Re: Or rings?
How short is short? This observation could be within any ring lifetime.
Other possibilities could be a recent body break up due to tidal forces blocking light asymmetrically, which could also be a reason for the orbital disturbance, i.e. some sort of close pass in a chaotic gravitational environment.

"wait in the wind and rain", this too can be improved upon. Today I walked for a mile over farm footpaths to catch a train two stops, for some sightseeing. The train part was the most comfortable. Often the getting there, the waiting, the what you do when you get there, the waiting again, and the getting back again after the transit portion are not to everyone's taste. However, I actually relish the challenge of the elements and prepare accordingly. I feel we have become too disassociated from our environment and cannot deal with 'out there' any more. Let me tell you there is nothing more invigorating than dealing with 'out there' and appreciating your comforts when you get home.

Seems to me we should establish a reason to go to the moon first. The moon is mineral rich but knowing what and where is not well known. A programme of strategic robotic sample return missions would seem to make more sense while at the same time the human presence is perfected. We don't need people to being rocks back, but we may well need people to manage a industrial mining operation.

It would seem to make sense that life is able capitalise on naturally occurring structures, and then propagate them once proven to have an evolutionary advantage.
The universe is full of enough variety and complexity to 'try anything at least once' so at the right time, when life comes a-knockin', the universe has already provided a home.

Re: View from Superman's home turf
In some places it could well be. I happened to be in Loch Lyon last week and wholly impressed by a fully functional (and clean) phone box. There are already many examples however of fully derelict ‘boxes having been taken over by nature. They are actually an art form in themselves.

Re: , programs were distributed on other media...
I remember fondly counting out numbers of parentheses in complicated formulas, you only needed to be one out and the logic didn’t work work, and the program would generate an error. Was a bugger going through the whole page working out which formula had the missing (or indeed extra) bracket!
