The headline...
... is misleading. Samsung SHIPS and Apple SELLS. Two totally different things.

Why does the public sector feel the need to keep bailing out the private sector?
It's politics. A government would rather throw money at a failing project than see it fail. For example railway franchises. A franchise in trouble half way through its term? Chuck money at them. Keep the shareholders sweet. Failing bank? Can't let that happen. Chuck money at them and keep the shareholders sweet.
Notice I've said "A Government". Because across all political hues, they are all as bad as each other.
Popular does not mean better. Windows is popular but a lot of people on here would consider Linux or OSX better.
"what does an ipad do that no other device does?"
I can plug my IPad into a docking station and use it in music production. It has Animoog and Korg software synths on it that are available via MIDI.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am unaware of any other tablet that has this flexibility.
I would have thought the majority of software developers would develop for the platform that would give them the best possible return for their efforts.
Android may be the dominant platform, but if developing for it doesn't pay the bills, then why bother?
Maybe they are not so clueless after all.
Every article on here connected with mobile phones degenerates into a slanging match between iPhone users and S3 users. As far as I'm concerned both will have their strengths and weaknesses and boils down to personal choice.
Are you happy with your choice of phone?
Yes - well fuck off and stop bashing other people for their own individual choice
No - well fuck off and buy a new one.

I think I have deciphered your post.....
You are comparing the sales of the Samsung Galaxy S3 against the Apple iPhone5? But over what period of time?
The iPhone 5 has sold 5 million in 3 days. The S3 has sold 20 million in 100 days. Here's a link:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/iphone-5-sells-5-million-in-first-three-days-more-than-33x-samsung-galaxy-s3-sales
If the iPhone continues to sell at this rate, it will overtake the S3's sales about a week on Wednesday. I don't think it will sell at this rate, but I am sure it will overtake the S3 well before 100 days.
haha lol
"But I don't see why somebody who admittedly didn't read the article, but instead jumped straight to the comments section to spam it with his personal thoughts & no meaningful insight would get any thumbs up from El Reg readers?"
Because s/he slagged off Apple. As I've said before you will get upvoted for slagging off Apple, slagging off Microsoft, or even better, slagging them off in a single post. It doesn't matter if the comments are unsubstantiated . Add in heaps of praise for Android and just watch those upvotes come flooding in.
"Now, I am pretty much guaranteed a protest by mentioning that Android is more like the "Muhammad Phone", and I am pretty sure that any Reg hacks who use that term would be stoned within hours".
Considering some of the garbage stories that have been on here, I think some of the hacks are already stoned.
Please tell us then what, in your opinion, is an OS that looks like a 2012 OS?
Come on. Let all the El Reg readers and commentators know.
I know, and probably everyone on here knows, you will not reply. Why? Because you are expert at slagging stuff off (always Apple), without substantiating your "argument".
So come on. Why do you think iOS is ugly? Why do you think iOS is a joke, and what OS should we all be using?
"What would Obviously! do all day?"
Day 1 - take down all the Steve Jobs & Tim Cook posters from his bedroom wall.
Day 2 - search for another manufacturer to attack when a story is released on here.
Day 3 - look for up and coming stories about said manufacturer.
Day 4 - get the 'comments' ready using the usual recipe of verbal diarrhoea and bad spelling.
Day 5 - getting excited now. Can't sleep because tomorrow the story will hit.
Day 6 - GO GO GO.
Day 7 - Rest. Got to get an early night as it's school tomorrow.
And you posting as an AC is certainly ignorant. Daren't you post your trolling under your real handle?
Overpriced toys? Top end smartphones are expensive. Taking Samsung and Apple as examples: the S3 16GB and Iphone 4S 16GB both sim-free from Amazon, there is a fiver difference in price at about £480.
Yuppies? These were around in the 80's. There is another poster on here who has a fixation with the 80's. You aren't him are you ?
Samsung are suing Apple over 4G.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/news/a403489/samsung-planning-to-sue-apple-over-4g.html
I wonder if this latest Apple salvo will be used as a bargaining chip against Samsung? Samsung keeps its current lineup of phones, Apple gets whatever is necessary for 4G and both cases are quietly dropped.
Paris: because she gets whatever is necessary
Innovation is the creation of better or more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments, and society. Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself. Innovation differs from improvement in that innovation refers to the notion of doing something different (Lat. innovare: "to change") rather than doing the same thing better

But didn't the iPhone come with one thing that none of the others didn't have - an app store?
All of a sudden here was a smartphone, like Fitz says, above was easy to use (an iPod with a phone in it), and regular Joe Public wanted to use. And they could add their own music and apps to it - easily.
I can't see HP (or any other manufacturer) cranking out a Linux tablet. Its specific target audience is too narrow and I'm not sure what you mean by "professional".
Android / iOS succeed because apps are readily available from a (mostly) central source. Not sure about a Linux store?

How long did it take you to come up with these hilarious iNames?
"I built my first portable MP3 player wih a tiny laptop hard drive back in 1993 - this certainly predates the iPod - sorry Apple...."
Why didn't you patent it then ?
Yet another troll with a massive chip on their shoulder.
This is not just about rectangles with round corners, although it's this facet of the case that is always quoted on here, and indeed on other forums because it gets the most amount of people frothing at the mouth.
My understanding is:
1 Samsung had a touchscreen phone
2 It was rectangular with rounded corners
3 It had square icons that may be described as 'dull'
4 Apple release iPhone
5 Samsung release new phone that is rectangular with rounded corners
6 Samsung change its square icons to colourful (less dull?) rounded square cornered ones like the iPhone
7 Changes certain icon designs to look similar to iPhone ones.
8 Samsung packages this phone in a similar way to Apple (phone is presented at top of box rather than buried in the box)
9 Samsung packaging changed to look similar to Apple.
Like I said, this is MY understanding of why Apple and Samsung are in court. I'm sure this is a simplistic account and others will correct me if I'm wrong.
