Other VLIW…pre-IA64

Cydrome Cydra5

Multiflow Trace7,14,28

Not microprocessors but VLIW shipped commercially significantly before IA64. Indeed some of the designers of each ended up at HP and Intel which, no doubt, helped lead to the tie up.

News?

Very old news. Solved long ago in "fdlibm" see http://www.validlab.com/arg.pdf for a write-up of the algorithm. Earlier versions of the same paper appeared in "SunProgrammer" RIP

IBM plays with its Lego, hits upon System X server redesign brainwave

Power not Lego

Rather than crediting Lego for the Book motif, I think you should have looked to the IBM Power family. They've been using the "books" nomenclature for many years.

"...VMs..."

While fine for application stacks, operating systems really need to be certified against actual hardware (unless the goal is to have an OS which ONLY runs in some set of Virtualization environments).

Isn't this really Kodak 1.0?

While Henry Ford did price carefully, the notion of "giving away the razor, and profiting on the blades" predates him (indeed, dawn of the "safety razor" business. As for "technology" companies, it was the original Kodak philosophy which worked well as long as film remained king (and Kodak got the processing $ from paper, chemicals, and often the labwork itself).

if one looks deeply into the razor story (Gillette) its actually pretty convoluted as their original patents (1904) would have been the timeframe for the obvious deployment, but it wasn't until the patents were expiring that they went down this path. But that's fodder for some other forum ;>

Ten... Wireless Headphones

JVC HA-w7008T

Like the Sony, it's a small external dongle that any standard headphones connect to. Personally, I alternate between Yamaha RH5Ma, custom moulds with aging Sure in hear ear buds and off the shelf Bose ...

While an integrated unit is slightly "easier" separating the bluetooth electronics from the actual sound generating units makes for a far more flexible and longer lasting product.

The JVC has paired with anything I've thrown at it, produces lovely quality sound and has exhibited good battery life (viz. longer than my usual day at the office, where I primarily use them).

Works with cellphones as well My only gripe is no mute for the microphone, so one has to use the phone's mute.

Adobe to sue Apple 'within weeks,' says report

Anyone recall Thompson's ACM Turning speech?

The topic was security and trust, specifically how he hacked the C compiler to subvert programs compiled with it.

I predict Apple will use it as the basis of the argument that in order to have a fully trusted platform, they need to manage/own/certify the development tools.
