Nasty firmware update butchers Samsung smart TVs so bad, they have to be repaired

Terminator

Unfortunately IoT tat will start to breed and multiply like wascally wabbits, and take over world+dog+outhouse space, all in the name of convenience.

This is Skynet's new master plan.

Once all IoT tat have taken over a lot of space, they all will be bricked, throwing everybody who's relying on IoT tat into confusion, panic and chaos.

Then the Terminators will come.

smart stuff and IoT are good bedfellows, and make for much merriment and goodwill amongst humans.

Bombastic boss gave insane instructions to sensible sysadmin, with client on speakerphone

Anonymous South African Coward Silver badge

First boss was fond of saying "just do XYZ at a client, it'll be quick".

It was not, and he was not happy with the overtime I put in. He did not realized that Mr Murphy played a merry game with XYZ at that particular client as well.

There's no such thing as a quick job. Forget it.

IT worker used access privs to steal £1m from Scottish city council

Anonymous South African Coward Silver badge

So he have lost his house, pension, and work.

And the prospects of employment is looking very, very poor.

What will his options be?

1. Suicide

2. Steal money, gamble and hope to strike the jackpot

3. Go around as a homeless beggar

In this case crime does not pay, but others will ignore the lesson and try their luck, thinking that maybe, just maybe, they will not get caught.

and expect an On-Call post detailing woes and tribulations with this kind of b0rked WD NAS chock and block full of critical and sensitive information that absolutely must be recovered - on a RAID0 volume.

Nah, I'll rather spend some $$$ and get a proper NAS with iSCSI support.

El Reg gets schooled on why SSDs will NOT kill off the trusty hard drive

SSD's will take HDD's over when the fabbing process improves on yield and speed.

For now spinning rust trumps SSD's when it comes to the space:cost ratio.
