Google's Schmidt calls climate-change deniers 'liars'

Bryce 2

I am not a climatologist but....

When a respected scientist says something like this, it makes you think...

"There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period."

"Okay. With this as a preparation, let's turn to the evidence, both graphic and verbal, for

global warming. As most of you have heard many times, the consensus of climate scientists

believes in global warming. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of

scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled.

Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your

wallet, because you're being had. "

- Michael Crichton

If you haven't read the speeches, they are very interesting and can be found at http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/commentaries_essays/crichton_three_speeches.html

Granted, they were made some time ago, but it is my opinion that they are still relevant.

It's not all bad

While you are certainly entitled to your opinion, not everyone on the net is a "scammer" or a manipulator.

I have been married for over 11 years to a woman I met over the internet. At the time we met, both of us had been living in different countries separated by the Atlantic.

And this was in the days of IRC.

So yes, while there are people out there who live in a fantasy world, or manipulate others, or who scam... keep in mind that not everyone is doing it.

Speaking as a bibliophile

I make most of my book purchases from Amazon anyway, so it's not much of a stretch.

Bryce 2

As a bibliophile

I can say that I spend much more than £109 a year on books. Lots more. I generally read 5 - 6 books a week and recently had my bookshelf collapse under the weight of my personal library.

This is perfect for me as now instead of having to carry multiple paperbacks on my person, I can carry one device that holds my entire library, and even better it won't punish my furniture.

I find it amusing that people skip over the US-based part and only see the "anywhere in the world" part.

While I think the bill is stupid and likely not to be passed, the fact remains that it is intended only for US-based users/companies/domains... NOT the rest of the world.

The USA is still a relatively young country compared to those on the other side of the atlantic. I'm sure that there are MANY things that some European countries wish they could shove under the rug and never look at again. Much less think about.

@fellswoop

Agreed. There are a lot of people that seem to think that warfare is very cut and dry. I very seriously doubt there have been any wars where there have been NO civilian casualties, NO atrocities, NO incidents of friendly fire. Especially in this kind of war. It's a very stressful environment.

It's only because of the "Information Age" and how quickly information gets spread across the globe that any of this data is even known this fast.

It's oh-so-easy to judge people in hindsight without giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Is US prudishness ruining the internet?

Bryce 2

It's PC gone mad

I personally think the problem is "Political Correctness". I understand the point behind there being a certain level of "PC", but the distance the world has crossed that line is a bit crazy. You can see aspects of "PC gone Mad" everywhere.

Everyone is afraid of offending someone. You can't say anything with offending someone. If even one person complains, it's a Bad Thing!

As for Americans being stupid/dumb/lazy/etc. Every country has a portion of their population that is the same way, it's just that the American failings get broadcast out to the entire world.

It's also always the bad things that get transmitted to everyone as well, hardly ever the good things. Just the nature of the media beast I suppose.

I'm more puzzled by your attitude. I personally find it disturbing that you enjoy tying up and beating your wife. To me, that is not normal. You also take photos of this as well. I would be of the opinion that you would need help because use violence in your relationships.

I don't agree with what you do, but I'll defend your right to do it.

On the other hand, I am also of the opinion that if you don't actually DO something, how can you be guilty of doing it?

There have been more than a few books feeaturing nude children in them - just ask Brooke Shields - as well as movies with nude *gasp* underaged children in them - again ask Brooke Shields - and none of those were ever considered *illegal*... they would be now however.

Pupils find teacher's abuse images

Bryce 2

Yes really...

Exactly what has this guy done OTHER than possess photos? Has he abused children? No. Has he hurt anyone? No.

Until he crosses the line and actually DOES abuse someone or hurt someone, then he has not committed any ACTIONS that require punishment.

Punishing him for something he MIGHT do, is what is wrong. You should punish him for something he's DONE, not what he MIGHT do.

I believe that is what the poster above you is trying to say.

