Really?

I don't think it needs to be spelt out that MS is feeling pressure from Apple as well as other service providers. MS has weak leadership (IMO), a confusing product line, and offers functionality that merely equals much of what is available elsewhere.
As for your comments about what should be sold as baseline? They make you sound like an 12 year old.
Ubuntu useless for your purposes?
I don't want to try and tell you what your purposes are, you know better than me, but your user cases as described above suite Ubuntu perfectly.
On top of that you have less worry about those machines being added to the latest botnet as virus definitions go out of date due to those dial-up users never updating their software.
Doesn't sound like that's the case? "Pella did pilot projects with the Windows 7 beta in February 2009, and started its full rollout in November 2009 when Windows 7 was released. By June 2010 the company had migrated 1,200 computers"
Pilot projects from Feb 2009, rollout between Nov 2009 & June 2010 to 1,200 machines.
The examples from Pella show they have migrated 1200 PCs in just over 6 months - that averages about 10 PCs per working day. That's not much progress in my mind - I know it isn't as straight-forward as a new install, but I also can't imagine they have just one person doing the work?
1 person = 10 a day
3 people = 3-4 a day
5 people = 2 a day
Are my maths screwy, do I just have too high expectations or is that just not very impressive?
That's a nice idea, though rather than inflict the option on everyone, have it as an option if IE6 is installed alongside IE8.
The option of being able to have both on one system would have helped me a year or so ago, but as it was i just stopped writing for IE6 completely.
Problem solved.
Although I don't want patent squatters to benefit from anything, anywhere, I would like to see technology move around more. If the cost of entry on patents is too high for smaller players then I think we'll see innovations stifled.
I guess we'll just have to see what patents were exchanged and what is done with them in the long term.
If you're worried about the fact it's going to be replaced, surely you would wait? Not buy an inferior model and carry a separate MiFi device around with you. Additionally, if you couldn't wait, you'd just swap out the SIM to your new device and sell your old iPad on eBay.
Besides, not everyone cares about having the latest tech, especially if what is on the market does what you need it to do.
But hey, whatever floats your boat.
I should think Netbook sales will be hit from first gen Atom owners looking to upgrade to a newer model - only to find the offerings currently available aren't that different to their current Netbook?
I choose to get an Envy 17 for mobile computing and plan to get a tablet of some description for lighter uses while sitting at the coffee shop :) hopefully that will cover most uses for me...
And I will be looking at the crop of 7 inchers for my Tablet - possibly even the new 7-8 inch iPad when it comes out :P
I should think/hope the point he is trying to make is that in this world having a destroyer specific for the task of air support is quite short sighted.
Who still has an Air Force that isn't on our side?
As for missile defense, if that is all it is going to be doing you'd want the most proven trusted system regardless of country of origin - buying American might have spared us enough cash to develop something else? Posssibly even something that we could export to the US and make some cash back...
On the other hand; Windows?
Thanks for the comment - hope you take more care with your critical Unix servers than you do reading peoples posts!
He didn't even mention Windows, nor going back to another OS after any amount of time, just that every time he installs a new version of Linux there is alot of configuration to get the machine how he likes it.
Sounds fair enough to me.
Or is it 'Here here' - whatever.
The sooner we all stop embracing proprietary formats on the Internet the better - much of the time proprietary does not mean better, and when these are adopted as standards we all suffer. Whether it be from shoddy plugins that only support the platforms they want to support, bad quality audio, bad quality visuals or simple greed in licensing, we all suffer as users...
From the article:
"In addition, daily Wii Fit use per household declined by 82 percent, from 22 minute per day during the first six weeks to four minutes per day during the second six weeks"
Helps if the participants actually *want* to get fit, you don't get fit by merely owning gym membership. Likewise you need to use the Wii Fit to see any benefits.
Idea for next article: Diet Coke with Burger & Fries not effective dieting...?
