Adblock Plus blocked from attending ad industry talkfest

Re: Keep on with the autoplaying auto-expanding video, sound, and light-show free-for-all

I encountered a tech site about a fortnight ago, it possibly had a solution for a problem I was trying to solve. It picked up I had adblock, and with no warning asking me to disable adblock banned our IP (so no one else at work could access the site without getting the same banned because you have adblock message)

This is the site: http://wsdlbrowser.com/

And their banned message http://wsdlbrowser.com/banned-by-adblock

Microsoft capitulates, announces German data centres

Raphael

Re: How is this different?

As the article says:

"The German operator's T-Systems subsidiary will handle the data trustee functions, managing all access to customer data in the Microsoft data centres. “Microsoft will not be able to access this data without the permission of customers or the data trustee, and if permission is granted by the data trustee, will only do so under its supervision”, the announcement states.

Since Microsoft won't be in charge of the data, even an unfavourable decision in its US court case (in which the Feds want access to e-mails stored in Ireland) won't expose German customer data to American courts or law enforcement."

Now personally I don't like Apple *hrrawk ptui* very much (I don't own any of their hardware and refuse to even consider buying some)

But given they had their biggest launch (13 million units in 3 days) I don't think we can call it a legacy device.

"Your figures presume zero capacity left in the batteries of cars that use the facility."

If the batteries have any charge left in them, it would probably be a good idea for the facility to do a discharge first as batteries still don't like constantly being charged from partly empty. Which means your cycling will probably take longer for a battery that isn't completely discharged.

Android engineer: We didn't copy Apple or follow Samsung's orders

Raphael

People estimating dollar values have a nasty habit of assuming if you didn't buy their product you would have bought mine.

The problem is I could have just as easily bought someone-elses product.

For example I am one of the few weird people who was happy with my WinMo2003SE to WinMo 6.1 phones....I only moved to Android after the WinPho7 cock-up....for me Apple was never an option worth considering.

The fact that I went with a Samsung Galaxy S was because it was better than the offerings that Sony Ericsson and HTC had at the time, likewise with my S3.

And now when my contract is coming up for renewal again, I'm looking to decide if I want the HTCOne, the S5 or if I'm willing put up with WinPho8 for one of those awesome cameras the Nokia engineers managed to squeeze into the Lumia 1020.

Re: Romans? Not likely...

No, the Romans probably did record the Hatepe Eruption of Taupo in 186AD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatepe_eruption

"The Taupo eruption was at one time dated to approximately 130 AD based on 14C from carbonized vegetation enclosed in the eruption products. However, the 22 selected samples used to obtain an average date of 1,819 ± 17 years BP (131) had much larger standard deviations than the average date itself.[3] Most if not all geologists now accept that the tephra or pumice fall from the eruption was far greater than previously thought, approximately 150 km3 (36 cu mi) instead of 14 km3 (3.4 cu mi). This means the event would have been visible from China and Rome. It was therefore posited by Wilson et al. (and is now generally accepted) that the meteorological phenomena described by Fan Ye in China and by Herodian in Rome[6] were due to this eruption, which therefore can be dated exactly to 186 AD.[7] However, recent radiocarbon dating by R. Sparks has put the date at 233 AD ± 13 (95% confidence).[8][9]"

Re: Theories about why this is happening

Meh, we took the kids down to Whakapapa Ski Field (on Raupehu) this winter a week after Tongariro erupted earlier this year. Apart from a bit of ash on the one road, and signs saying "no stopping due to volcanic activity" it was fine.

Of course the folk out Nelson way dealing with heavier ash raining down on their gardens didn't agree.

But that eruption was a small short one.

Anonymous attacks Israeli websites over Gaza bombings

Raphael

Re: Must watch more news

no more like they got pissed off with Hamas firing hundreds of rockets at their civilians in the past couple of weeks.

1.) Israel got out of Gaza in 2005....who was the US President then? oh right Bush.

2.) Ahmed Jabari got what he damn well deserved

3.) it's simple, you want Israel to stop attacking you? Stop attacking their civilians.

In Sderot civilians have 15 seconds from the IDF radar picking up Hamas rockets and sounding a warning before the rockets hit. In the week befor eIsreal took out Jabari they had fired over a hundred into Sderot.

According to this article, yes.

" Soon after he placed the order he said he received an email saying some of the goods had been shipped, and then other emails to confirm the order had been processed and his credit card charged.

'Two or three days later they came back and said the order's been cancelled because there was a problem with the price.'

They told him they would honour the part of the order they had already shipped, but later managed to intercept the courier package. "

Microsoft unveils fondle-ready keyboards, mice

Raphael

Re: Looks like a nice enough keyboard

depends on the power usage of the keyboard.

I've been using a Logitech keyboard for over a year, and still on the original batteries which are still sitting at over 50%. (Logitech also a solar powered keyboard which doesn't need to have the users replacing batteries ...never used it so can't comment).

I must admit though that my wife's Microsoft mouse goes through batteries a heck of a lot faster than my Logitech mouse does.

BOFH: The back-up backdown smackdown

Raphael

Re: Users and their backups...

I take it you never used any old PDA's?

Windows Mobile devices all they way up to 6.5 used to do that. if you let the back-up battery go flat it would reset to factory defaults. (some had a place to store a back-up of your contacts so it could restore them after the reset).

And Windows 7 is definitely not all that finger friendly in comparison.

You have to use the stylus a fair amount, rather than your fingers (which was always the old complaint about WinMo.....I miss my old WinMo phones but Android easier to use as you don't have to muck about with a stylus.)

(that being said the slate is an impressive little machine and we will be putting Win8 on one at a later stage)
