New iPad: The only review roundup you'll ever need

It is just another iPad.

Which is why I want it.

A pint, because I also want one of those.

iPhone/PS3 hacker Hotz arrested in pot bust

Confuciousmobil

Young Mr. Hotz is probably the most intelligent person I have ever had the pleasure of talking too, and I speak too many very intelligent people. I learned a lot by being a sounding board for him (I'm sure he learned nothing from me, just wanted someone to bounce ideas off).

He probably didn't even think about the dope in the glove compartment, silly? Yes. A felony? Seems a bit harsh to me, but that's the good ol US of A for you.

He did, of course, make the conference and the audio (unfortunately no video ) of his talk is available.

Apple iPad sales slip as cheap Android tablet tsunami looms

Confuciousmobil
Megaphone

The reason Apple will continue to dominate is their business model. No matter how good Android is, most Android tablets need to make all the profit on the sale of the device, the most obvious exception is the Kindle Fire where Amazon have an ongoing revenue stream. Samsung et al, do not.

Windows 8 could change that, if M$ get it right, but Android? Where's the money?

Apple vs Amazon in ereader format smackdown

eBook reader - why?

Never saw the point of eBook readers. I read one book at a time and very rarely read books more than once and tend to do a lot of my reading in the bath (probably not a good idea with an eBook)

But I do have an iPad, so downloaded some books and, while on holiday last year, read my first Dickens (Great Expectations - very good) while sitting by the pool in the sun.

I still tend to get most of my books from the library, I don't own many books at all, I used to have a large collection but never read them more than once and when I moved to a smaller house I gave them all away.

YMMV but if I want to keep a book I want a printed version and if I just want to read a book once, a dedicated device seems OTT. But I do like having books on my iPad.

But, whatever you read - enjoy!

1M users can't be wrong

Since the release on Friday as of last night 950k people had used the new JB.

I'm sure it will be well over 1 Million by this morning.

That is in addition to the millions that were already JB on earlier devices.

Got a non-iPad tablet? Weirdo

Confuciousmobil
Happy

I'm no wierdo

Bought my first iPhone 3 years ago, kept it nearly 2 years (far, far longer than any other phone ove owned) and upgraded to the iP4. Love it.

Bought an iPad cheap just before the 2 came out and love it too. I now use my iPhone a lot less, given the choice I would have the iPad, but I am lucky, I have both.

I could go Android but I prefer a device that just works, I've spent to many years having to fiddle with devices just to get them to do the basics.

I do a bit of jailbreaking - originally to unlock my phone but now just because I like the aditional tweaks it enables (which, I'm sure, android owners will say it should do OOB -provided you configure it right). I love the appswhich are cheep or free from the app store and just work. Well.

When the iPhone first came out I couldn't see anything it did that my WinMo phone couldn't do, on paper the spec wasn't as good. How wrong I was. Just like people who judge devices purely by their paper spec are now.

Before my iPhone I was anti Apple, now I have an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

I don't intend changing soon and wil see whats available when I do, but at the moment I can't see anything that will tempt me away.

The iPhone is expensive, lots of people will settle for a cheaper android phone but the iPad is better than any other tablet, anything that comes even remotly close is the same price. Until someone else can have an ongoing revenue stream as Apple does with the App store I don't see that changing any time soon.

YMMV

Official: Samsung spurns WebOS

Confuciousmobil

Ownership

One thing Apple have that no one else (except, to an extent, Google) is ownership of the revenue stream.

For example, Apple can sell the iPad at a price where they can't be undercut by the competition as they don't make 'much' money on each device. But they do have a continuous revenue stream thereafter from the App store.

If you licence an OS or make your OS open so anyone can sell apps for it then you have no additional revenue source and need to make all your money on the hardware.

People might not like Apple's control freakery but as a business model it works very well.

That is what Samsung is trying to emulate with Bada - wether they succeed or not remains to be seen, but it's all about the downstream revenue. Licensing someone else's OS doesn't cut it as you don't get the revenue.

