Mars needs women, claims NASA pseudo 'naut: They eat less

illiad

Re: This'll never work

well I hate to disappoint, but women have been going to space since the 1960's... I'm sure they know what happens by now... so do tell me, do you regularly have chats with your mate's about 'how to pee' ???? LOL

that must be difficult in zero gravity.... LOL

illiad

Re: joke maybe, but you have a point

erm he wasn't talking about clothes!!! ANY man knows, if your equipment isnt clean enough to function properly, its no good to anyone... A thick layer of grease is ok for the mechanical stuff, but ...

Re: The Register is becoming a bit of a killjoy

you heard of YMMV ???

and the TV guide does not help...

'an enemy that exists beyond human perception' ?? no, it was '2 dimensional' perfectly easy to 'see' by all the people in the episode...

'doctor in the tiny tardis' - No, as any DrWho fan knows, the tardis exists outside earth's dimension, so it may look small, but inside it is normal sized... it is just the door that changes size.. the *outside* of the tardis gets so small she can put it in her handbag!! :)

Re: rant-like journalism

semantics, semantics... {rolleyes}

what is your definition of 'evolution' ?? Just put two good things together and expect a good result??

Two intelligent people have kids, and you may find that NOT all of them are intelligent...

two very average people have kids, some of them may be more intelligent, some not..

how does natural selection work??? the moth 'just decides' it will change its spots???

sorry, but things have to DIE to evolve... the offspring of the original moth had varying spot patterns...

... you do know that the moth only lives for three weeks?? it may seem a short life to you, but...

Nature *selected* that the moths that were more visible to its prey were much easier to be killed...

Those that were not killed, of course had kids... and those kids that were not killed, went on to make more 'evolved to the environment' kids...

and of course we do not let 'weak' humans die... :/

Re: Many of us are forced to use MS Software

Its NOT that its 'broken'... they think it is great... I doubt very much that they use it day after day though..

illiad

Re: er, people ARE forced to use Microsoft software...

sorry, but my company is not very rich, unlike most.... it is licensed charity, using mostly volunteers.. and I am one of only 4 people who have any clue about computers!!!

Only in the same way a chief MD would get their 15 year old daughter to work as a nurse there!!!

I am sure the FINAL win 10 will be much better then!!! the feedback is for YOU to tell MS what you want!!

Re: rant-like journalism

um, evolution is mostly dead...

If you don't know how evolution works, it is 'survival of the fittest, able to pass their genes to their children..'

In this modern society, even the old and sick, the lazy, the diseased and incapable, are given lifesaving treatments...

In the wild, the above will all die, and those that survive due to being resistant , fast to avoid predators, stronger to beat others, then pass this on to their children.. therefore evolution makes stronger, more able, healthier animals.. this will take many lifetime to see any effect..

A recent example is a particular moth, normally with a black/ white mottled wings, made it home on a factory roof- after a few generations, its wings changed to mostly black, to fit in with the black roof - so its main predator, birds, could not see them easily... :)

Re: Windows 10 who cares?

yes, MS.. PLEASE have a close look at how Firefox and it addons work... eg adblock etc..

illiad

Re: How easy is it to turn on in the release version?

IF you are talking about win10, it is NOT a beta... it is a PREVIEW, NOT even an alpha!!!

of course, the RC version is **MONTHS** away... you have more hope of predicting 20C heat for next month, than what the RC will be like... :P

illiad

er, people ARE forced to use Microsoft software...

If you work for a big company, management are just TOO frightened to NOT use microsoft...

when we switched to the latest Office, this poor IT guy, here, had to go round and enable not just compatibility mode, but styles and fonts that everyone used, so letters still were standard...

compulsory voting may give those lazy people a kick, to vote for something they want, but it may take a few years after they realise the current party keeps staying in office, that they realize they need to take *action* to remove him!!

yes, when its dark, its sooo much easier to mug someone....

illiad

Re: Light preference

You can make all the lux, lumen whatever calcs you want, but average people use a standard incandescent filament bulb wattage, as they have been used for ages...

A bright office is good so you can your work properly, but after work you need to rest your eyes...

Incandescents are all that have been used for ages...There is nothing 'traditional' or 'cosy' about it!! that is all the average person had!! >:(

... unless you are rich enough to have a large place with space for huge strip-lights...

