Ford to save you from BIKE FITNESS HORROR

stucs201

Re: Frack Bicycle Hub Gears and any gear change at the hub, always a really stupid idea!

Do you have some specific alternative in mind? Something in the bottom bracket? Part of a shaft drive? Or just a general wish for something better?

I ask because I think one of the reasons I've hardly ever ridden my bike is that it turns out I *hate* derailers, so if I was to buy an alternative my inclination would be towards hub gears - not that I've much experience of those either (my previous bike was a BMX as a kid), but vaguely recall them being much nicer from having a go on a mate's Grifter.

I'm not sure I'm too worried about punctures being a hassle, they would be anyway for me (fixing the last one involved whinging "Dad....!" about quarter of a century ago). Similarly changing rims - I can't think why I'd do that other than a crash bad enough to bend a wheel, in which case I've got bigger things to worry about than the labour cost of getting someone to rebuild the wheel.

Re: Electric bike prices do seem rather high.

600 is somewhat more realistic, at least thats less than my annual fuel bill for the car (I only fill the tank once a month)

stucs201

Re: Gazelle e-bike

Electric bike prices do seem rather high. The cost of one that's at all likely to be reliable seems closer to motorbike prices than pedal-bike prices (*), despite most of their parts being shared with pedal bike. Are batteries and motors really that expensive?

I'd quite like an electric bike to get to work on, but for the relatively short distance involved and these prices it makes more finacial sense to just carry on putting fuel in the car and forget about a bike.

* Yes I know some people spend this sort of money on pedal-bikes, but they tend to be enthisiasts wanting the lightest possible bike, whereas the electric bike seems more suited to the commuter who doesn't fancy arriving at work half-dead from strugling up hills.

So how's that going to work when the car is left at a garage for a service or is left in airport parking while going on holiday? I'd much rather leave behind a single-purpose piece of metal than a fancy watch I might want for something else.

Yes you can. Comes in jars. Obviously not 100% the same as freshly made (since they have to stabilise it so it lasts long enough to sell), but a much easier option when hung-over.

FOCUS! 7680 x 4320 notebook and fondleslab screens are coming

stucs201

Re: 576

Doh! I'd like a 16K screen then please - that'll sort it out :)

stucs201

8K screens are actually nice for low res content too

4320 is an integer multiple of each of 480, 720, 1080 and 2160. This makes an 8K screen the only one that you can use to display content created for all of the common lower resolutions (of the same aspect ratio) with pixel-perfect scaling.

Microsoft loves Surface pen maker N-trig so much it bought it – report

stucs201

Re: Wacom has a far better technology, wasted money

Reducing the number of layers in the screen isn't just about device thickness. It's about reducing parallax differences between where the pen is and where the detecting layer registers it.

Also the bluetooth pairing is only for the onenote button. Its completely unrelated to the main pen technology.

Back seat drivers fear lead-footed autonomous cars, say boffins

stucs201

Re: @big_D

Yes that does need addressing. Probably sensible to ensure that robot cars are tested to higher standards if we're going to ask more of them (and if we're not then why bother with them?). Perhaps program this into the controlling software: no recent safety check and it refuses to join the high speed road train.

stucs201

Re: good distances between cars is just good for overall traffic flow

With human driver who have to respond to each other then yes it is. With robot cars that can accelerate as one, brake as one and negotiate upcomming manouvers in advance then the best traffic flow comes from not wasting road space and only opening up a gap when it is needed to let another car join the group or let another group through at a junction. Saying robot cars should leave the same gaps as humans need for traffic flow reasons is like claiming a train would be better with more space between the carriages.

stucs201

Re: Roller coasters

Of course the safe distance should get a lot lower for groups of autonomous cars. At motorway speeds recommended distances are more to do with reaction time than actual stopping distance. Since computers react faster than people that distance should come down, especially if the cars were in communication with each other and in a dedicated lane.

It sounds like human nervousness could limit this benefit though.

stucs201

Re: cough

Productive as a passenger? Not for everyone. I don't get travel sick except under one condition: if I try to read or do other things that mostly involve not being able to spend most of the journey looking out of the window.

stucs201

Well this could kill some of the major advantages.

I'd really been hoping that self-driving cars could improve motorway congestion and travel times by having closely packed (determined by computer, not human, reaction times) groups of cars travelling at high speed (perhaps about 90mph?). Sounds like nervous passengers might break that idea :(

Similarly for the idea of getting more cars through green lights at junctions by having the entire queue start moving at the same time when the lights change, instead of the delay between each car that you get with human drivers.

stucs201

In the range of radio frequencies we use for broadcast it isn't a huge background - the Earth actually outshines the sun in that range, so a should produce a nice big spike on any alien's spectrograph.

Elite: Dangerous 'billionaire' gamers are being 'antisocial', moan players

stucs201

Re: Thanks Jediben

Ah, that helps. I must admit I've not investigated what is and isn't possible in detail. As long as they can't turn up with a fleet of Anacondas and buy an entire planet's stock of it's main export then things perhaps won't be so bad.

I have to say that the possibility of the in-game economy being affected by other people's actions in solo mode is one of the main things putting me off buying it - I don't want to have a rubbish time getting started because the starter trade routes are already milked dry.

I know Diablo 3 improved massively once they killed the auction house and made getting loot for yourself realistic. Trying to keep up with inflated auction prices driven by people with more time to play than me was no fun at all.

That lack of time to play is why I worry about the influence of other players on the solo game. I don't want to feel like I'm standing still or even going backwards just because I have other stuff I need to do. Which is unfortunate, because as a teenager playing Elite for the first time (PC, CGA version) I always thought that an online version with enough players could be the best game ever. In a way I still do, it's just I don't have time for it anymore and would therefore prefer something that pauses when I have to deal with the real world instead.

stucs201

Re: Just like real life then?

Fineable stuff would be relatively easy to deal with - fines as a percentage of wealth is easier to implement in a game than real life.

I'd be more concerned about non-finable stuff. For example is there anything to stop a disproportionatly wealthy player single-handedly unbalencing trade routes? Not the sort of nonsense I'd want screwing me over if I was playing the suposedly single-player solo mode.
