Ballmer: Windows Mobile lost a 'whole generation'

MS has 'lost' data previously (mail) and gives Plod instructions have to circumvent security (see Cryptome).

Why should MS be entrusted with storage? Or possibly anyone - unless you employ multiple back-ups and TrueCrypt? Always remember the Patriot Act which permits the US Government to access any US-based computer without a warrant.

Inequality remains: the US Congress still too busy

If if USA had ratified their side of the Treaty - only done by Senate 29 days ago, seemingly the Congress (two houses like UK) has been too busy with some financial misdeeds on Wall Street and spent a year on fixing up healthcare - the fact remains the inequality of the provisions, weighted against UK citizens remain, and were symptomatic of the 'puppy dog' syndrome exhibited by Blair and highlighted by his adopting lies to justify the Iraq invasion that resulted in the many deaths of British youth.

My use of capitalization is for emphasis and not some other reason. Have a careful read of < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extradition >, < http://www.statewatch.org/news/2003/jul/25ukus.htm > for particulars of the inequalities.

Labour government cowards: is new one better?

The agreement under which British citizens can be extradited to the USA not only is ONE-SIDED, on favour of the Americans, naturally, but their part of the agreement has NEVER BEEN RATIFIED so only UK citizens are deported, under unequal TERMS whilst US citizens are essentially immune to deportation except for the most extreme crimes.

This new, wimpy, Britain, made so by Blair, et al should tell the new government ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Either the UK prosecutors should get off the pot and charge the man, if he didn't breach a British law and tell the Americans that until the agreement is ratified with provisions that nothing will be done in any matter.

Besides, if a government is so inept that it can't manage or secure it's computer systems the blame ;lies with them if someone happens inside their data.

Too ashamed to sue?

Obviously the deaths of this product presaged the defects in the Icrap series of telephones with batteries burning, cases melting culminating in their latest fiasco of bars and antennae that don't work. iCrap 4 still maintains the self-combustibility that is the heritage of the Apple communicators. Remember they had monitor problems, too?

Just how incompetent can Plod get?

Judges are usually busy brown nosing Plod and praising them to Hell and back, ignoring their 'exaggerations' so for one of them to say "I'm quite used to incompetence but this really takes the biscuit. ... this is a disgrace. Nothing surprises me now about the lapses and incompetence of prosecutions." REALLY highlights the problem.

Pity it wasn't in Canada or the USA where time limits apply to these situations.

Most likely Plod was too busy harassing photogs under Sections 43 and 44 whilst they took pictures of military installations called castles and owned by the National Trust.

Let's hope the new government gets a grip on them.

Can ANYONE be Trusted with our personal data?

Given the governmental abuse of data in many countries, within and without the EU, NO data should be permitted to cross any border without disclosure to and the specific permission of the data subject.

Even within the UK we have idle trolls who access our data our prurient curiosity entrusted to the government and this data, as well health records, end up in the public domain.

There is absolutely no need for all this data gathering in the first place and joining the databases together inly adds to the wrong doing.

Canada, for one, has a government policy of segmenting data, so that authorised users can only access what is pertinent to their job requirements. Data is spread between the national and provincial governments increasing the protection against illegal viewing. Mind you this can reach extremes where services cannot be obtained without data from both levels of government.

Clearly the U.S. government is the most prolific gatherer of mundane information with the UK not being a too distant second. I reside in an authoritarian country, complete with ID cards, bur individuals data is far less than that of other countries.

Unlike the cheap power blocks available all over, undoubtedly Apple blocks are different ... they catch fire or cause fire in the products to which they ate connected.

The cheaper blocks are super reliable and conform to all required international standards.

Maybe Apple will take a patent out on how to set screws - all their slots aligned in a single direction. Or how about a patent on the plug pins? Apple is a patent happy entity whose time would be better spent on figuring out why their products have such poor safety performance.

They can still harass snappers on tourist buses

Unfortunately the trustworthy Dixon of Dock Green perception of police was trashed when Blair and Brown decided they had a better idea of law and order.

It's my experience in rhe U.S.A., Canada and the U.K. that when it comes to justifying their actions most become liars that would make Pinocchio's nose look like a dimple. The whole bunch should be book authors.

I was visiting London when one of those Wanna-be -a-plod-characters (community something) approached me and said, in some form of English, I was breaking the law taking pictures. I responded, in Chinese, which was met with the response of 'bloody foreigner' as he wandered off. These encounters do nothing for tourism.

At least foot bound snappers are protected but the Plods still have those topless tourist buses to harass. Likely they will have insufficient guts to take on a bus load of people.

Many businesses deploy large data content as Torrent traffic so there will be quite a few false accusations as government panders to a failing business model employed by media companies.

These are frequently supplemented by (free) 1-800 numbers which means the Canadian public can minimise contact with the ever decreasing number of civil servants.

What the BBC Trust doesn't understand is that the BBC website represents Britain to the world. It's where many students worldwide find resources for their homework and language training.

BBC chief acknowledges DAB flop & internet radio

DAB was dead on arrival

There are hundreds of thousands of former Brits, dare I say millions, scattered all over the world who listen to the BBC via short-wave or the InterNet. The World Service only fills part of this listening requirement as these wandering souls, of which I am one, want to hear the 'home' services of the BBC, just as they did in their years in the UK.

The proof of the popularity of the BBC is the fact that National Broadcasting radio and television services have such high audience counts for the BBC originated programming. Notwithstanding the BBC has it's fare share of 'junk' the news, drama, factual documentaries set the benchmark for such programs.

