Many, many El Reg readers have no association with, or long since terminated any association with facebook.
I would add IG and TT and Twiterverse, but hey, that's where the shiny attention getting things are... I'm sure there are more. I'm old, and either I don't care, or my memory is going...
I'm more interested in the Bowie and Fogerty comments, and didn't someone quote the band America with the stardust bit?
"A good" friend of mine is a huge Beatles fan, and one birthday, he received as a gift, a pack of Beatles collectors cards. One of these cards was black and white pic of Paul, with his hand on his cheek, and looking oh so dreamy. Other friends and I made sport of that photo, so the "good friend" had photo copies of it made. Pretty soon we started finding these photo copies in our coat pockets, in our cars, and even in our mail boxes! It was all good fun! We called that getting "Dreamy Paul'd"
Not too long ago, I found one of those photo copies in a photo album, and have snapped a photo of it, and now I do the Digital Dreamy Paul now and again...
How many politicians are still in their original positions after 12 years? And did the successor pick up the ball and run? Or did they do what they wanted ( as all politicians do these days, instead of what the constituency wants? ) and say it was a mess before I started, and I have no clue how to move forward? And pass it on to the next seat holder?
Hot potato anyone?? Musical Chairs???
Where is the totally clueless icon when we need one?? GET with it Reg.com
Once, long ago, I was in way over my head, I didn't know the app in question at all, I told a PA to a D level that her computer needed to be shutdown* and unplugged for 10 minutes to drain the capacitors, I needed a few more minutes to read up on her App's error message. And was praying to the reboot gods for assistance too. When I returned to her desk, I found my boss clacking away on the keyboard, he looked up without missing a beat and said, "The capacitors are drained, and I've been able to correct the error." I could tell there was a smile under his beard somewhere...
*Shutdown as in shutdown any other questions I couldn't answer, she was the PA to a Director... I didn't want to look incompetent!
I don't think I would have the brassneck to lecture a self-made multi-billionaire on how to run a business or make money.
Self-made through inheritance? and didn't his family make this fortune through questionable channels too? It seems that the internet has been scrubbed of articles that confirm or deny this in full.

Are these the same ads that pop up on dubious news sites? Served with a side of Malware with trojan cherry on top?? I'll pay the Cupertino tax instead... I'm writing this on an 11 year old macmini, it was free, a gift from a friend who upgraded 6 or 7 years ago.
Yes, and no... I have a whole bunch of this pyrex stuff, and the lids don't fit for shit... just hand washing them warped the lids, now they rarely get used. Besides with Tupperware, you buy it once*, and it last a looong time. Up until my last move, in 2021, I had Tupperware from my Grandma's estate, she died in '97 and had the stuff as far back as I can remember.
*It usually had to be bought at a Tupperware party too, not sure how many people were throwing Tupperware parties in lockdown.
And not putting all of your eggs in one basket. Keep a foot in both worlds. Years ago, the team I worked with wanted a Co-Lo, we scoped it out, visited the facility, and looked at cost. Not so attractive. A few years later, a move to the cloud for email, then a few more things, but it stopped there for that org. They still had a 3 node cluster of VMware hosting lots of services that could have gone into the cloud. A handful of physical servers doing local stuff, it worked well I must say.
The last time I had one of these doohickies on my belt was 1998, and was never so happy when I took it off for the last time, and left it on the owners desk, that 25th anniversary will be coming around soon! And as for FAX, I put them in the same hopper as printers... The devil's devices! To put it nicely ;-}
"...but a moderate level of theft and thus extra sales doesn't actually seem to to have much of a downside to counter the extra sales."
Leaking this kind of info would also 'boost' sales, the invisible column in the spreadsheet, repeat customers? Maybe not if their car gets boosted!
...knowledge of each box's function fades into legend...
I still get a phone call once in a while about what some things do, or should do, I always answer and help my old teammates out in a pinch. I don't think any call has lasted longer than 10-15 minutes. Happy to be the archive, I did pass on my previous managers hand written notes for AD to the poor soul that would pick have that dumped on his plate...
