Reality check

I am all against murdering of innocent people. But when the alternative is a nice mushroom and radiation cloud, well, better them dead than me.

Call it selfishness, call it my vulgar survival instinct... I don't mind.

Silverlighters committed despite Microsoft's HTML5 love

Thumb Down

@AC

Silverlight is an absolute horror to install. Maybe on your dev machine it is easy, what with all the .Net v1,2,3,3.5 and 4 already installed. But on your average john-doe machine installing silverlight is a nightmare.

Novell keeps Unix copyrights from Microsoft

amehaye
Linux

Who cares about the copyright

It is the 650 software patents Novell sold to Microsoft that concerns me. More ammo to that gigantic anti-Linux patent troll.

This is what you get

for bundling UI code in the kernel.

Repeat after me: I shall not incorporate UI/Shell/Explorer/other unneeded code in the kernel. Damn thing is hard enough to write securely as it is.

IP is not only copyright

There is this 'patent' thingy. I wonder if Novell could enrich Microsoft anti-Linux war chest by a few of these. Troll, for what Microsoft has devolved into.

Murder

I do not know if the Mossad is responsible for the assassination of Mabhuh. I wish they are. The guy earned it rightfully. I know from the comments here that Israeli blood is cheap in your eyes, so you might not care. But Mabhuh is responsible for kidnapping and murdering Israeli soldiers, among other acts of terrorism.

You condemn Israel for protecting itself. Maybe it makes you feel morally superior. Maybe you even think that you will not suffer from acts of terrorism. Live in your blissful ignorance as long as you can, because it does not really matter whether Israel exists or not. Sooner or later the fundamentalist Islam will come-a-knocking on your door. By then it will already be too late.

It is really easy to be all left winged and liberal when the matters affect somebody-else-life. I wonder how long you will remain in your attitude when the guys you love so much show you their true colors. It would have been funny, had it not been so sad.

Paris, because after all, she is smarter than some of you guys.

Microsoft assembles unlikely band of brothers against patent trolls

amehaye
Linux

Sorry, can't hail the big patent troll

Wasn't it Microsoft who claims Linux and co. violate more than 200 patents, without even disclosing which patents these are?

First let them pay. Then reform the system.

OpenOffice files Oracle divorce papers

Re: VirtualBox

That would be problematic.

OpenOffice is licensed under GPLv3 which confers patent protection, so Oracle cannot sue the producers/distributors/users of the LibreOffice fork.

VirtualBox, on the other hand, is licensed under GPLv2 which does not confer patent protection:

Microsoft takes Oracle side in Google Java-phone attack

amehaye
Headmaster

Interesting

If Google infringes Oracle patents, than so does Microsoft. They, too, have a virtual machine running a Java clone on their phones.

Oracle offers Java distraction to Google fisticuffs

amehaye

GPL will not protect you

The OpenJDK is released under GPLv2, and not by accident. GPLv3 protects you from patent-infringement litigation. GPLv2 does not, and that is exactly why it was chosen for OpenJDK. So no uncertainty here - if you use Java Oracle can sue you.

Microsoft to embrace and extend HTML 5?

amehaye

Re: Spot on

Nobody except in-house enterprise software developers that is. Just as they tied their apps to IE6 they will happily tie them to IE9 specific APIs. Especially if Microsoft touts that as the 'right way' to develop software.

Re: In some ways C# is more open than Java

You forget that C# and the CLR are protected by patents owned by Microsoft. The situation is no different from the Java situation. Being standardized does not remove the patent encumbrance.

Empires built on free code aren't cheap

Re: Yes, but...

Ah, but you cannot break out of Google or Microsoft solutions. They incur a very tight lock-in. Amazon is the easiest to break out of, which is exactly the reason for its huge success. Developers aren't stupid, they see lock-in for what it is.

Microsoft's ARM deal fuels hope of a chilled-out Xbox

amehaye

Not the XBox

ARM does not make sense in an XBox, it is too underpowered. A more plausible reason is that Microsoft is building their own phone/pad/mobile device.
