Intel swallows McAfee: Why?

James Le Cuirot

CrapAfee

I'm dismayed that Intel would even want to associate with CrapAfee. I'm not a Windows user but wherever I have seen their piss poor software in action, it practically grinds the machine to a halt. They were the number one reason why my Mum ditched her perfectly good laptop for another one. I took it off her hands but she wondered why I could possibly want it, seeing as it was all but unusable. It literally took 15 minutes to boot up before it would let you actually do anything and from there, it was still painful. Before giving it a new lease of life (Linux), I wanted to see whether simply removing CrapAfee would fix the problem. Well, whaddya know...

Stop drinking piss

It really annoys me to see everyone drinking the same old fizzy piss. I take delight in always trying ales I haven't seen before and there are plenty around. Of all the ones I've ever tried, there was only one I didn't really like.

MySQLers mixed on Ellison's ownership

James Le Cuirot

I didn't wait

I switched to Postgres almost immediately but that was more because I needed PostGIS due to MySQL's woeful GIS support. If I'd known what Postgres was like beforehand though, I would have switched much earlier.

Ssh!

I admit that it works very well under Wine but I'd rather have a native client any day! Don't go around saying things like that or we might not get native clients for things in future.

MythTV

I want to know if MythTV will be able to fit into this picture. For many people, it may actually make it redundant. I'm undecided.

Gentoo Linux

Any carbon I save by downloading free software is probably lost when I compile it all. Gentoo Linux, not the most environmentally friendly distro!

Blur vs Split Second Velocity

James Le Cuirot

Surprised

I'm surprised because I briefly played both yesterday (Blur a little more) and I actually had much more fun with Blur. This was on multiplayer. Reading this, I think I need to try Split Second again because my friend only gave me a very quick explanation of how to play it. Blur reminded me of Rollcage, which I thought was cool.

TeamViewer on Linux

As a Linux user, I didn't want to like TeamViewer but it does work very well and runs perfectly under Wine, which is rare. I even prefer RDP over VNC actually because it's too true that the latter is clunky and slow. It's a shame you didn't mention more about the newer X-based stuff such as NX because I'd like to know more about that. X11 forwarding over SSH is amazing but painful over a slow connection.

Does it matter?

Most of the courses I applied for (admittedly this was 10 years ago) didn't even require Computing A-Level. I was accepted into Durham with Physics and Maths instead, knowing nothing more than a few dialects of BASIC, and I went on to gain a very strong grasp of Java in my first year there.

Apple building its own Flash, says rogue Tweeter

Bah

The sensible thing to do would have been to put more manpower behind the Gnash project. Even if they don't like the Flash IDE or ActionScript, they could have built their own tools and language around it the format.

MySQL daddy backs EU's Snoracle probe

James Le Cuirot

They've already lost me

I've already switched to PostgreSQL and haven't looked back. The switch had nothing to do with Oracle though. MySQL was really starting to do my head in and the countless number of PostgreSQL fanboys here convinced me to sample the greener grass. They were right.

US music publishers sue online lyrics sites

James Le Cuirot

@Eq

Actually I think you do need a license to display the covers because they are protected by copyright too. That's why MusicBrainz doesn't allow people to simply upload covers, you usually have to link them from Amazon or CD Baby. I can barely understand the logic behind that. As for the lyrics, that is just insane.

Well I am working from home for a company in London while actually living in Perth, Scotland. I consider myself very lucky. Especially when I get into the office before they do because I took the sleeper train. :D

Is Google spending $106.5m to open source a codec?

James Le Cuirot
Thumb Up

You guys should know On2

Funny, I almost asked whether they might open source it in the last article but I dismissed it as a stupid question. I couldn't think of any reason why they would. Now it makes sense.

I heard of On2 a while ago because it was their VP6 codec that was introduced in Flash 8. Since there was no Linux release of Flash 8, it drove Linux users crazy because there were a lot of videos that they couldn't play for a while.

FFMPEG has had VP6 decoding support for a long time now but an encoder has never materialised. Maybe that will change now.

I agree and I'm a professional web monkey. This certainly has gone too far, even for my tastes, and IE has been the bane of my life for years, but that's no reason to slate the Opera browser itself. It's my browser of choice and I'm proud to use it.

Google kicks Maestro into touch

James Le Cuirot

Maestro -> Visa

My HSBC debit card got damaged so I requested a new one. Instead of giving me another Maestro card, they gave me a Visa card, stating that they're making this move because it's more widely accepted. This is true but I didn't think Maestro was generally getting phased out? Seems like only yesterday that it replaced Switch.

I don't know much about Theora but if the quality isn't up to scratch now yet it has the potential to improve later, they could have at least gone with it anyway. No one said YouTube has to use HTML5. That would have avoided all this patent bollocks.

Re: Ethernet port

I'm not sure what the Ethernet port is for but given that my LG set has Bluetooth and a USB port for viewing photos and playing music, and also given that LG's sets run on Linux, it could be something quite interesting! My set also has an RS-232 serial port for external control.

I was quietly thinking literally just yesterday about whether the judge might have been bribed, given the amount of money behind this. I tried to dismiss it as an overly cynical view of the justice system. Good to know I was right, after all.
