Dell moves 40,000 Ubuntu PCs

Not sure if this is good or not.

Considering the somewhat blunted nature of Ubuntu and Dell for that matter it's something I hope people find them useful.

QuickTime streaming media exploit targets unpatched bug

Alan Donaly
Alert

Symantec wrong, maybe.

It's possible either US-CERT or Symantec are wrong the following from isc.sans update of earlier diary.

"We have received a report that exploits are now working for Vista, XP, IE6, IE7, and Safari 3.0 on Windows. Keep in mind that other attack vectors may be vulnerable as well."

As well as firefox.

if so maybe thats why MS would want to patch it.

Red Hat jumps on Amazon's cloud

Interesting

Knowing when and if you need this would be the hard part that and figuring out whether or not your making any money or giving it all in extra capacity fees.

So I ran yslow on this article and you flunked,

Senate bill proposes to outlaw pretexting

Alan Donaly

Only reservation I have

is how will these be enforced, just selectively against people who have made the FBI look bad, or will they finally be investigating all the crimes these laws focus on. Having laws is one thing spending the time and effort to enforce them is another.

Pretty much everything I was thinking, why bother disputing it. We are the Great Satan and we have pretty much admitted it what are bloggers going to do with that.

Tor embassy 'hacker' raided by Swedish Feds

Alan Donaly

They had to change

their login password, and user name, and stop sending them in plain text over Tor. The kind of information you could have gotten using his method was potentially damaging. He did some countries a great service by outing this problem, but they won't aid him now the people who were spying on them, strike back at him. I knew they wouldn't, governments are always the same, they never want to admit they screwed up security wise, so helping them is dangerous and completely thankless.Best to just ignore it, and mind your own business. Why did he have so many PS2?

it's kind of funny though because I felt confident of using Intel only cpus motherboards etc because I knew unlike what some people say Intel goes to great lengths to support Linux. To tell the truth if it works and it's a better value I am a whore.

Apple's Leopard rejects latest version of Java

@Ken&Bas

Never said I was a Java developer I was and am developing Java code for a project. I was in a hurry earlier but you must really get a kick out of amanfromMars . I do math just fine. I wasn't buying a laptop and I ended up building a PC myself.

Alan Donaly

Not just a little problem

I looked hard at macs before deciding they were a little too pricey for the muscle I needed basically to develop Java applications I didn't have any idea this was in the works once again my frugal nature saves my bacon.

NetApp losing 'spew dot oh' blog war to Sun

Alan Donaly
Stop

blog ain't blog

Blogs are for real actually held opinions which is not what this is about at all companies have been engaging in this hearts and minds campaign approach in the dead tree space for a very long time. There is no difference between this and some damage control on an oped page of a major newspaper. However either way it's mostly bogus you will notice that neither side makes any legally damaging statements that would be almost impossible if this weren't carefully controlled hype. Do the lawyers cringe no they had to approve every line.

Facebook sued for mis-sending dirty texts

Alan Donaly
Alert

hmm maybe

I wouldn't be so quick to test how much their immunity is worth I'm not saying their wrong but being arrogant to a court in this or pretty much any country I have ever heard of can get you made an exception to legal precedent (or get laws changed). I would hate to see this immunity go away because facebook sent dirty texts I have also heard of stranger things happening.

Ubuntu's latest OS not so Gutsy

wait you don't understand

don't change OS's if you don't have a crying need not if it works basically you get the best fit of hardware to kernel and freeze it there if you get a new computer you go back and get the latest otherwise your wasting time and going to have all kinds of problems. Stop playing with your OS and get to work.

Ballmer again: AT&T and Verizon should rule the airwaves

Alan Donaly
Thumb Up

Will be late as usual

Ballmer just shows what has always been MS lack of foresight late to the Internet the only thing they care about is exploiting their stranglehold on consumer and office desktops. It would never occur to them to curry market for their hosted applications by fostering wider coverage and competition in wireless pricing.

Did MoD chopper buzz sunbathing au pair?

Alan Donaly
Paris Hilton

funny

A couple of days ago I was buzzed by a CH-47 Chinook at treetop and didn't feel a thing on the ground didn't really blow any dust up the trees waved in the breeze and I could see the Pilot just fine so I find this whole story a bit hard to believe. If you see something you like it's hard not to take a closer look(or damn near impossible in some cases).

Watson suspended by research lab after race row

Alan Donaly
Alert

mostly beside the point

There have been many stories of people with no appreciable brain matter a residue on the insides of their heads caused by fluid buildup the fact is they continued to function some in responsible roles in government. The fact is we don't need all the intellectual capacity we have all races have roughly similar brain sizes and none of them use all of it in this area genetics is useless because you can survive to child baring years with much less brain power than any modern human has so there is no evolutionary advantage to weed anyone out so genetics doesn't apply here. Watson fails to see this as he is a researcher in the field of genetics and the last thing he wants is to be irrelevant which in this particular case he is.

Boffins plot to disrupt underground black markets

Hard to judge

how much better Yahoo with panama is but I think price might be part of the issue last I heard people were getting less for more with the Goog and were threatening mutiny mostly medium sized mostly web based businesses where they can link sales to advertising very easily. Hitachi halves hard drive head size

Alan Donaly

Not sure if this is good place

to bring this up but WTF apparently in the US they are deciding whether to block imports of the top hdd manufacturers because of a patent being used without permission in the fabrication process anyway the one thats not being mentioned is Hitachi and all I have seen for the last couple of days are Hitachi commercials if they do block Seagate Western Digital it might mean cheap hdd

s for all outside the USA. I didn't make this up it's been in Ars Technica and on the USITC site.

Anti-fraud site turfed offline after Joe Job attack

Alan Donaly

domains are cheap

You have to be willing to do some work in the security world bad guys fight dirty and cheap hosts hire as few and as cheaply as possible so having more than one site is a must mirroring software can help so can doing a little research on who is the most reluctant to pull a site. I looked around for a while and found several not bullet proof but just really stubborn hosts in the US I don't have a clue about the UK but there must be someone with some balls.
