UK sitting on top of at least 50 years of shale gas – report

Potemkine Silver badge
Alert

Wait and see

Before starting to exploit shale gas in Europe, we should wait for at least 5 years. Why? To analyze the consequences of such exploitation on the environment. The US are a gigantic experiments lab, and there are already troubling signs coming: for instance, contamination of underground water with methane at short distance of wells is averred in Pennsylvania. So before polluting drinking water, we should think twice. Once we will have messed up it, it will be very hard to go backward.

Re: Corporation tax seems silly.

First, all the money is not eventually distributed, next taxation is not the the same for a shareholder or an employee. In the first case, if your fiscal adviser is smart enough, you could even be able to pay a smaller tax ratio on your dividends than the employee with the smaller salary of the company. That's what fundations in Lichtenstein are made for, for instance.

But who cares for fiscal justice anyway? Riches get richer, poors get poorer, it's the rule of our time.

There is indeed a specific violence and hatred towards women. It's logical then there is a group 'specializing' fighting that specific violence. It does not mean this group endorses other kind of hatred.

Her true legacy

Her legacy is the crisis we face today. Like all the ideologies of the XXth century, her ideology led to disaster and suffering. Deregulation and developing outrageously the finance sector led to the subprimes and housing crisis, which degenerated in the debt crisis, countries having be obliged to take the debt of the banks for themselves to avoid the collapse of these 'to big to fail'.

MS strategy is counter-productive for us, a SMB. It doesn't feed our needs, users are lost between versions, and it's more and more expensive. MS pushes us more and more to get rid of MS-Office, and look at alternative solutions. The next update regarding Office could well be a migration.

Boeing 787 fleet grounded indefinitely as investigators stumped

Potemkine Silver badge
Mushroom

B787's technologies are Marketing's choices, not engineers ones

The technological choices Boeing took for the 787 were made by the Marketing Department, not by the technical engineers. Best proof is the use of composite materials, touted like marvels that would lead to a lighter aircraft. Marketing department just forgot that aluminium has not only a mechanical function but electrical functions too, making the plane a Faraday cage and providing electrical grounding. The result is engineers had to add a lot of metal to the carbon-based composites, making the 787 between 6 to 11 tons too heavy compared to expectations (cf for instance http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2012-08-09/news/33118779_1_b-787s-air-india-250-seater-aircraft). Nonetheless, Boeing' marketing dept. continues to claim 787 is lighter because of the use of composite materials.... BS.

The question is where the limit must be, and not if there must be a limit.

For instance, calling to hurt or to murder someone cannot be covered by free speech.

Any freedom has a limit defined by the law, because the Individual lives in a society and his/her freedom is

limited by the others' freedom. It is fair when the law is voted by the People or People's representative democratically elected.

Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, article 11. : The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom, but shall be responsible for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by law.

Actually, being rich by itself is immoral, and the Gospels are clear on that:

Matthew 19:24: "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Mark 10:25: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Re: NK is evil

Yeah, for sure, after talking with them NK rulers will suddenly realize what they do is wrong, and will become good guys.... like Chamberlain changed Hitler's mind... not.

There's a lesson of History: Appeasement doesn't work.

Making business with dictatorships doesn't help human rights either, it just gives more money to the wards so they can continue to oppress their people: see Ford or IBM during WW2, or any company making business with China: the result is the dictatorship becoming stronger and more efficient - and also money in the pocket for the ones who doesn't mind to exchange human rights for gold.

Potemkine Silver badge
Flame

NK is evil

NK is a stalinian country oppressing its own people, with concentration camps similar to Dachau or Buchenwald, cf http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57556456/horrors-revealed-at-north-korean-prison-camp/

Making business with NK is being accomplice of the regime and the crimes it commits.

North Korea is a dictatorship the Stalinian way. The north korean camps are similar to Dachau or Buchenwald, with crimes committed there at a scale and a sadism even Dante could not dream of. Entire families are decimated, tortures, rapes, assassinations are routine.

Every company working with and for North Korea is accomplice of the crimes committed there. As we trial sexual predators there when they commit their crimes in a foreign country, the same should be made for the guys behind Nosotek.

Exchange? What's that?

Getting rid of exchange and its ecosystem was the best decision for us: too expensive, too complicated, too closed approach, too many compatibility issues, too many failures... switching to Google Apps one year ago was the best decision for a SME like ours with limited resources for IT. For a cost a fraction of the previous cost, now all of our users have access to a lot of services whose usage boosts our productivity through the GUI they want: outlook, thunderbird (+plugins), their favorite browser. The openness of Google APIs is a plus for customization. Also, as a side effect, this move enabled also to get rid of our Blackberry fleet and the associated BES server, and let users choose either IOs or Android devices.
