BOFH: Do I smell burning toes, I mean burning toast?

Captain Scarlet

Re: decisions HAVE been made!

I feel your pain, except for us our nice big server room became a massive meeting room (New false floor over the old false floor for added laziness), the server room is now in what was our store room (Which because we lost our other store room this week has now become both a server and store room which I can't keep flammable materials in >_<).

Re: I've always considered Apple to give better value-for-money

I just have to look over my desk to find computers designed for Windows XP happily running Windows 7 Enterprise nearly 10 years old. Anyone can make any machine whether its Windows, Linux, iOS last years longer than the manufacturer would like (Probably would run notebook computers longer however replacing a battery on a machine with an asset value of £0 isnt going to happen).

Misco UK chops majority of workforce, pulls down shutters

Captain Scarlet

Yeah search Tier1online (Other such refurbishers who include a years warranty also available).

They had a more recent company starting with green but I can't remember its name.

Captain Scarlet

If you can remember the make they tended to order direct for items like that (Actually includes a lot of items like Lindy items, HP Parts). The past few years I would say under half our orders actually came from a Systemax warehouse.

Captain Scarlet
Facepalm

Like any other such company?? (Looking at you inmac, Micro Warehouse, BT Business, ...)

What the fdisk? Storage Spaces Direct just vanished from Windows Server in version 1709

Re: Pay for? Or severe bugs?

Considering some of the horrendous databases people have designed in MS Access its no wonder they any data at all. Its still far too easy to corrupt Access files (Just kill the process off in the middle of any query and normally ends up with corrupt vba).

They are perfectly fine as front ends with a database behind it, just make sure there is a safe copy somewhere, its one user per copy, all data is in a external database, its compiled as a runtime and nothing in it makes takes to long to run (As people are impatient and will kill off anything running longer than a minute).

BlackBerry Motion lurches into UK stores

Captain Scarlet

Only problem though is I have a Dtek and although it receives security updates it appears it won't ever receive a new version of the Android OS. Probably not that big of a deal but just seems to me the usual if it flops its immediatly slapped on life support. The Blackberry brand appears to be poison as users would prefer to have cheaper android models or idevices instead

Blast it

Well I for one much prefer Misco to other resellers, yes they cost more but our account managers have always helped us out and dealt with any issues we have (Which includes me ordering wrong items).

There is very little they couldn't get ordered for us where as other suppliers have refused to even look to see if they could get items not on their books.

Captain Scarlet

Re: Oh Joy?

"What about ordinary Joe Soap who spent thousands for some agency to build their WordPress site and the agency don't do updates because it costs them time that they can't charge the customer?"

We require to host all our sites (Then we know what sites are there, domains are used, etc.. obviously until they can't be bothered and slap their domain on a crap web host, when we find out they wonder why we are fuming they paid stupid amounts of money on a website noone has control over and the domain isnt even officially owned by the company). We will request the agency then keeps the site up to date whilst we host this (Making Marketing aware they are paying the agency for it), if they fail to do so demand a login and do it ourselves (Ensuring time is logged and cross charged to Marketing), when the marketing agency need to do work, take a backup of the database and files and supply it to them.

So far I am only happy with one agency used, as they actually do apply updates faster than we are able to.

There's a way to dodge Fasthosts' up-to-160% domain renewal hike but you're not gonna like it

Re: 123reg getting greedy

Probably because most people just leave auto-renew on (Oh wait so do I, but I use Enom because I am to lazy to go elsewhere.).

I expect they are trying to get a cash injection with people renewing for longer as I don't remember Nominet or Verisign being that high (CentralNic however were mind boggling).

I wonder what their actual biggest or highest priority is, because I assume its making money. At this point I will give TalkTalk a plus star (1 out of 10) for saying biggest security priority and not lying by saying it was their biggest priority.

W10 spying

My W10 machine has all the privacy stuff on, yet my phone knows where I have been (As I find the traffic updates to be very useful) and probably slurps 10x more information about me.

I don't think I can lay into MS in regards data slurping (Who the hell wants to know I watch Youtube and play Dota2), most times its annoying when updates start asking questions as often relatives will do what I tell them to and query it (Just fecking update damnit).
