Apple: iPhone App and iTunes stores don't make money

re: Wow....

Well, there have been rumours that there might be more than one type of hardware.

However, there are also rumours - which I think make sense - that there will be a new iWorks (with multi-touch capability) and new iPhone OS unveiled.

Seriously though, there has been quite a bit of analysis in the past, which has been quite convincing, that the real way the ITS makes money is indirectly (i.e. the way that’s been suggested here). It would have been nice is some examples were cited – after all, the article does say this has been previously “suspected” and contains links about the app approval process (thinking about it, these aren’t overly relevant to the story)

Also what is “running those [App Store and the iTunes Store] a bit over break-even” exactly. Oppenheimer and I may share very different opinions about what ‘a bit even’ – not that my opinion matters… Personally, I’m a little sceptical – partly because I don’t trust businessmen and partly because I’m suspicious that Apple takes such a nice slice of iTunes revenue and still barely makes its money back.

I appreciate the ‘fanbois’ comment was meant to get the blood boiling of err… fanboys, who would hopefully comment, but not everyone who uses the iTunes Stores would be using a Mac. Similarly, there’s been an awful lot of coverage about very significant amount of iPhones have been jailbroken. There're an awful lot of users that haven't been hooked.

'They'?

Oh please.... you would do better in making your point if you didn't lump all Mac users together and resort to cheap abuse whilst doing it.

Personally, although I do use a fair bit of Apple kit (as well as kit and OS by other companies) and enjoy doing so, I've never had illusions that Apple is a company... and as a company, the only interest it has in me, is how much it can extract from my wallet.

As for Jobs making people cry, you really don't know much about what a bastard the guy can be. Look up the story of how he shafted Woz out of money for his 'help' in designing the electronic side of Breakout.... best of all, Woz only found out when he read a book about Apple years later and started crying. An Apple suit - and this is the bit I really like - put a comforting hand on his shoulder and said "Woz, we're all so sorry.... we all thought you knew." Makes someone who throws chairs a rank amateur!

As much as a bastard Jobs is/was, the comment about how Jobs refused treatment is a low blow. Sure there are stories, but there's been no evidence to support them - and there seems to be a tendency in spreading such tittle-tattle to attack Jobs... rather like the ones about Gates being autistic. If you want to criticise people like Ellison, Jobs et al, there's so much live ammo one can fire, so why pick something like that?

Survey shows strong demand for Apple tablet

Euchrid

Well..

You do realise that the iPhone OS is a version of OS X specifically designed for iPhones?

There are a number of rumours that iPhone OS 4.0 has coding specifically to do with the tablet, in which case (if true) there's probably going to be a kind of scaling up.

Until the device (or devices) are released I'm hedging my bets, but am inclined to agree with you that it doesn't need the full OS X.

Euchrid

Fair point!

On the other hand, quite a few people have been commenting on El Reg stories about the tablet, saying why it doesn't interest them (and ipso facto it won't interest anyone else for the same reasons) - personally, I think it's too early to make such judgements, but do find it interesting to read about the mindset of such posters.

Similarly, most surveys tell us more about who responded rather than what they were responding to. If a company wanted to find out how rumours about an unconfirmed product might impact demand on current products, for instance, then this kind of survey could be handy.

Have legal alternatives not help counter illegal downloads?

"And while sales from burgeoning markets like Apple's iTunes and Spotify are promising, they have thus far failed to counter damage from illegal downloads."

Is there any evidence to support this?

It's been claimed that (on El Reg and other sites) that services like Spotify P2P do attract people away from illegal filesharing. Indeed, I thought this was a major reason why record companies have invested in Spotify - so are they wasting their money?

One reason I believe there has been so much illegal filesharing is because the music industry was so slow to offer legal alternatives. Because of this lack, people are used to downloading illegally and it’s going to take time to change this mindset.

Also, isn't it hard to ascertain - like any black market activity - exactly what the level of illegal filesharing is? As such, it’s hard to judge the precise effect of legal alternatives?

No one?

If you look at the other stories about the tablet and about the ad-supported OS, you'll see that quite a few people have commented on it.
