Apple iPad 3 packs LAPTOP battery

Re: iPad 3?

is it a wind up? When people ask me which iPad I have, I shall answer with iPad 3?

tommy060289

Re: Overnight charge only?

Apparently So. One of the UK tech magazines was quoting about 6 hours (or 12 from a computer USB!)

Too be honest Im surprised in some ways that Apple didn't up the charger to a 20W output, but then again maybe they didn't want to have multiple different, seemingly the same, chargers on the market confusing buyers!

New iPads to hit Apple stores on Friday

tommy060289
Megaphone

Can anyone spell durrrr?

It was quite obvious. Apple was hardly going to send them all out to online orders and have none of the fuss at the stores (bring with it all the people queuing and drawing attention as well as highlighting all those shiny accessories!)

I know the iPhone 4s last October was released on Friday and didn't sell out till Saturday afternoon and surely the demand for iPhone is substantially greater than iPad? This was in the Sheffield Meadowhall store so don't know how it compared to the rest of the UK but I'd expect (in the north at least) it was similar

I'm thinking of going Friday afternoon after work and picking one up. I can't imagine I'll have much trouble getting one (especially since I want one of the 'less desireable' 4G 64gb models) and as a bonus I won't have to stand in line like a tard!

It was crap anyway!

I was with aviva last year and its online was terrible. Would freqently bug out when doing changes to policy and when i logged in it would say system error - try again later, and then id click back and i would be magically logged in!

They should take a look at swift covers if they want to learn how to do online, all changes are easy and it works nicely!

Happy

Ive played and really like the lumia and WP7

Unfortunately, I'm likely to continue only 'liking' it as I walk into an Apple store late next year to purchase an iPhone 5.

I doesn't really give me much reason to switch and the iPhones ability to simply plug in and my new phone will be updated with all the details from my 3GS means it really isn't worth the hassle of switching to a different eco-system

WTF?

Amazon knows everything?

Well fuck me, you learn something new every day. All amazon is look at what you've looked at and mindlessly spam similar products to you! A bit like going into a restaurant, deciding you can get a better meal else wear but they still send you menu suggestions every week. Even though you have had your dinner!

I still get suggestions for AS/A2 physics revision books, a subject I finished 5 years ago...

UK biz: Fax us and explain what this cloud thing is

tommy060289
Stop

Can someone explain to me what's better about

Putting a file in a scanner. Waiting for it to scan to pdf and then attaching it to an email to send it rather than putting a document in a fax machine and typing a number in...

I'm not a business but I have an all in one scanner/printer/fax and find the fax part exceedingly useful. For example I recently sent my proof of no claims to my new insurance and was much easier to put in fax number and let it scan than switching computer on, waiting for it to scan, open it to make sure it's scanned ok and then sending an email!

I appreciate you can direct email from a scanner but most don't have keyboards so your left typing an email on a directional pad that takes far longer than typing in an 11 digit phone number.

Obviously having a digital document copy on a computer but that's not needed every time.

I'm not saying fax is the be all and end all but it is still a very useful tool that complements email rather than replaces it!

Nokia dips toe in free Wi-Fi waters, again

tommy060289
Thumb Up

Totally agree

So annoying to go use Internet on my iPhone only to find its not working and then notice its because it's joined a silly wifi network like BT open zone where I have to launch safari I get the log in screen to appear!

I just want to check twitter!!!

tommy060289

It's a shame Nokia has to take responsibility...

On a recent trip to the states on holiday in Florida, I could barely move for tripping over free wifi. Shopping malls, hotels, Orlando international airport, restaurants, coffee shops. It was never hard to find free wifi. I'd say 95% of places I went it was free of charge! And it certainly helped avoid nasty roaming charges!

Meanwhile, back in rip off blighty anywhere we go just about with the exception of $tarbucks we're expected to pay for what is becoming to people, no more a standard service than providing toilets and water fountains!

