This may be a naive question, I (Small UK company) host multiple domains for UK clients on my servers based in the US (cheaper bandwidth etc)
Do I have any legal obligation to keep a copy of all these emails (I do not at the moment and have no plans to do so in the fuure) in case Mr Plod knock on my door and ask for copies of email sent / received through my servers?? & what will they do when I say "Sorry I forgot to set this up"
A fair few of my clients quite like the idea of only having local copies under their control and not accessible by Jacquie's mob at the drop of a hat.
Again probably a dumb question - but as all email traffic is sent /received via my server & not magacorp ISP crappy mailserver then the ISP shouldn't be copying/sniffing everything/anything running over port 25/110 should they ? or am I being incredibly naive here ?
This has been bugging me for a while

Yuk - huge (opps sorry .... EPIC) fail
dodgy flash based "corp" type thing - fires up on screen "free tanning session" - then lots of uv rays can kill you rant and lots of pics of ppl with growths and stuff.
FFS we are geeks - most of us have never seen the sun
thats just gone right into my blacklist of acceptable domains at work
20mb Virgin
2.0 to 2.6Mb download via newshosting (newsgroups)
4.5gb in rougly 20 mins everything queued for past midnight so the rest of the family can knock themselves out on iplayer / msn / facebook & even if the cap kicks in Im so fast asleep I dont notice. All my TV progs/ demo's / patches / pr0n / whatever are waiting for me to peruse at my lesuire
cant see what all the fuss is about - My connection does exactly what is says on the tin.
PC world is dead handy when you need something in a real hurry (network card / router / usb to cat5 conector etc) & they will price match if ask (web on my e90 comes in handy sometimes)
it could be worse - sometimes I have to go into maplins - now THERE is a bunch of toosers who need to kneel in front of a wall and be shot (in my town anywhere)
As for dixons - the sooner they go the better
Instead of sd cards why not have a USB drive that you can load say 2 to 10 gb of mp3's do some electronic wizardry so you can plug some headphones into it and listen direct??
THEN when your bored of those songs you put your music player into a spare USB slot to recharge the player and swap songs out from your extensive (legal of course) downloaded collection
I think I may patent that idea - its bound to be cheap & easy and not look like an ipuke
What a crappy idea for a player and a crappy price for an album
there are people who actually want a card with gaypal on it ?? who do not know how messed up and gaypal are? and do not know what a bunch of robbing bas*ards the are ?
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING ?? please go remove yourselves from the gene pool immediately
Thank you
Even paris wouldnt sign up for this
Or does thing also download other malware variants ??
Been seeing a lot of these coming through the workshop in the last week or so and by all accounts its an absolute pig to remove completely. The lads have said they need to use at least 3 tools to nuke it and other random crap that seems to be getting downloaded. One bloke claims he got infected via a spam email and had not been surfing at all that day.
Oh and well written article.
Thanks
Kev
and all other sysadmins out there
Boo to the t0sser who had me out of bed this morning for what I shall politely call an error between the chair and keyboard & without a word of apology when the “error” was pointed out. (also who’s mobile no is now in my list of do not answer outside of my work hours)
I LURRRRVE my XT but do have "big boned" fingers so am looking forward to this & the bigger ssd drive will mean I have to carry less USB sticks about (vista/office/CS3 = almost no space).
This is the only machine I have that actually runs Vista decently & is probably the lowest spec laptop in the place
You would have thought though that a company the size of Dell would have a better Vid release that this though – does look a bit icky
I just whacked it on a clean install (inc sp2) on a old semparon 2200+ with 256mb ram (too lazy to dig out any more) and AVG for a machine for a mate of a mate who wants to do some *web* browsing and it runs fine (MUCH to my supprise) - it does seem to run noticbly faster than a machine with sp2 on it.
Not sure if I want to put it on any production machines just yet though
this has made my day.
Now quit whinging and pour the R&D funds into solar/wind/wave and shoot anyone who says that a shed load of 400 foot propellers are messing up their nice rual view.
