Canon Powershot G11

Much cheaper in the USA? Not really, at least not this time.

Once you take British VAT into acount the kit is only about 24 quid cheaper across the pond. Though it is certainly the case that the AV manufacturers do take the piss when they can. If you compare the price of Sammy's 55 inch LED TV in Blighty and in the States (one has to compare specs to work out which models can be compared, they are very carefull to make it as difficult and confusing as poss.) one sees that the equivalent model is about 40% cheaper! However on this occasion it does not seem as if Canon is taking the piss by very much.

Logical analysis?

I am definitely not one of MS' fanboys and yes, my gut feeling is that whilst Win 7 is doing the company a certain amount of good (their reputation after the Vista-debacle if nothing else) it is not doing them as much good as they would like to believe or like us to believe. Nonetheless if it flatters MS too much to compare the second quarter of 2009 with the same period in 2008 (when the world economy was heading down the toilet at high speed) it is equally illogical to compare the current reported quarter with the final three months of 2007 just before the "Shysters of the Universe" on Wall Street succeeded in giving the world economy the second biggest b** f***ing in the history of modern capitalism. In fact the reaction of the markets to MS delivering fairly solid results in these uncertain times is reasonably logical. With regard to Win 7 specifically, the degree of uptake by businesses in the course of 2010 will be far more interesting and informative.

Being run over....

by some Jeremy Clarkson-wannabe because the idiot was driving too fast in the area concerned can certainly ruin your life - even end it, can't it? People who commit speeding offences increase very markedly the chances of the _killing_ someone. I do not think that one can compare downloading 24 songs with that. Unless of course the tracks concerned are so incredibly crappy that they represent a major public health hazard!

One gets the impression that the Vista-debacle (both the OS itself and the hardware upgrade demands it imposed) can have done MS more damage than has hitherto been understood. It is possible that only after period of some years of positive experience with Win 7 via the OEM market (and it is a good OS) will there be any "customer excitement" about a new Windows system. In other words MS are going to have to accept perhaps that Win 7 is their "community service sentence" for the expensive abortion that was Vista and that only with Win 8 (assuming that it actually does deliver a "game changer" in the OS-market) will they have a chance of seeing the kind of earnings that (in their time) Win 95, 2k and XP gave them.

OEM damage

I should also add that the "Vista-experience" did critical damage to the OEM-market for reasons which were not _entirely_ MS' fault. There were an awful lot of pc-producers selling pcs as "Vista-ready" when in reality they were not up to running that OS in any kind of satisfactory way. I remember them selling Vista Home Premium preloaded on machines with screencards which couldn't cope with Aero and with 1Gb RAM installed ! Given that anything more than Vista Basic could only just be persuaded to get out of bed with that amount of RAM let alone do anything useful it is hardly surprising that there were _many_ disapointed customers (both private and business) in that most crucial of all markets.

I am not about to accuse HP of any form of "conspiracy" against our "low contrast" brothers and sisters but one has to ask how a product development department in one of the biggest tech companies on the face of the planet managed to miss the fact that, under average lighting conditions, their technology does not work properly with the large majority of our fellow earthlings - hmmm? We do not need to start to scream about racism, we just need to point out that our dear brothers and sisters at HP are a touch (what shall we say?) provincial.

Yo, and all that kind of thing.

Analysts?

"The good news is that the company remains profitable. The bad news is that those profits have sunk 54 per cent since last year - and were 5 cents a share worse than analyst estimates."

How often have we seen this kind of thing? A company performs "worse" than the analysts predicted and its shareprice takes a caning. Doesn't anybody EVER ask whether or not the analysts know WTF they are doing? Could one not equally well argue (sometimes) that the analysts have effed up by OVERestimating what could be rationally expected in the given market condtions? I cannot be the only one who sometimes gets the feeling that these people are a bunch of overpaid tealeaf-readers.

Not a MS fan but...

Let us agree that Vista utterly failed to live up to expectations and suffered from elephantiasis, OK? Right, glad we got that over with. Now let us further discuss this idiotic comparing of XP (with SP1, 2 and 3 PLUS a shitload of patches etc.) with the straight from release version of Win 7.

XP BEFORE SP1 was an abortion, yes you heard me, an abortion. Many appear to have a very selective memory with regard to what XP was like when it first came out! I have XP Pro, Vista and a newly installed Win 7 running at home at I can honestly say that it is the first time ever that the "right out of the box feeling" with a NEW operating system was as it should be. In fact I installed it dual-boot on the same machine thats running XP and can make a very direct comparision. It is a FAR better OS straight from the box without service packs than XP is with three of the f-----kers! It just installed, talked to all my hardware without exception and is significantly faster than a clean install of XP (SP1,2 and 3) and MUCH less clunky (of course) than a clean install of Vista (SP1). Vista will soon be history (thank God) and I will be installing Win 7 on that machine as well. I'll keep XP as the secondary OS back of Win 7 on the portable just in case I get any programme compatibility issues. Other than that Win 7 is, so far, a pleasure to use. MS are still taking the piss with their prices though, big time. THAT I entirely agree with.
