usb live ...

...couldn't you have this begin a usb live linux, on the next start. All user interfaces are locked out, while the screen reads: "Update in progress" with a X minute countdown timer; and it would have relatively free reign within the machine.

GNOME 3: Shocking changes for Linux lovers

Thought the same...

I thought the same...until I tried one of the live iso's from the gnome3 site. I find that the desktop seems to get out of the way. I find it much easier to work changes in gnome3 using the keyboard, meaning controlling the apps and workspaces with out strange key combinations [these can be personalized], or needing mouse/touchpad input.

It is also lighter by half on resources, compared to my current system.

...I don't plan to update FF4 until it is in my Linux distro's repository (app store). So will Gavin acknowledge that count to be added to FF4, too? (Using chromium usually, anyway.)

Bad argument

Microsoft equals Windows creator. Google is not the creator of Linux, but user/abuser of it.

There are free, open source apps made available for flavors of Windows, too, are they shizzle?

How does MS treat devs? How many devs have written apps for Windows that suddenly have a MS developed "duplicate" added straight into the operating system which hurt/killed their business? Browser, games, AV, media player, etc.?

Qt development will stop?

Since Qt is the underpinning (as I understand it) for one of the two major desktop versions in Linux, KDE, could killing this development be one of the intentional effects of this barter deal that Microsoft has made with Nokia?

And to think I had just tried the new LinuxMint KDE rc this morning, too!

dalvik virtual app transport?

Since WebOS and Android are related, maybe using the dalvik vm will offer an instant "app store."

...The Linux updates do not have the same hoopla made of them because none are not held back for a scheduled release, but made immediately available. This continues to assure a more secure OS. It is a great trade-off.

FAIL

context is everything...

If the Oregon Tea Party is full of "God-fearing" conservatives, it is VERY surprising they use the 'we are Legion' phrase...as is noted in another post, the Bible context is about a large collection of demons.... hmmm.

The Reg guide to Linux, part 1: Picking a distro

Another Title

Mint user here( 2 yrs) although was very happy for about a year each with elive and PCLinuxOS. All three have bottom dwelling "task bars" to make it easier switching (it seems to me) from Windows. All three provide all the codecs needed for media play. All three have their own unique additions/tweaks from their "parent" distro. All three have vibrant, helpful communities.

I currently prefer Mint for its look, safety in numbers, and its unique useful tools (like backup, software manager ) and its richer re-working of the ubuntu base.

F*ck you, thunders disgruntled fanboi Apple user

The Apple fanboi says,

"I can't jump, 'cuz there isn't an app for that."

Which helped the Linux penguin to become brave enough to retort, "and I can't fly without more support."

As the two turned toward the Windows luser, they saw he had already jumped at the idea of "open" Windows.