Fscking hippies - Boris for UK President & Paris as his Mrs cos she would happily shoot a few hipies
As a smoker I KNOW its bad for my health - I am an adult and its my choice, same as you joggers who die from heart attacks and the guys who drink too much (possibly guilty of that too).
If the Govt were that concerned with our health they would ban the sale and importation of fags, but then there would be the small point of our taxes creating a HUGE gap in NHS funding and everything else they spend out tax money on.
I applaud the man and would love my firm to become big enough to be able to do the same thing
If you NEED your BB then get NTL Business, UK call centre, MUCH better support and a different system/network if you believe what they say - oh and its slower (1.5mb I think) as well as more expensive. I work from home but have made provision for the odd time it all goes titsup (access to next doors ADSL wifi - I set it up & kept a copy of the wpa key for "security" reasons <grin>.
You have to be retarded if you are reliant on a home network for WORK. Like people who use FarceHosts or some other budget host for their mission critical websites and then whinge that their £10 a month hosting has ruined their e-com service - redundancy and reliability - I thought that’s what IT professionals were supposed to sell their customers ??
Some of you people make me laugh & keep a roof over my head with your stupidity - thanks
NTL/Virgin have a pretty good uptime rate - like others have said when it goes wrong it goes titsup.com in a fairly major way - in the 12 odd years I have been with them they have been more reliable than BT or even Zen plus I can live with the caps as I just queue my big downloads for day time or early morning. Having to go to bed early once in a while is not such a bad thing ;)
Ohh and El reg finaly remembers who I am - Bonus
I regularly pull around 18.8mb / 2.3 MB a sec off newshosting.com newsgroup servers in europe with 8 concurrent conections - a full 4.7 MB DVD iso in 50MB chunks takes in the region of 30 to 33 mins - the same film ... errr - test object in xvid format ~760 mb in 15MB chunks takes in the region of 5 mins 30 secs.
That is not a speed I am going to complain about or realisticly get with an ADSL provider considering I am more than a stones throw from my nearest exchange (Zen and BeBroadband both said I would should expect next to bugger all as I live 7 miles from an exchange)
And all the people with cloned cable boxes and TV services - where I live 50 odd miles north of London, they have started shutting down the cable boxes & the guys who make/chip the TV Boxes recon they are for the crapper any time soon (my guess is new years eve so when you come home after a night on the sherbert no more free Pr0n - not that UK cable pr0n is even worth watching - we had to check it out for *cough* research reasons you understand)
Anon as I like my service
*disclaimer*
Any downloads were all done as part of research. Downloading TV eppisodes due to "Lets fsck up a bank next" Beardy Branson being able to agree with meglomaniac Murdoch supports lost at sea cannoists and Osama Bin Hiding. You shouldnt do it.
This post may contain traces of nuts and will only help with weight loss as part of a callorie controlled diet.
I love my 20mb speed
I get most of the TV epps I need from the newsgroups & am more than happy with the traffic management - I understand that an internet hog like me can max out my BB 24/7 and upset my next door neighbour looking at her face-bebo-my-book social networking thing - with 99% of ADSL services I would have been kicked off years ago for abuse - Every serious downloader I know uses VM and use the net for "normal" stuff during peak hours - while setting their d/l queue for past midnight - its not exactly rocket science is it ?? - fair play to VM for being sensible about the whole thing.
(More upload speed would be nice though)
This has got to be one of the more amusing comments read ever, for a bunch of tech savy readers I find a lot of the comments quite laughable.
in my not so humble opinion
A) The french courts are looking to jump on the current Hate M$ Bandwagon & get a slice of me too.
B) Unless you live under a rock - buying a bare bones PC or Lappy is not exactly akin to finding the holy grail - local PC store "dear person selling boxes to the public - I would like my pc to contain these items and no OS" - I can think of 3 stores in my home town (one of which I would & do actually use) and maybe 4 (off the top of my head) interweb stores I have used, all of which are happy to offer 2+ years RTB warrenty.
C) The great unwashed public at large are (mostly) incapable of correctly configuring a new pc - so god help 'em when it comes to installing an OS Windoze or *nix - the ones that can - normally do.