As I sit on my small patio overlooking a lake in Indochina, or deep in the interior of Laos I can enjoy some sanity over the digital InterNet not the digital DAB. The iPlayer is not appreciated as it represents unneeded computer overhead. We can still view BBC video as if we were sitting in the UK, thanks to private proxies, as well as record programming for later viewing.

If the BBC spent it's budget more judiciously to HELP listeners access programming instead of wasting it creating technical challenges that simply provide work for the gifted to circumvent.

IMHO opinion, the current Director General is as out of touch as many of his predecessors were, along with the BBC Trust.

Giving Jobs something to do other than smart arse remarks

Jobs obviously needs something to do other than to utter flatitudes (aka verbal diarrhoea) about software fixes (which still don't fix the REAL problem), how to hold iCrap phones, etc.

Given his apparent mental challenges to anyone challenging The Jobs Commandments with respect to verboten software and applications will likely give him real to challenge him.

Obviously he isn't THAT smart. Apple computers were crippled shortly after the initial D-I-Y friendly models which affected their ratio to PC's; now he is repeating the effort to eventually lose the war against Android software. Tunnel visioned AND short-sighted.

How dumb does US Airways think passengers are?

Given how paranoid the thieving employees of TSA are it is practically impossible that it "was caused by a passenger who brought a container of spoiled meat onto the plane" as TSA would have found it first.

Likely it was airline food, a recent report from the U.S. FDA that has condemned many airline 'kitchens' reporting all manner of extreme violations of hygiene rules, rodents, etc.

In saying it was a passenger, US Airways demonstrates just how delusioned it is as overhead lockers are checked after each flight for stuff left behind by PAX.

Besides the smell would have alerted any decent airline. US Air was the carrier that allowed a Vietnamese pot bellied pig to travel in the cabin when the owner/passenger said it was like a dog to her!

Ichecked them just before writing this.

Given today's snatch your phone and run social environment, Jobs proposition that hand phones be treated as some British hold a cup of afternoon tea is TOTALLY impracticable. And risky.

The answer for fools who bought Jobs latest iCrap is for Apple software writers to change the software so that increasing signals are IMMEDIATELY displayed but decreasing signal levels are only displayed after 5 or 10 seconds so no users know what is going on.

This is why they are called IDIOT LIGHTS.

This clears it as being a iCrap knock-off as Apple CAN'T DO 3D!!!

JaitcH
Alert

Knowledge of a product isn't copying

There are surprisingly few identical characteristics between the Chinese tablets and Apple other than the concept which is like saying a Toyota is a knock-off of a Rolls ioyce because they both have wheels, and engine and a people compartment..

Jobs might have announced his latest box in January BUT the Chinese had product on the shelves.. Living next door to China I am well aware of their respect of IP rights so your proposition that these other products is without foundation.

I guess you are therefore implying Google knocked off Apples IpHONE? What of of RIM and Apple or Palm and Apple - following your logic Apple knocked off that product. Likewise with their computer and IBM.

That said I would concede the point that the Chinese copied the IpOD - and some are very good, in fact I have a stainless steel cased copy, as do others in my family and the quality is first class.

The bottom line is the Chinese products have superior software, very adequate displays, superlative features and a licenced OS. If you were to get the Application Notes for the RockChip 2808 you would understand the fallacy of your statement: "leeching off the R&D work of others".

The Chinese are technically very competent and without them Apple and many other US companies would have no products to sell.

JaitcH
Alert

Hardly 'stolen' or 'knocked off'

How can anyone steal or knock off a design months ahead of Apples iCrap? The OS is different, the PCB is different, the functionality is different. In reality Apple copied these products that have been around since 2010 JAN.

Last week I received 2 tablets from Zenzhen and they were different to each other. Both had Chinese characters in their names (one also had RK2808 in the name).

I spent the weekend in Zenzhen and picked up 5 more tablets, all different in design and feature although there is commonality in components and some of the software. None had Android v2+ and therefore I would recommend those people not in SE Asia buy from a supplier within your country so you can get warranty service but ONLY after they load V2+.

Chinese products can be crappy from a reliability perspective. For myself it is simply crossing the border. That said the units I bought had mature PCB designs with zero mods, added components or jumpers. Software can be loaded through mini-USB connectors and external screens can be run from some tablets.

Even though Apple hit the market months after these units, it failed to add the many neat features these early bloomers had working 5 months early than Jobs did. You can actually use some of these tablets as a game controller playing on an external monitor. The Apple tablet is a missed opportunity - unless you want to sell annual 'upgrades' as has happened with the crippled IpHONE.

Manuals tend to be written in Chinglish, with poor illustrations. Three units have soft manuals loaded and further copies on the InterNet. Even schematics are shown. However, the unit operations are intuitive and my son has figured out the operation in under an hour.

Jobs should be apoplectic with aPad and RK2808

Jobs, of Apple, purportedly has a short fuse (temper) and the availability of these competitive devices should make him sit up and think about the crippled iCrap products.

A colleague, recently back from China, returned with one each of aPad and RK2808. We opened them up and there was one added component and one added jumper wire which demonstrates a mature product. The motherboard was fibre rather than an economy material.

I have a custom e-interface on my motorcycle, run on a under-the -seat Notebook computer and I have managed to transfer some of the functions on to the RK2808 tablet which offers a far superior display to my home grown LED display.

Since the screen might be hit by the deluges of rain we have in VietNam, the only question is whether the touch screen is too sensitive or not. Splash-proofing the device will be easy with the use of a custom stainless steel and a tube of silicon glue.
