Poor ol' Bill
Too many people poo-poo (ahem) Bill Gates in his efforts to use his amassed wealth to help humanity, he doesn't have to; good on him I say!

I suggest you overuse 'literally'.
In the UK at least, much drinking water comes from the sky, and is collected in various reservoirs located in the more rainy areas of the country, the water itself ultimately originating in the Atlantic Ocean, which is huge to say the least. Yes biological waste will and does end up there (and has done over all of geological time) but I would wager that most of it repeatedly runs off back into the sea where it came from, unadulterated by faunal oesophagi!
The Alcosense Elite available in UK for £60 has a cleaning function where a small fan extracts moisture ready for the next use. They also do more budget models but without this function. Also it does not make judgements about your imminent demise, just whether you are over the limit, or not.
Everything's perishable if you leave it long enough!
How about Tefal heads instead?
Remaining shops:
Corner coffee shop & takeaway; Chinese takeaway (advertising justeat.co.uk); Chinese travel shop; grocery store specialising in Asian food; hairdressers; photography shop (that does visa and passport photos); pet supplies shop that sells windows (or a window shop that sells pet supplies); Chinese restaurant; estate agents; another takeaway; pub; newsagents; betting shop; kebab shop; another hairdressers.
And a giant Lidl on the other side of the road where you can't get:
- hot food
- a haircut
- a betting receipt
- your photo taken
- a paper
- drunk
I quite liked those 'light whips' in Johnny Mnemonic. Shame about everything else in the film, especially Keanu's soliloquy about room service and pressed shirts!
I found the article very negative about sat nav, maybe tongue in cheek at best. I've had various devices over the years, including factory fitted, but now find that Google Maps on my phone is just fine, very accurate, and gives accurate real time traffic information (I can only presume as crowd-sourced from connected devices). The only downside is having to set up a route where there is 3G, it uses GPS from then on; otherwise it's back to that old screen in the glove box or, shudder, actually knowing how to get to where you're going.
Global warming can't be true because people are getting bigger* and there's loads of those.
*except not in the UK
@Steve Jones
who says people believe LED's (or whatever) produce a blackbody spectrum, I'm sure they a) don't know what a blackbody spectrum is; b) don't care?
I remember switching to energy saving bulbs some years ago and the feel of my rooms being different from filament bulbs, somehow 'colder', but now I've got used to it and happy in the (presumed) energy saving costs, although I've not tried to isolate this from fluctuating electricity prices; I'm not sure many people check their actual consumption, only how much their bill is (which is the point of the article and the prize award).
You don't just rely on one source of information to make decisions, it's just a tool to give you an idea of the direction you're going, and possibly to help describe to you how you can reach your destination (if you want to get there).
Cross the flooded ford at your peril!
Re: keeping your brain alive
I think you are closer to the value of keeping your whole body alive. A very loose rule is body weight in kg × 25, e.g. 75 kg × 25 = 1875 calories, but the personal result depends on some additional factors such as height and age.
I'm sure I was taught in science classes in the 80's that room temperature is 21 ºC but Wikipedia seems to suggest it is 'defined' higher at 23 ºC.
I prefer to keep my house and office at 20 ºC, and car at 19 ºC, for a belief that it is (slightly more) healthy, but I wonder how many extra calories are burned per 1 ºC ambient temperature reduction per hour?
can FRO, they're just in it for the money. The progressive rock scene in the UK has been crowdfunding, self promoting and distributing for years. Smaller bands these days don't make money out of music sales anyway, it's the touring and merchandise, provided the venues themselves aren't asking too much of a cut of what they think they 'deserve' for kindly hosting your band and fans. Gits.