No I'm not some freetard who doesn't want to pay for anything but to say how capatilist America is, they quickly cottoned on that people will stay places and use your services if you provide them to means to check faceache or check prices in shopping malls! And with unlimited data becoming a thing of the past, wifi is certainly a helpful option!

Windows 7 overtakes XP - finally

tommy060289
Thumb Up

Deservedly so....

I'm a mac os x user but I have 7 running on bootcamp and it's nice to see MS go back and properly rebuild the os from the ground up and build it properly. I much prefer it to the copy of XP that I run on the MBP (and like les said the twelve million upgrades!) and certainly better than the abomination and paint it shiny shit coat that was vista! I still prefer os x, but if apple exploded tomorrow, it wouldn't be the horrible walk through hell to switch back that it used to be.

Now if only ms would admit that you can't just chop down an operating (7 starter) and bung it on to low spec machine and hoping it's good enough to run and just write a proper os for netbooks they'd be on to a winner!

AT&T asks Apple to signal iPhone 4S is a 4G phone

tommy060289
WTF?

isn't the gap between 3g and 4g a bit much for one generation....

to be 3G compatible a device must be capable of 200Kb/s (though admittedly I seem to get around 2-2.5mb/s) but then to be 4G it needs to go up to 1GB/s.

Now is it just me or is that a phenomenal increase. 1GB/s is far greater than any wired BB around so surely something that should be considered 5g or even 6g! LTE would be more than enough to be considered 4G in my book!

Sony: all new PS3 titles will require PSN Pass for online play

Its getting to a point where we are not allowed to own anything:(

Your now buying products where you are not free to do as you like with. You've purchased the product you should be allowed to send it on if you like. IT YOURS. With things like this you can sell it on but its not the product you bought therefore drastically devaluing it to another person.

Its one of the reasons I still buy Albums on CD and don't download games on demand. Singles and cheap iPhone games are one thing but when your buying full price games and album, why shouldn't you be able to sell them on?

Joke

clearly what is needed is...

for El Reg to classify a standard Unit of measurement for effort, I suspect I may already have a formula. Since power is the RATE at which WORK IS DONE, we can simply measure it in Watts.

However, as it appears that certain industries require their people to give more than others, what is clearly needed is a compliance factor which will be inversely proportional so that our measurement of effort works across all borders. So for example, if a footballer was expected to put in twice as much work per hour as a trolley dolly down the local supermarket, then footballers compliance factor would be '1' and the Trolley Dolly's would be '2'.

Therefore, our formula of:

Effort = compliance factor * Power

then the work done by the Trolley Dolly in an hour should be half that of the football to achieve the same 'effort' rating, as this is what is expected of them.

Now all we we need a unit for our measurement, may I suggest the BS

but if you give that

Jobs Halo

I use an iPad at university

The truth is, net books are crap, slow and underpowered and over filled with Crapware Laptops, I never seen one that copes even reasonably with basic tasks, their small screens also prove a pain when they are trying to render larger pages.

On the other hand, I have a decent laptop for serious work and I take my iPad round with me at university as it is much easier to carry round then any laptop, can be whipped out in a lecture and will allow me to bring up presentiations or material that complements whist I looking at at the time.

It's problem has been that it's an accessory so I'd advise any student if they are starting out with nothing, get a proper laptop (DEFINETLY not a netbook) and until recently the iPad has probably proved a bit too expensive an accessory to be had (I'm part time so get the joy of having a proper job to help with my studies:) ) but the recent cut to £329 for the iPad may make it an ideal portable partner for students, much better than any crappy netbook (which unless you have dwarf hands went much better for typing either - although I do cope very well my iPad On screen keyboard providing its just letters and numbers and basic symbols) and much more portable than a full size laptop!

Facebook lets users report friends who post suicidal content

tommy060289

you make no sense

Youve clearly stated that you no longer want to top yourself, therefor you must be admitting that it would have been a mistake to kill yourself therefore, your friends, like any good friends were trying to stop you making the WRONG decision.

