Do not adjust your set: Hats off to Apple, you struggle to shift iPhones 'cos you're oddly ethical

data is all that matters ..

There is only one thing that really matters - my data ! Is it secure, can I export it and transfer to another platform easily>

Any platform that does not keep my data secure and give me total control and ownership of it is basically obsolete and only for fools!

At the end of the day bevels on phones , or bells and whistles, or OS updates are just window dressing. And what is best one year can fall behind the next !.

What matters is how compatible is the ecosystem with other platforms. And how independent , compatible and tranferable is my data This is increasingly the MOST important and only issue to me !

GIMP masks font downloads, adds horizon fix in new build

I sometimes wonder if it is me or gimp that has got better !

But though it frustrated me when I first used it GIMP is now excellent ! Paired with darktable running on Ubuntu studio it is easy and fast to work with !

Its a little slower and clunkier on windows but still.pretty good

I use it with KDENLIVE for videowork - and my workflow has never been simpler or faster and the cost is zilch

Gimp gets my love!

Europe dumps 300,000 UK-owned .EU domains into the Brexit bin

I'm not sure why this is news. Europes rules have always been clear on this. Nothing is changing except our status of no longer being an EU member It may be possible to negotiate for continued access to those domains - but clearly our Brexit negotiators have done nothing about that yet. Endless internal wrangling and in fighting and delay in the government, while at the same time insisting on a hard fast Brexit without extended transition - means there are shedloads of places where we wil lose our privileges by default. The EU could change there rules to include us with Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway who can access EU domains - but we have to ask for it first.. And of course, the pugilistic language of much Brexit discourse will mean the EU won't want to give anything away outside of the negotiations. It will put its own members first. As we take back our own sovereignty we have to act as a sovereign nation and negotiate with the EU - not just expect to be spoon fed if we cry enough anymore!

Google Drive stalls on LAUNCH DAY

Re: Drive not ready

Well I got logged in right away..- a few other people seem to have had to wait a few hours - much less than the wait for apple updates when a new one is announced and the phones stuck in semi- upgrades - and it seems better managed with a nice message asking you to wait and a very prompt notice to say when you can access -

Google have had a few flops recently (wave, and to some extent plus) but this definitely ISN'T one of them

Its got more free space than Dropbox - and is much more cheaply expandable than the competition (for those of us who don't want to spam our friends for freespace by referals (I hate it when peoplel do that to me!!)

It syncs like dropbox and integrates nicely with google docs! It meets the competition head on as it is right now AND google say they have more improvement on the way

Well done google on this !

YOu hit the spot

Who will rid me of these obsolete PCs?

Freecycle or Freegle

Put them on Freecycle if in US (or in the UK you'll probably do better with FREEGLE - find you local group here http://www.ilovefreegle.org/groups/

UK has Freecycle too but Freegle usually seems to have more of the community support needed for this sort of distribution in the UK and larger more active groups.

For example my local freegle group in a smallish town would e-mail your offer to over 12,000 subscriber members in the local area - there are several public spirited members on our group who will even take all the computers - refurbish or improve them - install linux etc - and re-offer as a community minded retiremetn hobby. Your own local group wil have similar.

Remember following this route

1) You are giving stuff away to strangers so no rules for the bean counters

2) The items are being offered for reuse - so are not "waste" - however you should be careful not to try to pass of waste as re-usables or you will be in trouble.
