Island-hopping Beardy Branson: I'm dodging rain, not taxes

MrXavia

Re: So tell us Mr. Branson

I would live on my own PRIVATE TROPICAL ISLAND if I had the money!

Who wouldn't want to retire to their own island???

His businesses pay UK taxes, they employ UK resident workers..

His Airline is still the best British Airline to fly... and as much as people love to complain about virgin broadband, its better than shitty ADSL..

If you had built up more money than you could expect to spend in your lifetime, wouldn't you retire somewhere you loved?

I would much rather we have a monarchy than a president, I just wish the monarchs had a little more guts and stood up for their people more, but then again the queen is too old and needs replacing with her grandson soon! He has lived in the world I grew up in, he needs to be the new Monarch and soon! Why cant QE2 step down and let her grandson take up the reigns?

@Khaptain

Hey that is quite insulting.

Just because you do not believe in a deity, does not mean there isn't one.

People who swear to do their duty to one are not all lying.

And just because most of us Brits know creationism is a Myth, and Evolution is a proven theory does not mean those who do believe in the fallacy are bad people.

I myself do believe there is a higher power, some deity in some form, who or what they are I am not arrogant enough to think I know.

Apple's new iPhones dope-slap Samsung in US

MrXavia

Re: 5S and 5C impressive for different reasons

Why has Apple re-introduced them??? and is it THAT hard to slide your finger over a sensor to unlock?

Why is it whenever Apple put something on the mobile that has been around for ages in other areas its an innovation? NO its EVOLUTION, shrinking of technology means technology will evolve to use it no matter what...

True, it was the peoples fault, but can you really blame the lower classes for taking the cash?? the bankers were stupid to allow the sub-prime mortgages, the same as they were stupid to do 110% mortgages in the past in the UK (ok it makes SOME sense as that extra 10% may be used to renovate thereby raising the value of the property) but they key thing was lending money to people who can't pay it back, sort of like a loan shark does...

Hollywood: How do we secure high-def 4K content? Easy. Just BRAND the pirates

MrXavia

Re: "piracy instances ... that number is sure to rise with the advent of 4K."

Make me one of those who cares about 4K in the home...

I may be in the minority but I have a very large lounge and even my 55" 1080p TV sometimes feels a bit small for the room, so 4K to me would work nicely with a larger screen (although I really would love a 4K projector so I can hide the screen when not in use.

3D? I don't really care for it, I have plenty of films I've brought the 3D copy of but never watched, I just stick the 2D version on..

MrXavia

If watermarking means I can get DRM free 4K Video files, I would be very happy! there is no need to target downloaders, just the originators of the content.

I don't mind paying for content, I am happy to support the production companies that make entertainment I enjoy, I would never use iTunes, but I buy MP3's all the time (I wish they did lossless audio files too)

MrXavia
WTF?

A corporate card linked to a personal bank account? what country are we dealing with, that sounds barbaric and idiotic.. Whatever country does that is surly a third world?

Here in the UK corporate cards are linked to the business accounts, and each user has their own limit usually (well that is in my experience) but really avoid amex if you can, its terrible when traveling and not accepted that many places compared to VISA or Mastercard.

Re: What's wrong with DAB (continued)

DAB is great, when you can get it... but in reality, it never works right, the quality is bad, and in the end I use my mobile to stream radio when at home and end up using FM in the car, even though my car has a DAB radio.. I am only 15 miles from the radio station I listen to, yet it pops and stutters until i get to around 7 miles out when I use DAB!

I have no idea whether my car radio can handle DAB+, I just hope they future proofed it (considering how much I paid for the car they had better have!)

What I do want is a dock that is convenient to put my phone in, that is within easy reach of my hand and in my eye line but does not effect the cars aesthetics.

Google: Thanks for the billions in revenue, UK. Here are your taxes, that's ... £11m

Facepalm

Re: B******ks... (rymes with rollocks)

I think we all know that profits are revenue minus expenses... (and if you do not, your too young to be reading the reg, go back to bed you have primary school in the morning)

But their point is they employ people here who pay taxes, and the more people they employ the more taxes are paid... and YES that does help the economy, not as much as I think they are making out, but it helps...

i am not defending google, but I can understand why they do it.