Im not saying people cant make that decision, and some people simply cant go on (I for one support voluntary Euthanasia) but some people simply get themselves (like you did) into a hole where they wrongfully believe it is the only option. As NIWFYC pointed out, interference may be just what some people need but what do you want your friends to do? Set up a government run panel where they debate the merits ands cons of stepping in, making a long winded bureaucratic case that winds on for many years whilst you await the income to see if they should interfere or not before you attempt it.

My mother is a nurse and has seen many person during her time that have started a suicide attempt (O/D's for example) only to realise it was a mistake, but it is too late and they are going to die.

Im not saying people shouldn't be allowed the choice, but you must consider that you friends and family and others may simply know better (and conversely be stupid morons who dont have a clue!)

[\getoffsoapbox]

tommy060289
WTF?

So some friends didn't want you to kill yourself...

And their the ones in the wrong? I'm assuming since you Havnt tried to kill yourself again it's because you don't regret failing so if you had have succeeded and could some how reflect you would see it was the wrong decision? I'm sorry but how is friends trying to help you out of a bad hole the wrong thing to do?

iPad 2: Apple forced to make carrier concessions

tommy060289
WTF?

Anyone who thinks there is any threat to iPad atm

Is living in absolute dream world. The iPad feels like a refined finished product whilst the doom is virtually regarded as a prototype released just to give some competition. The killer blow, who do they think is going to pay for the xoom when you can have THE tablet computer for less.

Also, it is very much clutching at straws to suggest 4G is the killer feature. It currently only covers about 2 cities in the US doesn't it? And we dont even have good 3g coverage in the uk, never mind 4g. The end result is apple hasvages before it needs to take 4g seriously.

On a final note. Didnt someone make the point you could use up the mobile usage allowance in little over 30 minutes. Mobile operators certainly have a long way to go before 4g is a viable selling point!

Game offers pre-orders on pre-owned titles

tommy060289

on another note

why do people bum play so much. I used to buy loads off there when they were newer (and yes their service is second to none) BUT, since they have become mainstream they really arn't that cheap in internet terms anymore.

Yes sometimes they do have good offers and sometimes they are one of the cheapest but it worries me that theyve become the default place to get a bargain, similar to what ebay used to be considered (which again isnt as cheap as people think).

For many a game I can usually find a good £5 cheaper than play.com just by going on one of the price comparison sites such as www.find-games.co.uk

tommy060289
FAIL

Retarded much....

It's not really a £16 saving as I can't remember the last time the last time i saw a game priced at £50 even game and game station only price £45 max, plenty at £40 and if you are doing it online then that means your using the Internet and you can always get the latest releases brand new for an absolute max of £35 new, usually less which would be. Cheaper than second hand, especially if its an ea game with the online pass!

I'm not normally one for privacy concerns

But surely this is taking things to far as to regards to looking at everyone who has been on the website, I havnt been as I can't be bothered with things like this but im. Sure lots. Of people will. Watch just to see what is being done. It's like saying a group of people in a town have committed crime so we must get the identities of everyone who lives in that town and also the identities of those who have visited is past by.

I do own a ps3 but I have one game that I never play and occasionally use it for blu-ray but if were all honest the xbox is a far superior console. Perhaps sony should spend less time on making lawsuits and more time making better products. I seriously doubt I will. Buy anymore Sony products after this.

Ofcom demands ISPs close 'upto' gap

tommy060289
IT Angle

In other news...

We can confirm that a bear, DOES in fact shit in the woods.

I dont know anyone who doesn't know that they won't get the speed they quoted (and most people couldn't quantify the speed anyway! Beyond how fast they can buffer redtube, errr I mean YouTube anyway)

Perhaps the response should be that the ISPs dont have to change there advertising so they can still claim they their pie in the sky quotas but we will agree to pay 'up to' x amount and when they fail to deliver, so shall we:D maybe then they will concentrate on improving their quality of service rather than just trying to fob everyone off on excuses whilst installing fibre cables for absolutely no one I know!