D) IF (and I cant see it anytime soon) the norm becomes selling PC's without OS's - I will be the first in line to go back into servicing the general public - with a per min 0870 support number & a team of experience @home techs - be like the late 80's/90's again when there was money to be made in selling/supporting home users.
E) As for Apples without preinstalled OS's - christ think of the floods from all the fanboys crying "My Apple just works - when someome who's not as hip and trendy looking as me charges me a fortune per hour to install my OS"
We had someone blatantly selling our products on ebay (aftermarket lotus elise upgrades and "bits") - even linking to photo's on our server - claiming to be reseller of our products (we only sell our products and don’t franchise) and offering the products at ~50% discount. Was pointed out to use via one of the Elise Forums (some people thought it was happy hour - even though we pointed out from hour one this was a scam) - emailed fleabay - nothing - tracked the guys down ourselves - spoke to them on the phone - emailed fleabay multiple times proving the products were ours/ that photos were hosted on our server / that the address on the fake account was mail drop.
Net result ?? were asked to fill out multiple forms and no help while the "Buy Now"s were left to run - in the end we set up multiple fake accounts and "brought" everything ourselves and with the help of others on the forums that had *cough* test *cough* accounts and changed all the relevant pictures on our server to .jpg informing people the auction was a scam.
The only people that were remotely interested in the whole episode were lloyds TSB who were the bank that users were offered as a way of paying by direct bank transfer. Our local plod and the plod from the region the scammers were from told us that as we were not directly affected as a company financially there was nothing they could or would do.
Then Fleabay had the gall to send us "how was your experience with our fraud protection team" type questionnaires - I wasn’t allowed by my boss to respond in an appropriate way
Fraud protection my skinny white arse - as long as they get listing / final value fee's they don’t give a flying recreational intercourse about their users
0845 numbers do not generate companies money as far as I am aware. I have one for my company it cost me £30 and I don’t make a penny out of it and wasn’t aware of anyone offering 0845's as a form of revenue stream.
We purchased it simply because it was guaranteed low cost call for anyone in the UK to call us (we have customers all over the UK).
Okay I guess if I’m honest we thought it would help the company look a bit bigger that we really are & when we move to bigger offices next year we can simply alter the location our 0845 redirects to without having to run the gamble on BT actually porting the correct number over to the new offices. Will look into seeing what we can blag off O2 to not move though. Changing everyone’s numbers or going through the hassle of porting to a different provider is such a pain in the rear end, I guess that’s what O2 are hoping everyone will think, when we changed from orange to O2 we spent 5 days with calls to our mobiles going into a black hole and that cost us way too much.
On the ebuyer page in question. I actually followed the link and checked before lighting up the neon sign on my head.
My understanding is the reason people buy OEM is that as a rule they are cheaper and GENERALY come with less warranty/no frills/no free games/cr@py or no packaging etc. Lets be honest if Product X and Product are basically the same and one is cheaper there is normally a reason and you need to be living in some kind of Paris Hilton world of fluffy pink clouds to think there is such a thing as a free lunch.
TBH this kind of thing p1sses me off "Boo Hoo!! I didn’t pay retail prices but expect retail service" pfft I wish these people stuck to buying from PC world.
Ebuyer should ban this bloke from buying anything from them ever again. Or employ that customer service bloke from the other day, Rufus I think he was called
The site description clearly states the product is OEM & clearly states the warranty is 5 years. I have never had a problem with ebuyer, on the very rare occasion I have had to return a product (one very cheap switch & one psu) they have been good as gold.
As a system builder (which I used to be) you should accept the fact that on occasion something will break & that you, as the builder & person who makes a profit on the system should fix it. Who gives a fig where the replacement comes from. If it is the brand you prefer and the same size or greater you say thank you very much and move on with life.
FFS some people get worked up over such small things, mind you as a system builder we had proper accounts with distributors, weren’t working out of our bedrooms and expected things to occasionally go wrong, its called the “that’s dealing with end (l)users factor”