MrXavia

It is simple, drop taxes to 5%,

Google made about 38% profit (£12.95bn revenue, with £4.95bn profit), so 38% of their UK revenue of £3bn according to this article, means £1.14bn profit, at 5% thats £57Million, 5 times the tax paid already...

Surely it is better to give them an incentive to pay taxes at a low rate, than fight them, since fighting will just mean costs go up.. Google will spend millions fighting any higher taxes.....

Dropping corporation tax would benefit everyone in the long run, more jobs as corporations move to take advantage of it, small & medium businesses have more money to invest in growing and less money spent on lawyers to try and cut their tax bill...

But remember that on £3bn revenue, that equates to 300Million in VAT if they were all VATable transactions...

I like the idea of being able to control my heating remotely...

being able to turn it up a bit if you feel cold, turn it off from the bedroom if your not getting up at your usual time for some reason.. I would love to be able to control it on a room by room basis too, there is no need to heat un-used rooms when the doors are closed...

BUT the key thing for me is that I would not want it on any kind of cloud provider, I would want it all running locally, what happens if the internet dies? what happens if their servers get hacked? and do you really want to give them all your data?

Linux

Re: so does that mean

haha,

OS X is Unix bases, this makes it good in many ways but preferred? no... Linux is the preference for a techie.

For mobility most people I've worked with would choose a Macbook Air, not because its a Mac, not because its got OS X but because its small & lightweight yet powerful enough to run VM's, although with the advent of smaller lighter UltraBooks, they have shifted towards buying them and installing a flavour of Linux.

Although the fact OSX has SSH & SCP is a selling point, with windows you need third party clients..

MrXavia

So Choice is a bad thing?

I really think that the comparison by number of screens and apps available is dumb...

why? because most 9 the screens shown for samsung are AVAILABLE widgets to add to the home screen...

So this is basically a large choice for users to choose from, choice outside of the Apple world is considered a good thing...

although I can agree they should remove the Story Album, Samsung Hub & FlipBoard from the home screens, they are pointless really i think....

So remove the unused widgets, ignore the 'Available' apps/widgets pages and you have yourself a very simple interface...

But what I love is that Apple stole the idea for the 'quick' pull up settings from Samsungs pull down ones(or is it an android feature?) but with Samsung, you can customise your list! I really hope Android/Samsung patented that UI feature, just so they can stick Apple with a dumb lawsuit for a change... (I really don't think its a patentable Idea but with what Apple has patented, I am sure the USPTO would allow it)

Both Android & iOS are easy to do the basics with, but with iOS you end up finding you can't do things, with Android usually there is a way to do it if you need to. That is the reason I use Android, because iOS is too simple.

MrXavia

"So you're OK with the next generation British Nuclear Deterrent sitting a whole lot closer to your front door then?"

Hell yes I would be, a sub based nuclear deterrent is the best solution at present.

Seriously though, devolution has been a mess, not just scotland but Wales & NI, how can making each nation slightly more/less independent than the other be sensible? surely ALL the members of the UK should have been given the same local powers (i.e. NI/Scotland/England/Wales be equal in that respect)? their own local assembly/parliament/ room where their ministers talk crap and decide on local issues

then a central parliament where the same group discuss and plan the country wide policies? anything that has clear divides based on member state should be a local issue... With the simple exceptions of Health, Education, Defence and Tax

Those 4 should always be a national policy, and simply put the policy should be Free Education, Free Healthcare, Defence is important but must be balanced with threats, and Taxes should be as low as possible while paying for the country and avoiding national debt.

Re: Samsung processor

iPhone just works? integration?

Sure IF all your kit is Apple, but as soon as you step outside the apple ecosystem you find things called standards... which means I can just as easily stream via DLNA to my Samsung TV as I can to my parents Panasonic, etc...

Standards mean my android phone needs no software on Windows or Linux to transfer files, yet on mac I do and then I still fight to get it to work...

Standards, something Apple likes to ignore...
