodger

Re: Windows 8 was built for one reason only

Well as someone still on Win8 (not 8.1), using classic shell, has deleted all the MS noddy apps, refuses to sign up for the app store experience and hates 'charms', is there a compelling reason to get this update?

Re: Crystal cove

Yes, it has the IR LEDs, they are under the outer shell which is now made of IR transparent plastic, apparently to protect the LEDs as much as for aesthetic reasons.

The final consumer version of the Rift has also been confirmed by Palmer Luckey (OculusVR founder) as having a higher resolution than 1080 in the following Engadget interview:

Virtual reality? Two can play THAT GAME, says Sony: New headset revealed for the PS4

Splodger

Not an Oculus beater

Trouble is, it's PS4 only, and they will have to turn detail/resolution/texture/physics down to get 60fps in stereo on that platform. "Different optimisations" I think Sony euphamistically referred to what they'd be doing graphics wise.

The LCD screen will cause problems - Oculus went for OLED which made a massive difference.

Sony's effort looks technically slightly better than the Oculus DK1, about on a par with their HD model with added tracking. It's not as technically good as the Crystal Cove prototype which OVR has taken as a bare minimum - the spec for the consumer version is expected to be even higher.

Oculus have their event later today at GDC (18:00 UK time).

Here's Sony's press release for their VR headset along with the tech details:

The upcoming Win8 update/Win9:

Will it still have MS Skydrive cloudy bollocks baked in to the OS?

Will it still have utterly shit wifi network management?

Will it still call programs "apps"? (I'm not a teenager FFS!)

Will it still attempt to force me to have MS accounts & sign up for the ridiculous "app store"?

Will it in fact still have the ridiculous "app store"?

Will it still only have a help function if connected to the internet?

Will it still force people to hunt down settings options? (Clue: put them ALL in "Settings"!)

Will it still have swipes and fecking wanky "charms"?

Will it still refuse to work with peripherals that worked perfectly with Win7?

Will it still be intrusive, annoying and goddamn infuriating?

Etc.

Fix all that and the rest, otherwise no. Thanks, but no.

The consumer OR will be at least 1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels, so over three times the pixels of the VR920s.

Head tracking will be 6dof rather than 3dof. And MUCH more accurate.

FOV will be at least 90° (>110° diagonal)rather than the VR920s 32° (like looking through a cardboard tube?)

Latency will be MUCH lower: well under 20ms.

Cheap and robust, developer excitement and support.

So not much better than the VR920 really...
