'Disruptive innovation' is nonsense? Not ALWAYS, actually

James 36

blah

Personally I think the secondhand patent market should be killed, patents for inventor only, they should not be saleable items.

On driverless cars as a committed petrol head I like the idea of people who see cars simply as a means of transport having an option that gives them the convenience of a car without the hassles of ownership.

i want to own a car as I like cars but if I could have access to a driverless car for commuting or social trips, or even family hoildays (including family camping which might fall outside of the use case) then I could have a wet ware driven car for fun,

This would make me happy, though making me happy probably won't lead to global success.

Microsoft in 1-year Windows XP survival deal with UK govt

James 36

“By combining demand, on behalf of Central Government departments and the wider public sector, Crown Commercial Service has demonstrated the benefits of government working as a single customer to achieve best value for the taxpayer, whilst continuing to build good working relationships with our technology suppliers.”

or in other words,

due to the inability of the civil service to make a decision we have had to deal a large deal with a big incumbent

'Amazon has destroyed the unicorn factory' ... How clouds are making sysadmins extinct

so I see my retirement in 20 years being contracting as infra arch /sysadmin at exorbitant rates to fund my dreams of classic sportscar racing,

awesome

though on a more sensible note I have been experiencing more customers just thinking that infrastructure is easy because that complexity is hidden to an extent by cloud. They fail to grasp that setting up an ipad is different to building systems across geographically diverse data centers servicing 10s or 100s of thousands of users will multiple conflicting requirements. This lack of understanding may lead to a future full of opportunity or it may not.

James 36

Rumsfeld

summed it up in an unrelated quote that applies to to this situation , for those unfamiliar here is it

"there are known knowns; there are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns; that is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know."

this article describes one thing going from known unknown to known known,

How many other known unknowns are there ?

which proportion are positive feedback and which negative ?

as always with climate science it is a developing science which makes it a risky business making definitive statements and as climate is a complex system reducing these complexities to soundbites also leads to trouble and much bollocks.

I , for one, am convinced of one thing, climate is changing, as to the rest more info and analysis needed

JESUS battery HEALS itself - might make electric cars more practical

James 36

Re: Off-topic: Electric cars?!?

here is some gov info that may help

http://assets.dft.gov.uk/statistics/series/energy-and-environment/climatechangefactsheets.pdf

after power gen transport is the next biggest target, though when you drill into it domestic transport accounts for 20% of CO2 and of that cars and taxis are 58% of the 20% so 11.6 % overall.

If all cars were electric that 11.6% would be reduced providing an easyish way of reducing CO2 according to UK gov though without investing in power gen it will not work anyway.

Re: Lifestyle choice

" If you can't cope with bringing up a family and bringing enough money in to do so properly, then don't have children."

this comment ranks as one of the stupidest comments I have read,

because of course you can predict the future and your ability to cope with a situation of which you have little or no knowledge,

how do you know until you do it ?

it isn't all about the money either, there are good and bad parents from all economic backgrounds

James 36

Blah

I always find the phrase "overlooked for promotion" to be slightly odd.

First off that implies the control of the situation was not yours or some external factor was at play to deny you the promotion you deserved. Is this really the case ?

Did you do everything you could to get the promotion or did you just work hard and expect it ?

If you think getting a promotion in the organisation you are in involves doing things outside of your boundaries then try the job market

If you feel you aren't being valued where you are then try the job market.

If nothing happens maybe you have found your level so be happy with that, or keep trying the job market whilst balancing your job/home life.

or just ignore all of the above as it is only my opinion and based on my narrow experience of the UK IT job market. The author is American and things are almost certainly different there.

A war on terror is like trying to nail jelly to a wall, the only way to reduce terror is to improve the lives of the people from where the terrorists recruit.

kill someone's relative they become easy picking for terror groups (or governments or criminals or ...etc) for vengeful acts of violence , educate them and improve their lives they will be harder to convince of the justification for "righteous slaughter" and also , hopefully , more critical of the arguments presented to persuade.

Intelligence gathering is still needed, I do not think spying on everyone is a good thing or justified.

risk

So there is a risk that a mobile phone or other device could interfere with the safe landing or take off of a plane.

Given that a percentage of the sample doesn't switch off their phone or other device and that there are very few instances of aircraft having incidents as a result of passengers electronic devices can the risk not be assessed ?

impact - high crashing plane kills people

probability - low based on my scanning of the comments so please feel free to disagree

mitigation - ask all passengers to switch of said electronic devices knowing that some will comply and some won't

the mitigation chosen seems a reasonable compromise , I don't understand why everyone is getting so upset, surely the fact that some people cannot do without their phone or the possibility of not being contactable is more more upsetting ? well it is to me anyway.

Google's teeny UK tax bill 'just not right', thunders senior MP

Politicians moaning about corporations tax behaviour winds me up. Comments like this

"Instead companies like Google are creating artificial structures and abusing current tax legislation to move profits offshore in order to avoid tax. That is just not right, and people like Eric Schmidt need to understand the legitimate public outrage that behaviour generates.”

piss me off as the only people who can change this are the politicians. So Ms Hodge is you don't want corporations behaving this way change the tax code and stop whinging about ethical behaviour which is just a crap way of trying to guilt a corporation into changing and trying to swap responsibility from the politican to the corporation.