I, and most people I know, don't use Google +

Sony sues PlayStation 3 'hackers'

Geohot not a member of FailOverflow

George might not be a member of FailOverflow but he worked with them (or most of them) before he was kicked out of the original iPhone Dev Team for doing just what he did with the PS3, doing his own thing and releasing early without thought of the consequences.

It never ceased to amaze me just how few people have the skill to actually do hacking at this level.

They are very, very clever people and I hope that this case fails, but I hope more that none of these guys actually gets a job with a console/phone maker - then we would have fail proof security!

PlayStation 3 code signing cracked

They do it again...

It never ceases to amaize me how few people can actually do this level of hacking. Bushing and Marcan, two of Fail0ver, were original members of the iPhone Dev Team, as was GeoHot who's exploit resulted in OtherOS being removed in the first place.

Comex, another well known Wii hacker is now helping with the iPhone.

The same people work on all devices to free them so people can use their own software - pirating is not, nor ever has been, the aim, of these very, very clever people.

The more I learn of their methods the more humbled and grateful I am.

iOS jailbreak howdunnit partially solved

Confuciousmobil

I hope not!

Rubbish!

If Apple don't patch this security hole they are asking for trouble. I expect it to be patched VERY soon.

Just because it is legal to JB does not mean Apple must leave security holes.

At the moment the only way to protect yourself is to JB and install PDF Loading Warner from cydia. All non-JB phones are at risk of a malicious payload.

JB now, make sure you have your blobs on file, install PDF Loading Warner and if necessary unlock your phone with UltraSn0w (now available for all 3G/3GS and iPhone 4s)

iPhone 4 jailbreak banks on browser exploit

Comex - not Dev Team

The JailBreak was developed by Comex with help from the Dev Team, posixninja and others. It was not developed by the Dev Team.

It is the beta of iOS4.1 it doesn't work with but the FaceTime and MMS issues have been fixed.

It Jailbreaks all devices on iOS4.01 (I believe the problems with the iPad on 3.21 have also been fixed) but iPhones need to be activated first.

The unlock - which has been developed by the Dev Team will be released provided testing goes well over the next 48 hours.

iPhone: The OS with big aspirations

Confuciousmobil

Do the majority of people care?

Not sure why people get so worked up about this.

There are plenty of alternatives for those that want them - including Jailbreaking. Sometimes I wish Apple would spend more time stooping pirating and less time trying to stop Jailbreaking, but we can't have everything.

Most people that own an iPhone don't care that it is a closed system, those that do either JB or buy something else.

I own mainly Windows computers and used to own Windows phones - but I love my iPhone.

You might prefer other devices / OSes but that's your choice. Lot's of people just want something that 'just works' and really couldn't care less if it's locked down or not.

If we all thought the same it would be a sad world indeed.

Contest offers $100,000 for smartphone, browser hacks

Confuciousmobil
FAIL

iPhone

I'm not quite sure what the point of this is?

Are they after a replacement for the 24kPwn exploit or something else?

An offer of $10K prompted Geohot to unlock BB 05.11.07 but he turned down the money when he found out who it was from. Maybe he'll be tempted by this. The Dev Team don't work for money so I doubt if this will interest them, but if other hackers get an interest in the iPhone it might be good.

I am concerned that any exploit made public will be blocked by Apple - this competition is run by a security company.

In the case of browsers there is no advantage to having exploits. In the case of smartphones, to block these exploits will be very, very bad news for millions of JailBreakers.

I hope that if someone does find a 24kPwn replacement it is used for the good of the community rather than some small financial gain.

Oh Dear...

Jody Sanders offered George Hotz $10,000 dollars to create an unlock for the latest firmware but he refused it because he thinks Jody Sanders (who owns this site) is 'scum'

See http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2009/11/information-campaign.html for details.

Jody used to sell the Dev Team's software but insists that what he is selling is 'support' (which you can, of course, get for free from the Dev Team's Blog) but is now, I believe, selling Geohotz' software despite his copyright.

Unlocking software is freely available for the iPhone and the only time you should pay for an unlock is if it's from your phone provider (O2 charge nearly £15 for PAYG phones but it's free for contract iPhones)