CFL came out in 1985, and took about 5 years to become vaguely affordable to normal people!

illiad

Re: At least the blue LED has a solid, real world application...

The REAL trick.....

Is how to separate the graphene from the sellotape!!!! :? :D

Homer, do you REALLY think they actually do that???? >:(

illiad

Re: Switch off Hinckley Point

... and when everyone is driving an electric car, we will NEED Hinckley Point to provide the extra power to charge them!!!! :D :D

illiad

Re: Won't reduce the need for power stations in the US

The load isn't the main problem! how many times have you changed a light bulb?? for me that would have been 2 or 3 times a year!

I put all CFL in 10 years ago, the first went bad only a couple of years ago... the only other changes I have done is upgrade one to 'fast switch on' type...

I am still waiting for a decent 1000lumen (similar to 75 watt filament) here in UK..

the best is 870 lumen, roughly like 50W... not worth me spending 20 quid on! :)

illiad

Re: "However, from what we know about human behaviour"

blue LED porn? haven't you got a bluray drive to play it???? LOL

illiad

this is the reason LEDs + phosphor is much better... the colour temperature of the phosphor is much easier to adjust.. AFAIK

Also LED lights have to have good heat-sinking, so that excess heat does not reduce their life..

It is **brainless** managers that are too afraid of 'non-MS ' that do it... :(

illiad

Re: Safari & Opera

opera is basically dead, they totally ruined the interface, and use the same engine as chrome, so you might as well use that, its better!!

I am still using O v1214, with many hacks to stop it updating etc...

Moon landing was real and WE CAN PROVE IT, says Nvidia

illiad

Re: Nvidea, did you also manage to explain

Mythbusters did a special on the moon ages ago!

remember, there is NO air on the moon, also gravity is very low.. this is what slows things down, air resistance, and the weight of the cloth..

so on the moon, the flag has to be held up by a bar on the top of the flag - and while they were planting the flag, of course it would move a lot - - it kept moving by itself, due to NO air resistance!!

Re: Uneducated toss.

It all depends what you want...

- got loads of money, want the latest 'designer' phone (to be dumped next year when a better model comes out.. :/ ), that all you need is to take pics, make phone calls and stuff??? - oh, and no clue what this other stuff the geeks are talking about, the apple guys tells me its the best, pass the bolly!... :P

- you want something that is a lot more functional, that will keep going for years, keep 100's of gigs of your movies/ music/ pics etc on, and just swap out a memory card if you want a change...

That a lovely pic, mate, can I have a copy? sure, switch on yer bluetooth, right? ok sending now! :)

when will apple be that simple...

Re: "hard core of folks"

But what on earth must people be on to still use bloody Vista?!!

I put win7 on a friends laptop, she liked it..... until she tried a lot of her old apps - she has a large database of here LPs... didn't work so well...

Best shot: Coffee - how do you brew?

illiad

cafetiere

no sign of the cafetiere.. or is this a reverse aeropress?? My mum used the cona, but not for a busy family - simpler to buy the 'self-contained' filter coffee..

If you dunno, the cafetiere is simple pot about 1 or 2 cup capacity, fill with ground beans and boiling water, then push down the filter when done, and just pour out the coffee! :)

successful?? take a look at how 'known' linux was a few years ago.. now almost everyone knows what ubuntu means... :)

successful? look at nokia.... MS thought they were onto a good thing... that is why they sacked 18,000, most of them ex-nokia employees.... :/

powershell?? dunno who uses it - certainly not those in offices, or at home...

Time to move away from Windows 7 ... whoa, whoa, who said anything about Windows 8?

illiad

my 2 cents....

I think the problem is the management of these big companies has NO CLUE about the software... they only recognise it from a business financial direction.. that is most likely why Nokia went for MS.. they just thought a big company would save their financial asses!! not much hope recently!!! :P

Increasingly it is big management that makes the decisions, and as Linux is not that big financially, it does not get their attention... that is why us techs have to use the 'industry standard' that has become over bloated, and sort out the managers PC cos he has no clue about it....

you need to go to Portugal .. spain or france may do it, but I dont know personally..

And then DO NOT go to the big shops that sell 'english friendly water' :P :)