Death row inmate claims allergy to lethal injection

Bryce 2

Re: exactly

No, "Society" is supposed to decide the punishment that fits the crime. That's why there are laws that determine boundaries of behaviour. There needs to be the option of a punishment that fits the crime.

You may or not agree with the death penalty, I definitely believe that is one that should be allowed as an option.

Bryce 2

@A J Stiles

First you'd have to convince me that prisoners are who society values least.

Bryce 2

@Sarah Bee

No, not you personally. That's what the government is supposed to provide. Justice for its citizens.

Bryce 2

Wow

I wonder how many of you opposed to the death penalty have had someone murder someone close to you or to your family.

And I wonder how many of you would change your mind once you've gone through the experience.

For those of you that have had the experience, how do you feel about it?

I support the death penalty. I'm not afraid to hide behind the AC tag to state that fact.

Bryce 2

@Oh shit, the death penalty issue again.

I've got a better idea. Let's get all the people opposed to the death penalty on a list. Let them pay for all the expenses that the criminals who deserve a death penalty incur for as long as they are in prison.

A person murders a member of your family? Congratulations, you are now responsible for the care and feeding for that person for the rest of their life (or yours).

How does that thought strike you?

Bryce 2

@Cue flaming?

Ah yes, the tired old saw... "Isn't killing someone for murder hypocritical?"

First off, your proposed solution "Lock them up for life" is also a "death sentence", it's just the cowardly way out of it. Keeping people locked up for life ultimately costs the average citizen more than any kind of capital punishment. So great, we have here someone who has decided he didn't want to live by the rules of society and instead of making the criminal pay for it, society does instead.

Second, I just love all the gentle hearted people crying about the criminal. What about the victim? What about their rights? The big difference between the criminal and the victim here is that the criminal is still alive. Just because the victim is dead does not mean we should forget about them.

Third, all the bleeding hearts in the world have made prisons more like a long holiday than an actual deterrent. If prisons were places that actually punished the people in them, then maybe we wouldn't have to send as many people there. Sure, you get locked up, and possibly raped repeatedly, but you get taken care of, all at the taxpayers expense. The farce that is the death penalty is also not much of a deterrent these days. How many years and how many tax dollars are spent before the sentence of death is actually carried out?

Fourth, the old "what if you execute an innocent argument". What makes you think that there's any realistic way that any government would be able to compensate someone they locked up that long?

The death penalty isn't uncivilized. What is uncivilized is letting all these people who don't care about the community, or have any respect for the people they live with locked up and making the society pay for it all. Not only do they not contribute to the society, they feed it on it, sucking up tax dollars like a parasite while not have to do anything at all.

Society takes better care of its criminals than it does to the law-abiding people that live within it. How can you possibly call that "civilized"?

Wikifounder reports Wikiparent to FBI over 'child porn'

Bryce 2

Seriously?!?

First off, let's get one thing straight. An image (whether real or a drawing) of a 16 year old doing the dance of the beast with two backs is not paedophilia. Paedophilia is the preference to have sexual relationships with PRE-pubescent children. Thus anyone who has gone through puberty cannot be the object of paedophilia (as long as said actions occur after puberty of course).

Second, you cannot "encourage" paedophilia. There is a certain percentage of the population (and I'm fairly sure it's a small percentage) that are paedophiles. John Q Public does not wake up one day and go... hmmmm, I think I'll go molest some pre-pubescent children today (or download kiddie porn). It just doesn't happen. The vast majority of people do not enjoy it. Simple as.

Third, all the crazy legislation that has taken place world wide with the moniker "Protect the Children" will not change anything in regards to paedophiles. You can't cure them, you can't rehabilitate them, it's just the way they're wired. What the government needs to be doing instead of wailing "think of the children" is to prevent these people from gaining easy access to children or materials. Ban them from the internet - for a start. Ban them from working with children. Stop sending people to jail for having a laugh over the Simpson cartoons and start doing something to actually prevent the people with the problem from gaining easy access to the sick stuff.
