not buying one?

Oh, well, if AC isn't buying one then they might as well not bother!

I currently have hilarious visions of AC sitting in front of the telly watching science documentaries and screaming 'What the bloody hell do I need an LHC for!? If they ring me up trying to sell me one I'll tell them where to stick it!'

Google blames bug for Gmail deletions

and Gmail users probably work in packs

I would also speculate that GMail users often communicate with other GMail users so they could really take advantage of this by identifying common message fragments and attachments and only storing each of these once. Sort of like an app-aware de-dupe on steroids.

Watson? Commercial – not super – computer

AlexH
FAIL

Point: missed.

A/C is a good choice as you are missing the point.

Watson is addressing TWO problems, not just the single one you mention. Asking questions of a computer in a manner it can understand is, in some cases, something that can be taught to most people.

The next step is the computer has to look through information to determine the correct answer. If the information it has access to is all correct and structured then this isn't a (massive) problem. Most data ISN'T - and currently computers can't use that for very much - Watson also looks to solve this problem.

So, while you're on your crusade to weed out people who can't construct search terms properly would you also mind structuring and verifying the mountains of information we have kicking around too?

Cheers.

Cloud?

No mention of clouds in this WiFi-Connected kit? How odd...

Seriously though, what the man in the street wants is (whether he knows it or not!) is for his pictures to end up in the cloud without his intervention (sync photos to computer; use picasa to upload to picasa web; lose portion of Sunday). Does it do this?

Console games 'hack' reseller gets community service order

WTF?

Becoming more common

Now, granted I haven't owned a games console since the Megadrive and stopped playing games when they released Counterstrike so I may be out of touch here, but from what I gather console 'chipping' isn't HALF as common as it used to be. Back in PS1 games it seemed that ~80% of consoles were chipped and there was a thriving market in pirated games. Contrast this with today - I've NEVER seen a pirated XBOX360/PS3/Wii game on anyone's shelf.

Check please!

Indeed. Just before the introduction of Chip and Pin my gf had broke her leg so when we went out socialising together I would go to the bar when it was her round and pay with her card. I always signed my own name and NEVER had any problems. Even the ~50% of times the person processing the transaction would go through the appropriate hand and eye motions to 'check' the signatures matched.

£20m to do a refund?!

Here's my break-down:

£1m on the actual refund.

Recruit 30 people who over the course of a year have to process 1,000 refunds each, pay them loads for the simple task (20k) = £600,000

So that leaves over £18m for management, overheads, premesis, etc.

SOUNDS FINE TO ME!

Music

I hope the app plays the same music as that YouTube video, otherwise I don't think people will feel quite as 'Jack Bauer' as they might like to...

Google renews vows with Chrome OS

AlexH

agree

One large reason being that every new Ubuntu release I do a fresh install, and every time I find myself configuring less and less, to the point where right now I have little more than Google Chrome and a bunch of chrome 'application shortcuts' in my quick-access icons on the taskbar...

Oh, and there's also spotify, but I wouldn't be surprised if that gets a web front-end a-la Grooveshark at some point in the future.

YES, I want to keep my 'proper' computer for the 5% (probably less) of the time that I want to do other things, but well, I'm sure you see my point.

obviously not a smart-phone user...

...if the only application for simultaneously playing music whilst using the phone for something else that you can think of is "playing romantic music in the background while talking to your wife on Saint Valentine's Day!"

I enjoy being able to surf the internet, respond to text messages and read my email whilst I'm listening to music, just a shame apple won't let me use spotify (yet).

Joke

Turning large amounts of data into information...

...would require an army of cheap humans to do the processing. Sounds like a perfect task for outsourcing!

Joke... I think.
