Amazon cloud goes down in Northern Virginia

Boo-boo?

All Flickr members were informed over 24 hours ago that there would be a maintenance period this morning - so it can hardly have been an outage at all, unless you think major sites are now planning outages to rectify faults they already know will happen ???

The site was up again at the announced time with no problems.

BSkyB boss: 'I don't work for Rupert Murdoch, remember'

Marlan

Not yet, you mean

The whole point is that, once the other 61% are bought up, the BSkyB boss will be working for him!

So, if the BSkyB boss can be influenced as he is already with only 39%, he will soon be completely at Murdo's beck and call, i.e. 'within firing range' if he doesn't fit his bill ...

It's Monopoly, stupid!

Apple, publishers and ebook pricing – what does it all mean?

Marlan

And the authors who produce the goods, where are they in all this??

The real losers in all of this are the actual authors who will lose even more through discounting.

Publishers have a monopoly that limits authors' royalties, because authors themselves have no distribution channels and publishers have that monopoly . Why is nobody trying to break that???

Apple has attempted to offer an outlet, like other print-on-demand and self-publishing companies, so I would at least put Apple in the Barnes & Noble league of offering authors a fair percentage for their product (e-books cost peanuts to produce, so publishers are raking it in).

Time to get priorities and perspectives in order I think!

Apple tells authors: All your books iBook files are belong to us

Complete rubbish compared to any other publishing agreement

If you wanted to publish your book any where else you would only receive around 15% of any proceeds from sales - even less a percentage for electronic versions, audio books, etc. - so count yourself lucky you are getting more then two thirds of the sale price.

When you publish a book you give up your copyright to the publisher, so don't confuse things with the 'moral' copyright everybody holds and Apple recognises. Publishing is a form of leasing out your work and the publisher takes a big profit.

Given Apple's worldwide distribution network through iTunes, it is almost equal to most large publishers, so you are getting a bargain on distribution.

The Register is merely Apple bashing as usual on this one and should get its facts right - i.e. producing some pretty rotten cider with a load of silly fizz. Obviously the editorial staff have been replaced by Androids!

Stallman: Did I say Jobs was evil? I meant really evil

Just another guy wanting to blame others for his own blindness

It seems that nowadays, when most things are failing, anything that is successful (especially globally) is the butt for ire and demonisation. Stallman is just another tired old guy who cannot stand to see the small guy succeed and can only shower his bile and envy on those that contradict his obsessive and weary 'rationalistic' ideals. They can't admit their beliefs are wrong, so they look for the 'devil' as an excuse. You'd think witch-hunting was a thing of the past, but then, guys like him are stuck in the past where you are either god or the devil with no greys in between. Get thee behind me Satan-oops--StallMan!

Apple, Amazon trademark spat turns surreal

Intelligent beings ?

The Harry's of this world obviously don't understand English or logic ...

<<Right, so we better all get it out of our heads that a drug store is a store for drugs

, and ... ... ???>> asks Harry ...

... ... SO think it through carefully: a drugstore is no more a store for generic drugs than the App Store is a store for generic apps - ERGO, it is a store for Apple apps and that is what Apple is trying to get into a lot of generic PC minds who want to have generic stores.

Windows with a capital letter is their copyrighted computer OS and and the App Store with capitals is Apple's copyrighted Application store. So you can all go off and buy apps at your app stores, but you won't get Android apps at the App Store, just as you won't get an adobe mud hut from Adobe or a foster child from Foster's or the next best thing from Next. There are thousands of generic words used for specific copyrighted products, so the only thing that is stopping you from accepting Apple's rights to a term has to be pure enmity.

Give your lack of English understanding a rest, please, trolls ...

Apple adds 'make the web go away' button to Safari 5

The truly extra advantage is in printing ...

If you notice there is a fade-in menu at the bottom of the reader page and a print button - this means you can print out articles now without all the web page gubbins getting in the way - I shall be using this all the time now!
